I've seen some complete works of art on people designed especially for them.

I do find the the follow disgusting though stars, butterflys etc.

Generally I dislike knackery looking tattoos but if its well done I will give credence to it. I also hate those rosary bead around the ankle ones that people copied from Nicole Richie or who ever.

I personally think its wrong to copy someone elses tattoo...

Its all down to personal taste.

I have one on my foot and am saving to get a few done by various tattooists around the world who's work I like.

I have 5 tattoos and I think they all look cool, I seen a bloke with a spider tattoo on his face that was the worst one ive ever came across

Are the swallows on necks hipsterish?
Loads of my friends came back from travelling with that done years ago, and on their wrists.
I thought it was a bit strange, and didn't 'get' it.

Its just a fashion trend like stars were or still are. Tattooists should refuse to do them at this stage.

I have two and don't regret them, I'm not a fan of tramp stamps or names on the side of your neck. Don't see the point in that unless you get wasted on a daily basis and have to be told your name.

Swallows were originally for sailors who had crossed the equator or had sailed X amounts of miles, depending on who you ask.

If it's not the usual tacky tramp stamp / teardrop / star / barbed wire / etc then I usually think they're cool.

Cousin just got his arm tattooed of The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Looks incredible.

    .

Well my most recent one is butterflies and stars, but it was designed especially for me and I consider it a work of art!

Ah, so maybe that's why they got it done while travelling?

I asked one of them what was with the swallows, and got a half assed answer I didn't understand.

Also, whoever mentioned the stars - the same group of friends also have stars on their neck and wrists.

These type of tattoos are what I see as pointless and silly.

Compared to this girl I used to work with who had this absolutely amazing piece of art down her back.

All the guys were jealous that I got to see it actually (including my boyfriend!) - She was regarded as the hottest girl in the Dublin metal scene at the time!

That bully in the Panorama Winterbourne View care home TV report has probably hobbled the uptake of full upper arm tattoos..

    It is a bad association.

EDIT: RTE Radio 1 did a recent feature on the merchant tattoos, mentioned 10,000 miles for each Swallow.

    Art is subjective.

I'm sure the other 1,000,000 people with tattoos of butterflys and stars like theirs too...

No such thing as non-Celtic people, Celts have bred with just about every tribe in the world ;)

Then why are they so xenophobic?

    They're all Spanish anyway;)

You're right, it is subjective and no doubt others love their tattoos too. But none of them are the same as mine!

I usually don't consider them either cool or tacky.

I do tend to like large/multiple bold tattoos on people who are that way too -- larger than life, bold, rare characters; eccentrics; people who have lived a genuinely fascinating life. People who can point to one of many tattoos and tell you a seriously amazing story about that time in their life.

That'd be the only scenario in which I'd see a tattoo as cool, and I suppose it's more the person and their stories I'd be enjoying, rather than the art. I have to admit I'm not that impressed by hyper-realism in tattoos. I don't see why realism is a measure of 'good' art, but that's another issue.

That's just me anyway. I don't hate tattoos that are purely aesthetic, or even trend-driven. I just wouldn't find them "cool".

love some tattoos, laugh at others:D
got my tattoo done when i was 18 (17 years ago:eek:) and i still love it. luckily i went with someone who had done research and got a great tattooist and the tattoo looks as good today as it did then (just a smallish one on my shoulder).

I'd never get one. I don't think there's any one thing I'd want to put on my body for life. Cause of this I don't particularly like tattoos. I've loads of friends with tattoos and they look good and stuff but I can't help think what'll it look like when you're older. Trends and fads come and go.

Makes sense. I do love Asian food.

I don't have one but hope to in the next year or two. I have seen some that I think look a bit tacky but everyone has their own tastes. A lot of my friends have tattoos.

I think it depends on what the tattoo is, and where it is on the body. Some look deadly, some look like a toddler went bat sh*t with markers.

I don't think i could ever get something permanent marked on my body like that, I just know I would end up hating it at some point.

A question to those with tats.

Is it ok if a stranger in a pub walks up to you and asks to have a closer look?

I do it from time to time and a mate of mine says it's rude.
