I'm still not convinced that the carriers have blocked this update... it doesn't make any sense for them to. It's not as if out Windows Phone 7s are so old that they want us to move onto newer models. Surely an update like this one and the copy-and-paste ones can only help them - or at least there's no downside to letting people update their phones.

The only reason I can think that carriers have blocked this update is that they don't want phones on their network to experience the same problems as the Samsung Omnia 7 has (i.e. bricking).

I think Microsoft and maybe the carriers have both halted this update due to the problems that some phones have had. They want to get them fixed before continuing mass distribution of this update.

I just dont trust them in that way.

I remember with HD2 they released a few update and thats it. While Tmo and HTC kept releasing updates all the time. It was not like they had any other Windows Mobile devices to sell but they just didnt issue further updates as HTC and other networks did. One of many reasons why i dont like o2 :S

    Their just lazy *****

Microsoft software update 'kills' Windows mobiles

Microsoft has withdrawn a software update for its Windows Phone system after it made some handsets unusable.

In a statement, Microsoft said: "We have identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacts a small number of phones.

"We have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue and as soon as possible will redistribute the update."

It is really disappointing. I hope that they get to the bottom of it as soon as possible and get it working properly again... and that Windows Phone 7 can recover from this. :(

Yeah its not easy for MS. The first update and samsung phones screwed them up :S alot of bad publicity. Atleast they informed carriers that this happend and their willing to replace the phones that were bricked due to the update. And to wait for the update for the update that was meant to improve updating system lol :D

As far as ive seen from XDA that WindowsPhoneSupport on twitter said that the fix will be released in 3 days from the launch of update.

Apparantly a hard-reset or pulling the battery fixes the 'bricking' problem, so not the end of the world really (if that's true).

    only teething problems

only worry I'd have about the update system is for the kernel - most devices have different ones, and can affect things
still, there is always Recovery Mode :D

They are only teething problems, to be fair. But I'm worried at how much damage this is going to do to the reputation of Windows Phone 7. No one wants a phone that might brick up after an update. I sure don't. It's a really gorgeous phone and it deserves to do well.

You wouldn't really. This is only an update in preparation for the main NoDo update coming in a couple of weeks. :)

Did a hard reset on my phone which wasn't updating yesterday, just too see if the error was because I had used more of the storage. Update went through fine.

Here's the latest from the Telegraph via the Indo
Microsoft Windows Phone 7 update crashes smartphones
    By Christopher Williams
    Thursday February 24 2011
Microsoft has been forced to withdraw an update to its Windows Phone 7 operating system after it crashed users' phones.

The update, the firm's first for Windows Phone 7, was itself designed to improve the updating process, but instead caused crashes and made some devices completely unusable.

The problems began when the update was released on Tuesday and affect Samsung smartphones running Windows Phone 7, including the top-of-the-range Omnia 7. Users also reported that vital data such as contacts were deleted.

A Microsoft spokesman said it had withdrawn the update in response to complaints and would release a new version.

"We have identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process that impacts a small number of phones," a spokesman said.

"We have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue and as soon as possible will redistribute the update."

Via Twitter, Microsoft also told those whose smartphone has been "bricked" to return it to their retailer.

The glitch is a blow to Microsoft's hopes that Windows Phone 7 will catch up with Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems.

The market leaders have each developed a smooth update cycle process that builds on their software's features and allow them to support more sophisticated apps.

Windows Phone 7 was received as a massive improvement on Microsoft's previous smartphone operating system when it was launched in October, but news its first update has caused major inconvenience for users will be seized on by the firm's critics.

Alex Roebuck, a British Omnia 7 user, said overnight on Twitter: "It's 1am here in the UK. Have to go to work tomorrow with no phone. Very unhappy."

Yeah i can imagine Steve Ballmer pulling out the rest of his hair out :)

This is really bad publicity. Alot of angry people who will turn from happy to unhappy and will go around telling everyone how **** it was.

