Just wondering what new channels are possible for UPC to get on board?

Obvious one is the Channel 5 group, there is not much choice out there as far as I can see, anyone know of anymore?

Channel 5 won't happen I was told, because some of the Channel 5 programming such as Home and Away and Neighbours is part of RTE's coverage who will not allow it in the same way TV3 will not allow the ITV channels.

At this rate they will block Al Jazeera for showing Dancing on Ice! :D FFS!

I cant understand why they cant block certain shows, they are able to do it with ESPN HD during UEFA Cup games!
Sky do it with Channel 4 for some programmes!

I believe that UPC's parent company has an interest/share in some tv channels. Not sure what they are but if they do, why can't they show them. Also, some more movie channels would be great like TCM2, True Movies 1 and 2, Movies for Men etc.... and they are all available, free to air on sat...

TCM 2 is encrypted on satellite.

LibertyGlobal (parent company of UPC Broadband) own Chello Zone which operates the CBS-branded channels in the UK (their counterparts on the Continent are branded "Zone ______"). Zone Reality used to be on UPC years ago, I never really watched it though. Why these channels are not on UPC Ireland I have no idea.

Personally for me, I'd like to see Sky Atlantic obviously. The aforementioned CBS/Chello channels. The missing UKTV channels, but particularly Watch.

Right now we know we are getting 5 new channels, what are the possibilities? Im assuming the 5 will be linked with one company!

The CBS channels would be my guess. It would make sense as UPC's parent company owns a stake in them.

just because they have the same parent compnay doesn't mean much. there may be no buisness link what so ever. remember Aer Lingus i approx 30% owned by Ryan air and you don't see them code sharing on flights.

you don't see ferrari parts in Fiats...

Ok then. UPC will never have the CBS channels because they come under the same umbrella.

What you are forgetting is that although your examples are owned by the same people they still compete amongst themselves (Ryanair v Aer Lingus). UPC is a television channel provider. They are in the business of providing television channels so why wouldn't they provide Liberty Global owned television channels?

Silly thread . This is UPC we know they will give us rubbish, nothing will make up for the shambles of losing the itvs.

    5 new channels:

    RTE +1
    RTE 2 +1
    TV3 +1
    TV3 +2
    TV3 +3

    Can't wait!

All joking aside, there are actually some new RTE channels coming to DTT, that might end up on UPC:

    RTE 2 HD
    RTE 1 +1
    RTE News Now
    RTE Junior

RTÉ Jr is not just the side service of TRTÉ? I'm sure it'll just be the two.

As for News Now I've heard it's just a rolling record stream like on website.

Yes, it is exactly the same as on the website.

I didn't say they were any good :)

Well RTE 2 HD would be good for sports.

I must say, RTÉ really are a sham. They shouldn't even bother.
DAB is already a failure on their part, but that's an entirely different discussion.

RTÉ 2 HD may be good for sports but they'll transmit the footage well, then kick back to their poorly designed on-screen idents and other programming.

    Oh dear!

Do you not give things a chance before they kick off properly?

Don't know about the additional DTT channels, but the new digital version of Aertel currently testing on DTT should hopefully be launching later this year on UPC :)

Aertel in HD would be pretty cool!

According to twitter RTÉ One + 1 will be EPG 126.

I'm really hoping for RTE2 HD. It'd be a leap forward for watching Irish sport. Any idea of a timeframe for this one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,333 ✭✭✭✭ted1

think they were testing RET+1 yesterday.

The watermark on channel 101 whatever you call it was displaying RTE+1.
however it was in real time.

Which/whose EPG is that on Patrick? Thanks

UPC were at my door last night trying to flog me the house phone. I told her I was thinking of moving to sky as they had lost the ITV channels and she said they were getting them back!

Lies. Some salespeople are good at that when trying to make a sale.

UPC. I know FX is on that number at the moment. But that's what UPC said on twitter, it could be wrong.

So if upc are getting the dtt channels, I'd say sky will too. It's not really a fair replacement for the itv's as they are free anyway. Will upc include the dtt channels when saorview is launched?

Thanks, I hope that's not one of the "5 or 6 channels" they've promised though!

yes, they tell you what you want to hear even if they've nothing to back it up.
