    Let me fix that :)

Press the back key till you get back to the homescreen :)
Some apps do run in the background :)

If you press the home key it will bring you to the homescreen. After that if you press back button in the homescreen it will bring you back to the app :P So therefore its running in the background ;)
Not really. WP7 uses a process known as 'tombstoning', which is where the app is basically put to sleep in situations such as the one you describe (or when the screen goes off), and then reawakened when it's opened again. It's not using any power while it's asleep.

Yeah that's my understanding of the process as well; if you're running an app such as a stopwatch that supports running under the lockscreen then when you press the power button (ie under lock screen) then although the device appears to be off, the stopwatch is still running. A stopwatch app that does not support running under lockscreen will simply not run once the screen is off.

This is different to pressing the back or home key, which simply "freezes" the app so that returning to it will resume from where it left off. However, the app is not actually running during this time.

If these proposed updates ever show up, you never know, they might change that behaviour!

Theres an update for Zune software.

Most websites reported that a file for mobile update has been updates as well as a few performance tweaks :)

So fingers crossed the update is near :P

Can you change the default keyboard on a Windows phone 7 like you can on Android? i.e. download a new layout

Guess we can welcome Nokia on board to wp7 :)

I am really hoping so. The fact that the head honcho is ex microsoft we can look at it two ways. If he decides not to program a nokia phone with wp7 it will be a real two fingured salute to microsoft and, as someone else put it "the nail in the coffin to wp7", based on the fact that nokia have the market share in europe. The other way he could go would be to try and grab a share of the quarter million daily android activations and go down that route. But it's worth remembering that the reason that nokia pulled symbian.org and the whole "open-ness" of the symbian os was because of the problems of dodgy apps being flung up on the ovi store. Nokia are going to want the cleanness of apple and i think windows phone is the way to go. Are they going to just ignore the competition and keep pushing symbian? I have a brand new E5 here and it's crammed full of features (most of which i don't need). Because i am a truck driver the wp7 is absolutely ideal for me right now because everything i need is there on the live tiles right in front of me. I don't need or want the anarchy of android but i do need stuff to work when i want it to, which is why i have always used nokia in the past.

thats not why it was pulled
the development board of Symbain was failing
    to put it mildly
tho i sympathise with them.. so many problems.. where to start!

Shameless plug but this thread is the place to be for self promotion.

I just wanted to let everyone know that sprout sms v2 will be launching in the next month or two. It now works with multiple accounts (and supports fast switching) and allows you to send an unlimited number of chars (uses more of your webtexts though), the data usage is quite small also.

So in short all you voda guys and meteor gals will be getting your webtext on!

(Low res, phone is much more crisp)

Also the color is whatever color you are using on your phone :)

Does flixster not do this already? If not I will have a look at the fesablity. I really want a marketplace full of Irish based applications. PS new mockup:

And the copy-and-paste update is scheduled for the first two weeks in March. It's the first date Microsoft have set on it, apart from the "Q1 2011" we had before. :)

I'm more concerned with the performance tweaks. Some apps/games can be slow to open, hopefully this will have a positive impact. I'll probably be on my next Windows phone when the second update appears though!!

Today MS made me happy with its keynote in MWC. Finally they made me feel that i didnt make a mistake moving Android to Windows. The coming updates will give basickly implement everything that Apple and Android was working on years. And it will be done better.

Since i own kinect i got exited about Windows Phone and Xbox Kinect Integration :) Also HTML5 IE9 browser on the phone :P

IE9 on PC is great now :) It will be awesome on the phone

There's a rumour running around that this first update has been sitting on MS servers since Christmas, ready to roll out, but the networks were delaying the release.

This does not surprise me, since I wouldn't put it past the likes of AT&T, O2, etc to want to have older devices blocked from updates in order to promote the purchase of newer devices with software updates preinstalled.

Of course, there are no new WP7 handsets out any time soon, put the operators are just setting out their stall in relation to their update policy. Hopefully MS can force their hand to allow updates to roll out. Otherwise it'll be a jailbreak bonanza!

Thats so stupid. No new Windows Phones will come out till the update comes in to support snapdragons better.

I really hope MS will come to a point where they completly take the carrier and update terms out of the equation.

Because WP7 is new, MS relies on the carriers to promote and distribute the platform. Right now, if the Irish operators stopped carrying WP7 there would only be a very small group objecting (a handful of people on this forum it woul seem). I doubt most phone shoppers would even notice. But that will eventually change as WP7 gains traction. For one, more and more people will specifically demand WP7 from their carrier. And by the end of the year, if someone wants a Nokia smartphone, it'll be WP7 Nokia. Once MS have their foot in the door they can tell the carriers to piss off; they can dictate terms and release all the updates they want!

Having watched the multitasking video at Engadget, I'm a little disappointed. I do like the fast task switching and admit it'll be a big improvement but I really want proper background processing, even if it's scheduled.

I want my to be able to run my timer in the background so I can time my cooking and use my phone for other things. I want my RSS app to run in the background and download new feeds every 30 minutes. And mostly, I want to be able to run an IM client in the background. Unless they fix this stuff, I won't be buying a second WP7 phone when my contract runs out which is a pity because I do really like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

I pressume it will be up to the app developers to implement multitasking the way it should be done in apps once MS brings the support. I do feel annoyed too that i have a timer on the phone that mmm doesnt work when the screen goes out lol. So have to use the alarm :) Hope MS will implement a timer that can run properly in the background in the coming updates :)

I guess that once the update comes out it will be crawling all over XDA. And if networks dont stand up to make their customers happy guess will just have to go back to good old flashing and tinkering.

Which would be quite disappointing considering that thats the case with Android right now and why it was wrecking my head that some spotty fella behind a PC on XDA can issue an update that works nearly as good as OEM one in under the time OEM's can issue theirs.

If it comes to the case that some handsets will have updates and some wont. It will be "hi fragmentation to WP7". And eventually will drive off alot of First time WP7 customers back to Android or Apple.

What nokia and microsoft was saying in MWC that carriers wanted a third OS for more choice. So i dont really understand why isnt MS standing above the carriers.

I'm making a lot of assumptions from the video so it's quite likely that I'm wrong but it looks like the apps will be suspended in the background instead of tombstoned. This would allow MS to make it look like proper multitasking but without the cost to the battery (and possible slowdown in response time) that comes with proper background processing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭evolutionqy7

Well we all can write a book on speculating and guessing :) time will tell when more info will be announced and once it comes to end users as an update :)

On another topic: Mac connecting suit for WP7. Think some one was looking for this before :) Not sure is this the beta or the updated version cause got no mac to test :) but maybe useful to some one else :P

So explain why the slacker app didn't pause.

From the video, it sounded like they're adding a background task specifically for playing music and no other purpose.

I'm sure he's using that as an example to demonstrate how that kind of multi tasking works. Looks better than showing some kind of stop watch app :D

But one thing it proves is it can do it.
