I have actually… but by the end of the rolls I figured I’d be too tired to actually do any meaningful work and would be practicing while fatigued and not really learning that efficiently, so by just doing conditioning instead I figured I could be a zombie while I did it and it would still have a positive effect in that it would allow me to attack for longer, be more active and constantly fight out of bad positions, as a band-aid to my current inefficiency while rolling.

But if you think I’d be better served drilling afterwards, I’ll hold auditions. I guess just drilling 1 or 2 closed guard passes and side control escapes for 20 minutes a night would be a pretty big benefit with the Munster Open coming up.

I’ve my own KBs on the way anyway…. So will probably still end up doing extra conditioning. And I’m gonna run into the gym tonight so I can FINALLY make some of Bruno’s classes. 6x a week BJJ will be pretty sweet.
I see you took one of my nuggets of advice... see, I stuck to the BJJ.

To expand and actually reply on what I posted before, you're lasting the sessions no problem. Sure you're tired but you're still rolling by round 10. So I'd say your conditioning is good enough to train. There are others who are better than you but are bollixed after 4 rounds, so for them, I'd say "take 20 minutes at the end and do some kettlebell swings"

    DyanorwarImeanlike?

Mneh… said I’d give it a shot. Don’t go getting a big head and think I actually listen to you tho.

    <<Push back to square…>>

    BJJ - 2 hours
-had a rules meeting on how things are scored, still not 100% on them, but all I know is that I want to take a guy down, pass his guard, get a dominant position and either move onto something else or submit him, if he recovers anything, pass guard again, score more points, profit
-warm ups, felt a bit longer than usual
-rolling: 3 man group, 2 on, 1 ref - fight both guys in your group, ref a match, get a new group x3
-some z-gwuard and closed gwuard passing with Rohan

Good session last night. I’m starting to get a handle on the rules, think it’s something along the lines of 2 points for a takedown, sweep or knee on belly, 3 for a gwuard pass, 4 for mount or a back take.

The rolls were solid. Think all my rolls were with higher ranking guys and around my own weight. Every seemed to roll with a bit more intent last night which was cool. Even knowing I was being watched and judged made me step things up a bit. Starting to get really excited and nervous for the Munster open now. Like I could end up getting destroyed a few seconds inside the first round, or I could end up scoring a few points in matches. It’s all a bit of an unknown.

    <<Done, done...>>

    BJJ - 2 hours
    -warm ups
    -gwuard pass drills
    -sweeps...
    1) flower sweep - grab sleeve and opposite pants leg, block off leg by posting foot, kick them up under the arm pit
    2) scissor sweep fake to triangle - instead of sweeping from sleeve control, cut off their bicep with the unplanned leg, get the other arm thru so their elbow's clear of your leg, triangle the sh*t outta them with the unposted leg, create an angle, look in their ear
-rolling - about 15 minutes with Shane, and a 15 minute roll with Joe to the death

    Conditioning
    2.5km run in 13 minutes

Today brought new meaning to the word FUBAR. Was expecting a nice easy technical beginners class with Bruno... then Barry comes in and makes us do a load of fairly high intensity sh*t. Before asking us if we want to roll. Obviously i was going to say yes!!

Pulled off a MASSIVE face plant when rolling with Shane and just had an altogether lazy "I don't give a f*ck cos I'm way too tired" roll.

Then went at it with Joe... I can't decide if I like rolling with him or not (that's a lie, I do). We both tend to roll hard with each other and know each others game so it's always fun. He took my back at one point an was very close to choking me out from behind, also got very close to choking me from like a weird side mounty position. Fighting out of those took a lot out of me, but one I was out there was no way I was giving it up then and was determined to roll to the death. Ended up with a keylock after about 10 minutes in side control crossfacing him. Dunno how he hung on that long considering I've about 10kg on him. Was class!!

Was expecting the run home to be horrific but it ended up being alright. Pleasantly surprised with the pace.

Taking tomorrow off training cos I've rolled 4 days solid now and at quite a high intensity and want to be fresh for a good hard session on Saturday.

I think we're all operating at about 40%. I had to take today off. Last night seemed okay at the time but it caught up with everyone today we were all wrecked.

Yeah fact. Hit me like a ton bricks as soon as I went to roll this evening. Just wasn't interested in it - know when to push, know when to back off.

<<Where the girls at, girls at...??>>

    SATURDAY

    BJJ - 90 minutes
    -warm ups, loads
-rolling - 12x 5 minute rounds w/ a round break in the middle

I nearly died during the first round. 1 minute in and I was gassed. That never happens me and was a SERIOUS worry for the rest of the rounds, but once I got the mid way thru the second round I seemed fully warmed up and good to go.

It was a good solid training session. Happy out with my performance. Still frustrated by side control. If I get caught there I'm FUBAR'd. Got a good sweep from Z-gwuard to try, refined my guillotine attempts and did a bit of work on closed guard passing. Nice to see some of the things I'm working on come together while rolling.

