I would like to thank TV3 and 3e for being on Saorview as I could not recieve either channel before FTA.
TV3 with Champions League football on a Tuesday which could not be recieved on Freesat, I like the Vincent Brown show. Good weather.
3e with the Irish version of 'Take me out' is also watched and enjoyed in my house.

You should thank RTÉ since TV3 does not pay to be on the DTT service. Take Me Out is a repeat of a repeat of a repeat of a repeat.

This is highly speculative and almost certainly wrong if only cos I'm doubting they will ever get off the ground but the people behind www.electricsofa.co.uk say they are looking into the Irish market (as mentioned in broadcasting forum thread) if this is true then rather than buying into some community channels might they be looking to take out space on the second MUX?

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

And where do they get the money? Much more expensive than Satellite or cable.

So Pat Carey has made is decision.

    RTÉ JR approved
    RTÉ News Now approved
RTÉ TWO HD approved (Multiplex 2)
RTÉ Plus (Phase 1) approved for 4 years
RTÉ Plus (Phase 2) Not Allowed.

RTÉ Plus (Phase 2) being the only real good news for the viewer.

    http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/Press+Releases/Minister+Carey+Issues+Consent+for+New+RT%C3%89+Services.htm

    - RTÉ One and Two in full HD by 2013
    - RTÉ News Now will carry no advertising
    - RTÉ Plus only for 4 years (RTÉ 1 +1)
    - Cost limited to €8.5m over 5 years.
    - Must carry channels on all platforms
    - BAI to report back to Department before May launch of Saorview on new services including OTV and IFB Channel.

Also I assume that RTÉ Plus will be a full 24 channel on MUX 1???? As RTÉ Two HD moves to Mux 2.
    The RTÉjr/RTÉ Plus channel shall be carried on the first multiplex until 1 September 2011 and from 1 September 2011 shall be transferred to the second multiplex;

DCENR is specifying too much detail, some stuff they should keep their inexpert nose out off (PSB mux allocation)

But the no Adverts on RTEjr and RTE News I'm 100% in favour of. It IS the PSB we are talking about.

I did say though people buying USB sticks for PVRs needed Dual tuners.

Yes but while we all might deride the licence fee, it doesn't cover both DTT role out and TV channels.

RTÉjr should have no ads but RTÉ News Now should provide the same advertising as RTÉ One and Two.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

TV3, 3e, TG4, Oireachtas Reports, Film Board's Film Channel, anyone else prepared to pay the money to be carried FTA and gets a BAI licence.

Close down rte2??? No +1 service and no HD SPORT???? What a stupid comment. If tv 3 really wanted to compete they need to improve their own service before looking to limit the public service! Sounds like the cant stand the competition and gave no real alternative proposal

RTÉ will not be allowed to carry ads on News Now or the Junior channel. By launching these channels, RTÉ is simply enhancing its provision of public service broadcasting. TV3 shelved the Monday edition of Tonight with Vincent Browne to make way for I'm a Celebrity... and The Apprentice. Therefore, TV3 is in no position to criticise RTÉ.

Your on shaky territory there. TV3 have no grounds as they really haven't helped the expensive role out of DTT. They have sat back and watched, TV3 at any stage could have suggested providing their "Expertise" into the project or that they would help pay for some of the infrasture. Indeed they could set up an ad free children's channel or maybe even a children's channel.

There is enough of that on astra 19.2 and 28.2 and freeview without filling valuwble spectrum space with that smut on saorview in my opinion.

I did not mean that kind of adult. I would like some programmes for grown-ups, that is all. I think the Xposed type of programme for brainless teenage wannabees, Midlife for bored housewives, and endless ITV1 re-broadcasts. They are little more than a deflector service.

According to the Briefing on page 24 of The Sunday Times, the decision on RTÉ News Now has upset media rivals and that the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland admits that the 24-hour news channel may have "some impact" on Sky News and on newspapers.

Sky News complained that public funding of BBC News 24 was a breach of EU law. However, the European Commission ruled that the licence fee should be considered state aid but that such aid was justified due to the public service remit of the BBC and that it did not exceed actual costs.

So the BAI is setting itself up as a comedy act now .

And what on earth is the BAI considering Sky News for anyway since Sky says it's not subject to Irish regulation .

Can you post a scan of the of the article?

Sky News is not regulated here so any impact on it by RTÉ News Now need not be taken into account. Probably included in the article because it has the same owners as the Sunday Times.

NNI (incl The Sunday Times) have been moaning about RTÉ using licence fee money to provide free news via its website for a while now. News International (Rupert Murdoch), owners of the Sunday Times, are one of the biggest movers behind ending free online news.
