Was reading something about Senator Norris recently and was just wondering about people'sopinions on him running for President.

Simple enough question. Would you/ will you vote for David Norris to be President?

I certainly would. He seems like a genuinely good man with great intellect and he's one of the few politicians I feel is not in politics for his own gain.

I like him and would vote for him... providing there wasn't another person running who I thought was better. :)

Considering Bertie Ahern and Jackie Really - Hay have expressed interest in the Park, I'd definitely vote for Norris.

David Norris would make an excellent president, but I'd imagine that someonle like Michael D Higgins would appeal to a wider demographic.
    He would get my vote.

After 800 years of living with a monarchy I for one do not want to be ruled by another queen.

    Depends who's running

I don't really see the point of voting him into such a useless role, pity he didn't run for the Dail.

Will be voting for Michael D Higgins if he's running, but if not, yeah Norris would get my vote

David Norris overdoes the Gay bit. Some of those people make it sound as if the straight people are out of order. I have nothing against Gays but do many of them have to flaunt it ?
I have a nephew who is gay and you wouldn't know to look at him or speak to him but many of them go about daily on an advertising mission i feel.

    Voting for Michael D instead

    LOL:)

I dont think there is a person in the country that doesnt know Norris is gay but just in case he has put a page on his site http://www.davidnorris4president.com/how.html

I`d vote for him. He would probably be more visible than Mary McAleese. I really wonder how she spends her time. Does the Aras need constant hoovering or what!

Whats the point of having a president in this country? Its pretty much void. You could have any gobshite as president and nothing would change other than appearance. Pointless job is ****ing pointless.

Just ask yourself does a man that lives in a full recreation of a Georgian Period house who referred to the founders of our state as terrorists represent the Irish people?

I wont be voting for him but I would vote for Chuck Norris!

Its pretty obvious that he didn't write that himself, his opposition did.

The fact that Norris is gay is taking over the debate about his candidacy. If say you won't vote for him, everyone assumes its because you have problem with the fact that he's gay.

Should we not be discussing whether he would fulfil the role of the President. Norris is a good senator, and has worked very hard there, but that doesn't necessarily mean he will be a good President. The Presidency is a non-executive role, so he/she would have very little scope to dictate any policy or side on any issue. I think Norris would politicise the Aras, which would be a bad thing. Norris also (in his own words) considers himself anglican, is that who should be leading the republic. especially since 2016 is just around the corner.

Norris is probably a better option that Michael D... who would spend his term reading poetry at every opportunity.

fwiw I would vote for Brian Crowley. I think he would be great for the office.

That stuff about the 1916 rebels being terrorists is just a rumour. See what Norris actually believes here:
    Dear <my name>,

Thank you for contacting me and raising your concerns about the rumours that have been circulated about me calling the heros of 1916 terrorists. I never made any such comment and in fact had a major Sunday newspaper print a retraction stating so.

I have great admiration for the men and women of 1916 and it would be my great honour to stand at the GPO and honour their bravery. I do hope this answers your concerns.

    With best wishes
    David Norris

I would vote for him but I can't see him getting on the ticket*

As in I don't think the county councils or enough members of the oireachtas will give him their support to enable him to run.

No. But I wouldn't vote for anyone for president. What a completely pointless position.

In fairness, it seems to be his opponents that are making the big deal about it.

Yes I would vote for him

 There are many of them who go around wiggling their backsides and "advertising" the fact that they are gay. Some men you only have to look at to tell that they are gay. Others do not flaunt the fact that they are.

    And whats wrong with that?
Are they hurting you? Beating you up? Shouting at you?

I'm gay and I dont 'flaunt it' as you say, I'm pretty 'straight acting', but each to their own I find is the best thing....

    Certainly

If he was the only one running

When I was working in the Seanad Norris alway met tour groups with a smile and was more than happy to chat to them.

I met him at a function afterwards and I introduced myself saying I had worked in the Seanad and he greeted me like an old friend even though he had no clue who was! Talk abut the Céad Míle Fáilte!

I would love for Ireland to have such a charming and affable man as president, the fact he is gay(which show us to be a progressive state) is just topping on the cake!

Seeing him on the show that Wogan did, I would vote for him.
The presidents job is to represent Ireland to an international audience. He is the best man for the job.

    Would vote Norris.

But would vote Michael D. 1st in a heart beat. That's just 'cause im in my twenties though. The whole arts, sports, culture malark always get's me. He is what i love about this country.

Some backward auld lad like Healy-Rae would make me immigrate.

Seriously???? Do you not see women who are straight doing EXACTLY the same thing. And then practically shagging someone in the corner of a club? How is a gay man (or lesbian) out on the pull any different from someone who is straight?

I don't particularly want to see anyone shaking their arses, but I mean that indiscriminately, I don't care whose arse it is!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭Chuchoter

No, purely because I think he tries too be a character and he's said some really weird things about older men going out with teenagers. He'd be good in TV, I don't know about president. People shouldn't be voting for him purely because he's gay and they want to look progressive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 834 ✭✭✭The Agogo

    Hands-down he gets my vote!

It's a pointless position and he's a humorous man. What can you lose?

    Stop spreading this tabloid nonsense.
He never said this, in fact he successfully had the rag that printed it print a retraction.
    Edukte urslfplz.

I wouldnt vote for him because I dont live in the Republic.

If I did live in the Republic I probably would vote for him unless there were a better candidate on the ballot.

The only reason I'd vote in a presidential election is if somebody I truly despised was running. I don't truly despise Norris so won't be voting against him.

tbh though, I think he's far too outspoken to be president in Ireland, where the position means that you can speak out about hardly anything for fear of threatening the separation of powers. He'd be wasted in the role, imo.

I'll hae to wait to see who else runs but I wouldn't have a problem with voting for him and he seems like a pretty good candidate.