    SUNDAY

    Strength - 10am

    90kg x3
    100kg 3x3

    A1) DB Split Squats:

    32kg x5

    A2) Chins:
    BW +17.5kg x5
    BW +22.5kg x5
    BW +27.5kg x5

B1) Single Leg DLs w/ dumbbells
    10kg x5
    15kg x5
    17kg x5
    20kg x5
    22kg x5

    B2) One arm DB press:
    10kg x5
    15kg x5
    20kg x5
    25kg x5
    30kg x5

    C) Pallof Press:

    D) EZ Bar Curls -all plate weight only:
    20kg x12
    25kg x12
    30kg x12

Lifting was good... Power cleans were a bit bleurgh, but I'm not doing them as frequently as I'd like, so can't really complain. Back to 5x2 next time and an increase on the weight from my previous sesh.

Split squats and chins were good... starting to move some better weight on them and still getting thru the sets ok.

Single leg DLs are improving, DB press was more of a challenge today too.

Loaded up the pallof press today for the first time and could definitely feel the difference. Was working really hard to stabilise.

    Conditioning - 7pm
    6km run - 33 minutes 18 seconds
    Average HR: 150bpm

    Conditioning - 8.30pm
    Turkish Get Ups:
16kg KB x10 minute continuous, switching hands each rep

Run was grand.. down 30 seconds on my last 6k at a lower average heart rate too. Was good to keep going but my shin was starting to tighten up so will be increasing the mileage slowly. Will try to get a 4km in 2x during the week and a longer run on the weekend. Maybe just another 6km or something.

Got my competition KBs today so decided to christen them with some get ups this evening. Went well. Hoping to god that they help my shoulders.

    <<The way I are…>>

    MONDAY

    BJJ - 2 hours
-did a ton of foam rolling and stretching and stuff before training
-played about with a few side control escapes and guard passes
    -warm ups (effort… bleurgh)
-did some guard passing stuff at the start
    -sweeps from butterly
    1) get underhooks
    2) sweep towards head
    3) pull sideways and back towards head side, use foot opposite head to elevate the legs
    4) ‘free’ foot goes to the mat and drives to hard to give an extra push to rotate over ala side rolls in warm ups
    5) If the base off with their leg, monkey foot it just over there knee and flip it out
-more guard passing starting from butterfly
    -few rolls

Shocking performance. Was disgusted with myself all the way thru. The sweeps weren’t working great and I just wasn’t interested. But when it came time to do them against resisting partners at the end, I was pulling them off better. Not a great day.

    <<Come and get me some…>>

    TUESDAY

    BJJ - 1 hour
    -warm ups
-3 position knee on belly drill
    -Turtle drill
    -Half gwuard sweeps
    1) underhook leg, head on dudes chest/stomach
    2) back to the mat pulling him onto you, switch leg lock so you can move hips
    3) get the underhooked leg over your shoulder and then lock in by your grabbing gi/pants leg
    4) move hips so you’re chest to chest with each other
    5) underhook other leg and block hip with leg
    6) kick down to sweep
    -Half gwuard escape
    1) instead of under hooking the guys leg, you just under hook the arm deep on the opposite side, push down with your shoulder, switch foot position and slip out to the back
-Saw a few different variations of the sweep and escape
-Rolled for about 10 minutes w/ Joe

    Conditioning
5 minutes of continuous get ups with a 16kg KB, did a couple of reps with a 24 too

Better sesson yesterday, but still not great. Dunno why I’m sucking so hard. Going for 600kcals of burgery goodness and a ton of caffeine before training tonight to kick my a55 into gear.

    <<I’m searching for…>>

    WEDNESDAY

    BJJ - 2 hours
-warm ups on a crammed mat
-some sweep dealio that I’m not even going to bother try pretending to understand, instead I’ll just take away the key point that I should be working for wrist control, elbow control and then body control. And always break their grips before they can smash you down
-rolled 8x rounds, 5x with blue belts heavier than me, 1x with a heavier white belt, and 2x with lower weight guys
-got lots of tips on cross collar chokes off Neil and tried to use them as I went, my hands are in tatters today

Very tired all day, good session last night tho… Got to work on my passing against bigger, heavier and more skillful guys, picked up some good tips and had a good time. Must have a look back over my log later and see where my total mat hours are at. I reckon I'll get about 35-40 in this month.

Will probs go for a light 4k jog later just to get my body a bit used to running again.

Training is going well, roll on the munster open.

    <<Bounce...>>

    BJJ - 90 minutes
-knee on belly and turtle drills to warm up
-Bruno showed us a ton of stuff from the back
    1) reach over the shoulder and grab dude's lapel
    2) feed it up til it's deep, grab other lapel and pull down
    3) pop goes head
3etc) alternately if he goes to hand fight, figure 4 the hand and pull out an arm bar, or shoot your arm under and chop towards hte back of his neck to choke
    4) bow and arrow using similar set up without hand as deep, grab knee, open space ala arm bar and close up your ankles

-Then 6x 1 minute rounds starting in back control, and 6 starting from back control
-Then 3x 5 minute rounds of rolling

Conditioning - later on at home
    Turkish Get Ups:
16kg KB x10 minutes continuous switching hands each rep

Good BJJ session... I like back control. I'm not very good in it, but I like it all the same!!!

