I hate the notion that tattoos have to have some big deep meaning or reason, p*iss off onto Oprah with that cack. A 16 year old who has something so important happening to them in their life that they need to get it tattoted is as rare as hens teeth. All my mates who got tattooed at 16 had proper teenager stuff like skulls and demons done. I don't approve of this modern sappy emo carry on.

I have two tattoos, I could spin great stories about what they mean to me but ultimately they're there because I like the look of em

I love them as long as they have a meaning or the person has a good reason for getting one, not just an enormous tribe tat 'because it looks cool'. I've a good size one on my ribs/side that I got when I was 16, it has loads of sentimental meaning for me and I’ve never regretted it once.

See, I don't really see the need for them to have "meaning". Some people just love body art. My husband is getting an amazing one on his back at the moment, completely and utterly amazing, there is no "meaning" in it. He has just wanted this idea done for years and finally found someone who is capable of doing it.

I just absolutely adore (good) tattoos and think that them "looking cool" is a good enough reason to get one!

Some ridiculous stereotypes in this thread. Like all art it can be good or bad, depending on how it's done.

No tattoo's myself, can't think of anything I'd want permanently on my skin, but I can appreciate a good tattoo.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I think its bull**** that people think you need a reason to get a tattoo. "oh this giant crucifix signifies the time when i ran out of bogroll while taking a **** and my pet turtle died" etc etc.
If anything nowadays you're more unconventional if you dont have a tattoo. I also cant stand this new trend for guys getting neck tattoos. I see it all the time now, walking through town some little scummer in his tracksuit and matching neck tattoo.
Not that i have a problem with tats, i have 2 i got done almost 10 years ago and my fiancee is covered in them :D I just think its silly to think its somehow original or counter culture to get a tattoo....****ing everyone has one nowadays.

I have 2 tattoos, designed by myself, and each with very special meaning to me. One on the inside of my arm, and one on the front of my foot. I know I will get at least one more. I never gave a second thought to what anyone would think, it's my body. I can easily cover them up if I want to. As for people classing those with tattoos as a knacker, thats just insulting, and extremely shallow:mad:

    My opinion:
People with loads of tattoos are cool. Complete sleeves, or just loads of visible tats. Sort of people that some people may cross the street when they see them.

Although, too high up the neck or anything on the face is bad. Tramp stamps are just tacky. Cartoon characters or any "fad" tats are bad. You know the ones where you can probably guess the year because everyone was getting them then.

    Tacky! 100% tacky.

Just wait until everything goes south and your skin gets wrinkly, that tattoo will get a whole new lease of life :pac:

Who cares ? i dont! We all get old and our looks deterioate as we age no matter who we are! And yes a tatoo may not look as good as it did when if was new but who cares at that stage ! I have one and its not for fashion or to make me look good! Dont be so shallow when im old i want to be happy and healthy i wont care about looks!!!

    Tacky.

Once in London I happened to see a girl in full Punk regalia sporting a tattoo which read 'No Future' in roughly inch high letters across her forehead.

Cool. I have one and plan on a few more. Shoulders & back methinks.

However - Note to Dublin males of a certain age & socioeconomic background: Getting the name of the daughter you've probably seen three times in her life tattooed on your neck doesn't make you a good/responsible dad.

Dont like them at all. Maori tattoos on Maori people look pretty cool when its down their arms and stuff but in general i think they look trashy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

I'd never say they were trashy in the sense of looking down on someone, but I can honestly say that I've never looked at a tattoo and thought it was nice. I just don't think human skin is a particularly good place to put a picture.

And just for myself, the idea of permanently marking myelf like that is horrible. I'm also one of the people who feels a tatto is less awful if it signifies something. I know some people just like them or think they're cool, but for me I think it makes sense that a permanent mark on your body should be for something important.

I've three, love them all and well worth the discomfort. Each has particular personal relevance to me, but my next one might not.

IMO as with everything in life, some are tacky and OTT but some are true works of art.

I've got one I designed myself and got some years back, a stylized celtic sea horse on my ankle. I still love it.
Sounds lovely, I was thinking of a sea horse, had a good chat with the guy last time I was in.

i think sometimes depending on the person , placement of the tattoos, how good the art work is is pretty cool! anything with a band name or anything along those lines kind of annoys me ! i don't personally have any myself but have a few ideas which have relevance to me . tramp stamps and girls with tattoos on there upper arms are a no no! tack

tacky - not a fan at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,568 ✭✭✭candy-gal1

Once its somewhere you can hide easily if needs be without being uncomfortable then they are cool.
Tramp stamps and those usual celtic designs you always see are a bit tacky though imho, if your going to get a tattoo make it original! I havent got one yet but hope to in the next month :D

Nike Logo tats are the biz. As are RA ones.

How braindead do you have to be to turn yourself into an advert?

What about Celtic tats down the arms of Celtic people?

No such thing as non-Celtic people, Celts have bred with just about every tribe in the world ;)

It depends on the person, the tattoo and where it is on their body. I cant say all tattoo's are tacky or all tattoo's are cool. I have seen some lovely tattoos that have meaning for the person, and then you have the indian ink brigade or tramp stamps that do look pretty bad.

Or skinny little hipsters getting big f**k off swallows done on their necks to go with their pork pie hats.

    Piss off lads :)

Are the swallows on necks hipsterish?
Loads of my friends came back from travelling with that done years ago, and on their wrists.
I thought it was a bit strange, and didn't 'get' it.
