I know my manifesto sounds quite Ents based but that's because it's a significant destination of the Unions money. The financial aspects of this is outside the remit of the Ents officer, especially after the introduction of the new constitution. My main area of interest isn't the Ents itself, but the way it's funded and more ways to spend the Unions money more efficiently to keep more money in the pocket of the student.

    Ah I understand now, thanks.
Will we get the constitution vote with the election vote tomorrow or are they seperate?

As far as I know you'll get all your voting sheets together. =)

You'll be given a voting sheet for the constitution when you receive the Exec election sheets from the polling booth tomorrow.

So, re the swimming pool I sent Grace the following mail on facebook:
    Hi Grace,

I know you're probably very busy, but I have a quick question which I would really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

It's about the proposed swimming pool on the north campus. I am curious as to how involved the Swimming Development Officer Martin McGann has been in your proposal to build a swimming pool on the north campus, and also in your campaign more generally (possibly in terms of advocating voting for you among his student acquaintences, and in terms of financial support).

I ask because I work in the swimming pool on the south campus and I've heard at least one other member of staff (who otherwise has nothing to do with the SU) has been asked to campaign for you. Fair enough if you want to support the proposal, and the 150 surcharge on the student registration fee it would likely necessitate, but it being 'suggested' to our non-student staff that they campaign for you seems... out of line and I was wondering if you knew about it beforehand.

I think I ought to mention that I will likely share your response with boards.ie, and possibly the student observer. However, I respect that you are most likely well-intentioned and I will not twist or otherwise unfairly reflect your answer.

    Regards,
    (Me)

    Yesterday, I got this response:
    (Me),

Sorry I am only getting onto Facebook now as I have been up to my eyeballs with work etc for the past few days.

I have had meetings with both Martin McGann and Paul Davis the sports development officer of how we can develop the sports facilities in the NUI Maynooth as I am an active member of the Rugby club I felt that I would like to include this in my manifesto. A swimming pool on the North Campus was suggested and I merely used this as an example in my manifesto to how I would like to see the facilites improved. If you look at Aengus' manifesto you will also see that he included a swimming pool on the North Campus as part of his manifesto.

I have not approached any staff member from the swimming pool nor would I, I would also like to agree with you that I do feel that this is out of line and I will be forwarding this message onto Martin myself and state that if the students from the NUIM Swimming and Waterpolo clubs would like to help me then they are more then welcome.

However if Martin would like to encourage the members to vote for me then I do not see a problem there as he may feel I might be the best candidate for the job, but on the other hand I have had a member of the waterpolo team approach me who is helping another candidate for the same position as I am running and I said I don't want to feel any student feel that they are pressured into voting for me but to please consider me for their number 2. As I think it is important for students to have their own opinion in how they would like to see their Union run.

I hope this answers your question that you had and if you would like to speak to me in person you are more then welcome to come up to me at anytime.

    Le grá
    Grace xxx

Seems fair enough to me. I know the plans for the new swimming pool are actually quite well advanced and mainly just need approval and funding, so it's not the pipe dream some people are making it out to be. I wrote back to say I still think university staff should stay out of elections in the interest of fairness as it's the student rather than the staff voice which ought to be represented in the Students Union. Especially if the staff voice is speaking mainly out of self-interest. This may or may not have been hypocritical of me.

The more people tell me/harass me to vote for such and such, the more likely I am to remember that name so as not to vote for them come election day.

Fastest paper-stampers in the land, and colour-coded pages FTW :D

Queues are forming even this early, can't imagine what it'll be like later

Good luck to all the honest candidates wanting positions to make a difference :)

Best of luck to everyone running today. Win or lose, running for an exec position is one of the best things you can ever do, and fair play for putting your name on the ballot.

Didn't like only having one person to vote for maybe? Thinking if it reopens they'll have a shot at getting the position themselves?

Ok guys, my reaction to some of the crap posted here

"I hear Declan Meenagh is bringing a massive labour youth rent a crowd today."
Well Nision, as Robs campaign manager I'd see why spreading misinformation like this would be something you'd be motivated in doing. For the record, 2 of my friends from outside the college helped me, one for a bit of yesterday and today and the for the end of today.

Not voting for someone for being in a political party really stupid, the people who are involved in parties are the ones who understand how things work and are active and able to get things done.

Are you saying I dont understand how things work and I am incapable of getting things done because I am not involved in a political party?

No, but political involvement is a good thing giving experience, so it's not a bad thing, and it's not a reason not to vote for someone.

I think political affiliations could adversely affect SU policies. Student politics and national politics need to be more firmly divided and unfortunately they aren't.
