It really takes the biscuit that Sky are allowed input into this. Not only are they completely unregulated by any Irish body, but they don't even pay bloody VAT to the exchequer. Unsurprisingly, they're whinging about Saorsat - no doubt afraid that it will lose them subscriptions.

Considering as Ireland is about one place in World where so far the Government hasn't put any money into the DSO process.

The Sunday Times article said that Sky News was concerned about being disadvantaged by RTÉ News Now. Sky News need not worry, because RTÉ's international coverage is pale by comparison. Even ITN does a better job at world news that RTÉ does.

TV3's submission is just an endless myopic complaint. AFAIK Channel 4 broadcast most of the shows on their list of shows that didn't appear on PBS channels in the UK.

Look Taoiseach, RTÉ don't have the same resources as Sky or ITN.

It really should be of no concern to Comreg/BAI/DCENR or anyone else in Ireland whether Sky News is disadvantaged or not. In any case, it's proposed that Sky News be spun off as part of the conditions attached to the Murdoch takeover.

Murdoch 'would have sold his granny' for BSkyB

Do we know if the Competition Authority will have to look at this takeover?

The Irish Competition Authority? They have zero influence or say in that matter.

    ha ha

Murdoch has controlled Sky for years so Europe and Ofcom think it doesn't make any difference.

Why? When they needed to look into the VMTV takeover by Sky???? Missed opportunity.

How could they have any influence legally?

Why were they asked about the VMTV takeover? The Minister of Trade is responsible for such takeovers and mergers.

Are you on about the UK Minister of Trade?

That's the point. So why would Sky News regard RTÉ News Now as a threat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

Why did newspapers fuss about RTE's web site either?

    Baffling.

No our Minister for Trade and our Competition Authority both had to approve BSkyB's takeover of the VMTV set of TV channels. I don't see why they wouldn't have to approve Mr. Murdock's takeover of Sky.

Local free news. MTV aren't the biggest music channel in each territory that they are in as the can't provide local talent, This is why MTV began to break up each territory in the late 1990's. Over all Sky has about 12% of the opt-out services in Ireland (I include their jointed owned Nick and Comedy Central channels).

Also if RTÉ do as is suggested by most of the individuals (bar one who just gave out about having to pay the licence fee) RTÉ News Now will have to carry foreign language news items from other EU nations.

They even had to approve FIVE being bought by Northern and Shell !

Why wouldn't you believe me :( also discussed here on boards a while back.

Having read those decisions, it looks like a rubber-stamping exercise. How could they block the merger of companies based outside of Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

    They can't
Which is why a bunch of Swedish Satellite TV channels are notionally based in UK and regulated by Ofcom to avoid the Swedish Regulator.

I never said anything about the BAI. Also notionally under the AVWF the BAI and its Swedish equivalent can complain to OfCom. I don't know how far it would get them.

I didn't mention BAI in that post either

Sorry, I thought you implied the BAI couldn't when you went on to mentioned both the Swedish and British regulators.

Slightly off topic but thought i would post this in here. RTE News Now has been covering the Japanese earth quake all morning. They have been relaying NHK world news service. Great to see something different on RTE News Now. Hopefully they will start to link up with other news stations when fully launched.

It took them long enough to do so though. They were repeating a webcam of Morning Ireland from 9 am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 492 ✭✭glimmerman123

I hope they add more live news content after they officially launch. Even if it's means linking up with other news broadcasters until the funds are in place to add original news content.

I hope the new minister can reverse the decision to not allow advertising, as how will they fund news-gathering without it.

If it is to be a news channel, it must have reporters and reports.

It would be better than the silly dead air during shows like "Morning Ireland"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

PSB news channel shouldn't have adverts.

RTE1 & 2 has more than enough adverts to pay for it if they put a €55K cap on presenter so called earnings. Crazy what is paid to people for being in front of microphone or camera.

Nor should RTE 1 Radio except between programs.

Yes, I agree. It's advertising without the adverts.

It would be good if they could rethink that awful layout, copying a dreadful Sky News and the Bloomberg sad layout. Why have a phosphor burning ticker tape?

They should be prepared to drop any advertising if the News warranted.

Perhaps all this will be sorted on eventual launch.

@Watty yes it would be lovely if RTÉ could manage their news services without advertising, it's just annoying having 2 minute gaps during shows.

@Sam I've been wondering what kind of damage that sidebar thingy does to a screen after prolonged viewing.

Good point...lcd should be ok but plasma screens might have a imprint after a while of constant viewing but nearly every news channel has those constant static graphics so i might well be wrong