My previous phone ran on Windows Mobile 6.5, while the hardware itself was excellent, great camera and slide out keyboard (Samsung Omnia Pro B7610), it was the phone I've hated the most. It was slow as **** and required several reboots daily, one good thing is that it was fairly hardy, even my baby never managed to break it. However it put me off getting another Windows phone and it's a shame this has happened, I'm sure it will all come good eventually.

Well my finger is still tending to point towards Samsung to blame. Just for the bare fact that they fecked up before with Samsung Capacitive before when rolling out an Android update and ending up bricking certain amount of phones in the US.

No HTC or LG phones seem to have been bricked.

Does anyone know if there are any phone covers available for the HTC HD7 on E-Bay or similar? I had a quick look but nothing turned up.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

XDA Developers have model specific forums for each of the models (well the HD7 and omnia anyway, haven't checked the others), and they have accessories sub-forums as well:

I picket up a wallet type cover for mine last week on ebay about €9 incl postage. Put 'hd7 cover' into search and you get 47 results

You know you're absolutely right. I have no idea what I searched for but whatever it was, it didn't find anything :o.

I'm still thinking that it was samsungs fault for updates. One of their updates for android Samsung Epic 4G in the US was stopped cause it was causing issues ending up in a need of a hard reset. So continuum, Epic and Omnia/focus. Makes a pretty strong case considering LG and HTC didn't have problems.

    got an omnia 7 today.

And oh dear. Its scarry now to look at the HD7 now comparing the screens.

Will see more difference in the day to day use when i get to play with it for longer regarding the performance.

Build quality wise Omnia is ahead. It feels more sturdy and is alot lighter.

Design wise i still preffer the HD7. (though them damn buttons on HD7 wreck my head)

App loading times seems to be alot faster too on the Omnia 7 (though omnia seems to freeze temporarily alot :S, like a little glitch)

Internal memory on Omnia is a killer too. After installing all my apps got 5GB left now :S

The update seems to be pulled anyway cause got no notification for it. (Meteor Samsung Omnia 7)

As in the Omnia has a better screen?

Omnia has the better screen. You wouldnt notice it if you just had the HD7 on its own.

Though things that bugs me on the Omnia. Its like pixelation. But only happens with colours. Doesnt seem to be clear as LCD

Weirdest thing is the Omnia is nearly exact the same size as the HD7.

Omnia is a bit taller. Though not as wide. But only by a small margin. It nearly fits into the HD7 silicon case ;)

Also Omnia is very very slippery compared to the HD7. Doesnt fit into the hand as nice as the HD7 does. So definetly need a silicon case.

Also miss the LED indicator :S used to be handy for notifications and to know when its charging or finished charging

EDIT: Its funny the flow of cheap Omnia 7's on adverts.ie. Peepz just buy them for the xbox and sell the phone on after :D Got mine for 250 :)

Did anyone with a locked Omnia 7 to meteor recieve an update that was released on 2nd of March?

Or was it for free sim ones?

I'm the same as evolutionqy7, I have a meteor locked Omnia 7, tried to get the update but failed because the windows drivers couldn't be installed. I checked again today and it says my phone is up to date (old version).

NVM :) mmm dont go for the cheapest ones on ebay. Their no good anyway. Pay more get more :)

I got a cheap gel case on eBay for my LG Optimus 7, the plan was to use it till I found a good leather case, but its actually really good, ended up sticking with it :D
Internal memory on Omnia is a killer too. After installing all my apps got 5GB left now :S

Seeing that makes me glad I got my Optimus 7 with 16GB, when I got it I was thinking I wouldnt need all that storage, after install a load of apps, I thought again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

Yeah well that's the problem now. I want 16GB and only got 8 =[ though Samsung Omnia 7 is better nearly in every way from hd7. Build quality, loudspeaker quality, performance, screen is better on omnia. Though i miss certain few bits from hd7. Especially 16gb. Still trying to make up my mind which one to keep.

I got the update, but it was pulled by MS. I doubt you'll get another Omnia update until the full version is out in a fortnight or so.

Was just checkin is there a difference between locked to meteor omnias and sim free ones from meteor.

Theres no update on mine. Obviously was removed. Even though some people reported that they still are getting the update notification

I don't know if there is a difference but there is no branding on the Meteor one.
