Means nothing. Anybody can enter negotiations, it doesn't mean they are going to get them.

How come upc doesn't carry Discovery Home and Health channel?

They used to carry it on 504 but replaced it with 'ID' Investigation Discovery - seemed a bizzare decision at the time but ID has a HD variation and it appeared on UPC's HD service when launched.

There are other Discovery channels not carried by UPC

Exactly - chances of Sky making their HD channels available anytime soon are slim.

Regarding UPC and new channels - their CEO said on Today FM that new channels would be available in June with more in July....

My wife was on to upc about a possible change to sky, she decided to stay with upc. The news from the customer support guy is that films for men is one of the new channels coming "soon".

Considering upc was saying new channels coming "soon" in april after the itv lost channels, I am not inspired with hope.

Got a letter the other day announcing two new channels. True Movies/film and some Health/Food channel. Threw away the flyer,so I can't specify any further.
Main focus of the letter for me was increased speed( up to 20mbs) and bigger download capacity(500gb), so I'm happy out.

Don't forget the additional charge of 6 eur for this increased capacity.

My letter only mentioned a price increase for those who use the call barring service at €3.30 (excluding premium rate call barring)

There was a flyer also enclosed where the 20MB broadband with 500GB download limit was priced at 31eur per month... Which is up from the current 25eur per month that the 12mb we're being upgraded from, costs. They should have spelled that out on the letter rather than sneakily do it via a flyer which most people would ignore/throw out.

Films for Men - another free to air garbage channel, it has been mentioned elsewhere that UPC are adding this channel, an insult to subscribers imo.

Lets be honest here, anything less than the Channel 5 brand will be unacceptable

So without reading the whole thread am I correct in thinking channel 5 is just not going to happen?

Fourteen years after its launch, you gotta think that if it was going to happen it would have happened long ago. Channel 5, uniquely of British commercial broadcasters, show no interest in the Irish market whatsoever. That's their call I'm afraid.

In fairness *TV doesn't show much interest either. Just because we can get UTV doesn't equate it to interest.

I would say only Channel 4 shows any real interest. You can even use 4oD in Ireland and could pretty much from launch.

As regards channels, there are so many free-to-air ones with at least some appeal that they don't carry it's astounding. (If they were approaching capacity on cable that would be one thing, but based on the number they used to have, and comparing with Virgin, they're obviously not)

All the international versions of European national broadcasters for one (Deutsche Welle etc.) would be quite happy to arrange carriage I'm sure. They might not appeal to everyone, but it's not as if they couple of new channels promised are pushing the limit. UPC have plenty of space left on digital.

Also there's so many they have carriage agreements with, with no sign of the HD variants coming. The worst IMO is FX, as they introduced FX after its HD version had already come into existence, without introducing FX HD at the same time.

They should put Setanta Sports 1 on free to air like they do with Setanta Ireland.

You may be confusing UTV with ITV plc. UTV makes a large portion of its advertising revenue from the Republic of Ireland. Not as large a portion as it did during the heafty days of the early to mid 1990s (you have to remember that before TG4 launched in 1996, UTV and Channel 4 were your only alternatives to RTÉ for Irish advertising - there were no Irish advertisements on Sky in those days) but it still makes a big enough sum that if it disappeared it would be a serious dent in their income.

ITV plc's seeming lack of interest in Ireland is not what you may think. It is more a result of TV3 actively trying to keep ITV out of the Irish market through threats of legal action. TV3 has a contract with ITV for the exclusive supply of programming and has not been impressed when ITV tries to supply programming directly into Ireland (witness the loss of ITV2/3/4 on UPC). But you do not bite the hand that feeds you and live to tell the tale easily. ITV may at some point decide that running its own operation in Ireland is worth more to it than its programme supply agreement with TV3. If at some point it decides that, TV3 may find that ITV is not so willing to renegotiate the agreement next time it comes up, or may drive a hard bargain.

I hope next time ITV only sell non exclusive or shared rights to TV3. I'd expect ITV could still extract almost as much from TV3 as for exclusive rights. After all what would TV3 do without ITV's content.

I think TV3 would still do pretty well even if faced with direct competition from ITV, due to being better known, better EPG slot, on saorview and Irish content mixed in.

In fact I think it would be very good for Irish broadcasting as it would force TV3 to put more effort into Irish content to differentiate itself from ITV.

I meant UTV included, hence the asterisk. I don't count accepting advertisers targeting ROI as "interest". Money is money, obviously if someone pays the price, they're not going to care whether the target of the ad is the North or Mars.
