I've never seen a 'good tattoo'. They just look dirty on a person's skin from the outset and get progressively inkier and more blurred as time passes. The 'tribal style' previously popular amongst backpackers about 10 years ago and skangers today looks like the doodles I used to make on my copies in school.
To describe tattoos of wizards, snakes, dragons, hearts, roses, yin-yangs, kanji, burlesque girls etc as art is an insult to every artist who ever lived. Anybody with any of the above (and other popular tattoos I can't think of) is intellectually challenged and emotionally stunted.

    Cool.....obviously. :)

I have five, working on a sleeve now.

Great site that won't do anything for those that are on the fence:

    http://ugliesttattoos.failblog.org/
Well there goes an hour of my life, and my persistent hankering for a tattoo has gone with it! :S

    Hilarious site though!

At this stage I've had my tat for longer than I haven't...and I still love it - if other people don't, well, who cares?!:D

Again, why do you say that?.

Because that's my opinion and this is a discussion board. This is a tattoo of a wizard holding a crystal ball:

    http://www.steve-a.co.uk/main/images/gareth1.jpg

The only person who would consider that art or a general cool image is a nerdy 13 year old boy. The only explanation for an adult putting it on his body is that he is intellectually or emotionally retarded.

I said I don't like tattoos ergo I have an Oedipus complex? I don't quite follow your logic.

    .

I quite like it and I am none of the things you described. Although a few of my female friends have alluded that I am emotionally retarded.

Yup, and I asked because I'd like to discuss your opinion with you and the other people in the discussion.

So again, why do you say those things - like, what has happened to make you form the opinion that people with tattoo's are "intellectually or emotionally retarded"?.

The fact that you think something must have happened to someone because they hold a different opinion than yours speaks volumes. What tattoos have you got? I presume at least one of the types I mentioned because you got so snarky.

    Here's the list again:
wizards, snakes, dragons, hearts, roses, yin-yangs, kanji, burlesque girls etc

And I'll say it again. Any adult who puts stuff like that on their body because they think it looks cool is lacking both intelligence and a sense of artistic appreciation.

So your basically saying that at least 40% of boardsies are "intellectually or emotionally retarded?

i agree that everyone is entitles to there opinion but at least have some reason why you think this

There are beautiful tattoos and sh1te tattoos.

A lot of people have them in places where they are usually covered by clothing. Others have them on their knuckles and hands, you know the type.

It's personal choice. You don't like em, don't get em.

BTW I was away in the Canaries this year and every English bloke had one or more tattoos. They just seem common then. I was the original one with none.

I'm quite disturbed by the unabashed prejudice some folk have about people who have tattoos.

The same people now would probably be shocked if someone accused them of being a racist or sexist but how different is that to dissin' people who have tatoos? To me that attitude just says that your kinda limited in your openess to all people.

I don't have a tattoo but have courted the idea up until recently. I've now figured out that I'm too changy-mindy for a tattoo.

I'm going to employ the 'going-on-holidays-for-a-week' test for these two 'groups'.

Who would I rather go on holidays for a week with? A bunch of tattoo haters or a bunch of people with tattoos....

LoL easy to figure out who'd be more interesting and fun.

    Check out these beauties.

    Drools

    Hawt

    More.

    Run away.. :pac:

Always have to laugh at pasty, fat Irishmen with their tribal tattoos.

And the skanky Irish women with their tramp stamps.

Artistic appreciation varies for each individual, no matter their age, so that can't possibly be true. And intelligence has nothing to do with having a tattoo or a certain type of tattoo; in fact, some tattoos I've seen, people only got after putting much thought and research into the subject - which is exactly what I've done for each of my tattoos.

Do you like tattoo's of "high-horses"?

Seriously, the quoted statement makes absolutely zero sense. Tattoo's are nothing to do with "thinking it looks cool", they are to do with personal meaning, which obviously differs from person to person.

Your view of what is artistic may be completely horrible to another person.

I have no tattoo's (yet;)) but it'll be of meaning when and if I get one.

I have no problem with anything mentioned on your "list" on a person as long as there is meaning behind it, that is what art is isn't it? Expression?

I personally don't care for them though I've seen the odd one that does look kind of nice. I do wonder though how good those tattoos will look on people though when they're 50 or 60.

To be fair no part of a person looks good when they are 50 or 60 so I doubt it matters much...

A question to those with tats.

Is it ok if a stranger in a pub walks up to you and asks to have a closer look?

I do it from time to time and a mate of mine says it's rude.

i don't think i would mind in general. good convo starter. what would bother me is if the person asked to have a look and then launched into a tirade about how stupid i was, how knackery they all look etc (like a proper tattoo hater came throwing their hate on me - fair enough your not into tattoos, thats your business, but don't go lashing out at me cos i am). but in general yea why not.

i remember posting about how i was going to a particular artist for a piece, then was out in a club and a chap approached me and said he had seen said post, and proceeded to show me a recent piece he had done by the same artist. that was cool

People always say that but it depends on where you get it done, how well you look after the tattoo and on skin type I think.

I look after my skin-I don't lie out in the sun, wear sunblock, and thank's to my genes I'm aging pretty well I reckon-my Mum was still fresh and young looking at 50/60 and didn't have saggy skin so I'm hoping I'll be the same and my tattoo and skin will be fine til I reach my 70/80's, and at that stage I won't give a damn anyway what others think about me!.

We all age and we'll all eventually have wrinkled and saggy skin (if we're lucky to reach old age!). If that time comes I'll count myself lucky if the only thing I'm worried about is a faded tattoo!
You can always get them re-done/covered up or lasered off anyway if they're that bad or just covered with clothing unless it's on the face/neck or hands, which I wouldn't personally want but each to his/her own.

Depends on the person. Helen Mirren? George Clooney? Sofia Loren? Raquel Welch? all hot, all older.

instead of wrinkly skin I'll have coloured wrinkly skin....not much of a difference

(I think she looks rotten btw.)

    Hilarious site though!

But the only thing that site should teach you is think it through and be very careful what kind of tattoo you get and who does it, not don't get one at all.

Much hilarity trawling through that site though. Felt bad for some who's tattoos weren't THAT bad being made fun of though there's no excuse for wrongly spelled tattoos. I've seen a lot worse than some of those on people around where I live TBH.