The TGUs were good. Gonna try just get as much of them in as possible to hopefully keep my shoulders healthy.

Study that session carefully because that's like me teaching butterfly guard. Bruno gets me with some variation of what he taught last night a lot. You'll also only have the Brazilian wizard for another few weeks so make use of him.

    <<Notorious...>>

    FRIDAY

    BJJ - 2 hours
    -warm ups
-reviewing the sweeps from the week
    -90 minutes of gwuard passing

Good sesh. I really like that guard passing session. First points win so every mini-roll is balls to the wall.

    BJJ - 90 minutes
-kyuzo open day so lots of faffing about
    -warm ups
    -side control drills
    -americana from side control
    -light rolling

This was nice... I was feeling really beat up so an easy session just f*cking about was delightful. Gonna go caluclate mat time since I started now...

    <<Boom boom boom...>>

    BJJ - 2.5 hours
-lots of foam rolling and stuff to warm up
-was in early so drilled a couple of things:
    1) Arm bar from mount - get up high, pull one shoulder off the mat, sit back with weight on him to pin and create space for hte leg to come over his face, control the sit back
    2) Cross collar choke from mount - get the deep grip and then post off really wide to the opposite side with your head and hand, drag that elbow back across his face and keep that head post
-then we drilled guard pulls... get grip first, kick away the back leg HARD, or sit off onto his hip
-did a few rounds of guard pulls into short rolls
    -THEENNNNN...
-Like 45+minutes of 2 minute rounds starting standing, 15 second recovery - tough

Good session. Bit beat up today... foot's sore, hand's bruised and my thumb feels very weird. Hoping for some light tekkers tonight.

    <<Pogo pogo>>

Last Tuesday - 2 hours of BJJ
Last Wednesday - 2 hours of BJJ
Last Saturday - Munster open BJJ, report below

    2011 MUNSTER OPEN

Gi – 0 win, 1 loss (single elimination)
Weighed in at 91kg for the 94.3kg class… b*llox!!! Then I saw the size of the lads there… all thick shovel hand eastern Europeans. Which was a pretty good sign I was screwed!! Pulled guard and got him into my closed quite well. Hand fighting for grips etc for a while. He had a really solid base so the sweep was never really on. Got my left hand deep for a cross collar choke, but never locked in the right hand well. He kept working to pass guard and my legs were getting seriously tired at that stage. I tried to set up a scissor sweep and he began to pass from there. In the scramble that followed he scored an advantage as I went to turtle. Still no points scored, so wide open. I got lazy in turtle and he pulled out an arm bar and I tapped. Think he got to the final and was beaten there.

    NoGi - 1 win, 1 loss

MATCH 1: Got good underhooks on the dude, leg tripped and went straight to side control in the scramble. Good solid cross face on him as I tried to transition to knee on belly, but he kept blocking. Switch to scarf hold a couple of times to keep position, transitioned back to side and eventually got knee on belly. Mounted him but he bucked me off. Back to half guard which meant I got a chance to score more points for a guard pass. Won it like 10-0 or something. Never really threatened a sub cos I knew I was well up on points and happy out at that.

MATCH 2: Went up against some monster, tall eastern European dude with massive hands… Pulled guard but he seemed to catch a leg as it went down so he scored the take down. Went to guard, couldn’t break his posture at all – he’d very solid posting on my hips and I just didn’t do a good job in general. He passed, got side/control scraf hold and was solid from there. I couldn’t buck him off or recover guard and the whole match is a bit of a blur. Was in total survival mode for it tbh. Ended with him winning like 5-0 or something on points, and he went on to win the whole thing. Beating a dude who I was told was a Irish junior Olympian in Judo (who beat the guy that beat me in my gi match), so he was pretty good!!

Happy enough with my no gi performance. Gi was pathetic. Definitely need to work on being more active in turle, sweeps and cross collar chokes, amongest hunderds of other things. Learned a lot tho! Oh and I missed at least 3 school boy sweeps too. Nigs.

That's just my assesment, some of the guys I train with my have a different take.

Neck's in bits, but back training tomorrow.

Hanley, in the last couple of weeks i've been "trying" to do some split squats. Haven't done them in a couple of years, was never great at them was always just OK. How do you battle the balance issue. I find that's the hardest thing to master. I do them with a dumbell in each hand as opposed to a plate held in between the arms. Is it just a situation of have some bloody patience (which is something i've never had!) and you'll gradually find your balance will improve?

    Cheers.

I think your set up will have alot to do with it. Too narrow a base (ie one foot almost directly in line with the other) will lead to side to side swaying. A short base length is going to tip your weight forward and cause problems there too.

Patience is important too tho ;)
