Sat 18th Dec, 5.5 mls in 46'40 (8'30) in Hampstead Heath which was covered in snow, 3 or 4 inches deep mostly. Tough to establish any sort of rhythm, the run felt pretty tough but the scenery was stunning, families sledding down the hill, building snowmen and having snowball fights, great spot to run in if a bit hilly. Running could be out for a few days now when the fresh snow inevitably turns to ice, might have to find a treadmill. I couldn't avoid the snow forever i know, amazing i went this long avoiding it.

Weekly Total, 28.75 mls, good start to the week but the snow stopped me in my tracks Friday/Saturday. My dad was over too so spent quite a lot of time in the pub :D, well all the sport was cancelled. Good to steady the ship though.

Yearly Mileage, 1405.25 mls. Given up on 1500 mls now, 2k next year of course.

Mon 20th Dec, 5 mls in 40'02 (8'00) Quite significant snowfall here in London Saturday morning still remained on the footpaths/roads so headed down the busy Camden Road where i reckoned the snow would be somewhat cleared. Mostly slush and quite easy to run through. Went straight through Camden Town and into the stunning Primrose Hill park which was beautifully illuminated (see photo). Loads of kids sledding down the hill at 9pm, i did a lap which involved a steep hill and breathtaking view over the city before heading back. Upped the pace at the end to try to get under 40 mins, just failed, that elusive barrier will have to wait for another day! the big worry of not making it home for xmas continues, my dads flight was cancelled last night and he had to get the ferry. I'm gonna gamble on the xmas eve flight going ahead, i've taken bigger gambles in my time.

Tues 21st Dec, Intervals on treadmill in gym. Got a free days membership online for a savage gym beside the Emirates, i really didnt fancy doing speedwork on the fast melting slush. Didnt go as planned, wanted to do 5 x 1km at 6 min miling with 500m at 9 min miling, after doing 5 x 800m at that pace on the deathmill the day before i left in Dublin and it felt pretty easy. First km in 3'43, 2nd 3'43, 3rd 3'47. Eased off the pace the 3rd one cause it felt unusually tough, a bit like the upper glen road in the race series! Too wrecked to do any more so did half a mile w/d and ended the session. Been quite tired all day and didnt fancy it so i don't mind too much. We all have our off days. Did 25 mins core after to steady the ship somewhat. 3.5 mls total in 25'30. 10 miler stephens day (which may be cancelled) so i was better off easing off i think.

I don't mind from a running aspect, but from a work aspect it is a disaster. I have still 5 students that i am trying to get back to their home countries for christmas, stress is high!! Tomorrow is D-Day, I was meant to knock off for christmas after then but it is not looking likely. Hoping I'll be able to get up to the family at some stage....

Likewise, Shannon seems ok so fingers crossed, don't even want to think of the alternative. I can picture myself on sky news spending xmas day in Bristol Airport. I'll make sure to get a poker game going :pac:

Good news - not a drop of snow in Limerick City - no probs for running here at all!

22nd Dec, 4 mls recovery (felt dead this morning) in 35'11 (8'48). Unspectacular stuff, happy to get it out of the way, 9pm as always . Finished up today for xmas, happy enough with things here so far, this side of the new year was never gonna be that difficult though. London really is a great city and i could get used to this place.

Hope to get a longer run done tomorrow in daylight for a change and do some xmas shopping at long last. No problems forecast for the flight on Friday, not worried about it any more.

Thurs 23rd Dec, 8 mls in 64'20 (8'03) went down to Regents Park, which was icebound and treachorous, ran on the grass as much as possible but still a bit dodgy. Left there earlier than planned and did the rest of the run on the footpaths, which were clear of everything but christmas shoppers. Nice park though and i'll return after the thaw. Off to oxford street now to do the xmas shopping on the busiest shopping day of the year, on possibly the busiest shopping street in Europe, wish me luck!

Heading home tomorrow. Plan to do an easy jog xmas morning then the 10 mile race on boxing day if its on. Happy christmas everyone!

Got home ok Friday after a 2 hr delay in Bristol but still managed 4 pints in the local :D pints are so much better on christmas eve.

Sat 25th Dec, 3 ml jog recovery in 26'45 (8'55) around the locality, winter wonderland out there, zero snow but everything was white with frost. 12 degree drop in temperature from London to Limerick . Legs actually a bit dead from Covent Garden tube stop where my impatience to wait for a lift made me climb the 180 steps to the top, won't be doing that again in a hurry!

    Sun 26th Dec, STEPHENS DAY 10 MILER CAHERDAVIN, LIMERICK;

After a christmas day spent getting totally outplayed by my brothers in poker, and mostly drinking and eating sh*te i jogged down the 200 yards to the start of this. Did half a mile warm up and a few strides and away we went. Plan was to run 67'30 (6'45) as a prep for a pb attempt in the Waterford half and to beat the frank duffy time of 67'38. Headed out first mile 6'24 feeling good, settled into the 6'45 pace then and felt great knocking out these miles, some of them on very hilly sections. Hit cratloe village (5 mls on the garmin in 33'20) then and onto the sixmilebridge road back into Limerick and started to knock out 6'20-6'25 from here on in. Got into a small group taking turns sheltering from the strong crosswind along the dual carriageway. Felt really good around 7-8 mls and pulled ahead of the group, knowing i wouldnt see them again till the finish. A quick calculation said run 12'10 for the last 2 to break 65 mins (all garmin based of course, mile markers were few and far between) which seemed like a bit much. Another 2 6'25's followed to show 65'25 at 10 on the garmin (32'05 for the 5 mile section from cratloe ), with no finish line in sight. I know you gotta add on about .08 to .1 of a mile for the inaccuracy so i figured it was gonna be 65:50 to 66 even or thereabouts. Turned the last corner to cross the line in about 15th in 66'48 for 10.2 miles. Delighted with this time, i'm well ahead of the Frank Duffy run in August, nearly 2 mins :p. Sub 66 was the goal for Mallow (which i cant do now) so great to hit it when i wasnt expecting to, although the recent tempo runs were pointing to an improvement like this. Ok nearly 3 mins off my 63'18 PB, but that was never gonna be challenged today. Had the rubberbandits song in my head the whole way, especially the giddy up now baby bit! Good atmosphere for the tea and biscuits afterwards, caught up with a few running friends, my younger bro won the 6 mile (33 mins), his first race in 3 yrs, first step on the road to much greater things this year hopefully, he's beaten all the u23 gold medal team at some point in the last few years, so fingers crossed for 2011.

I'm quite confident now of beating 1'28'31 in waterford, 1'27 could be broken hopefully, depending on the next 3 weeks.

Week total, 34.25 mls over 6 runs and a season best today. Pretty good week. One alarming thing is that i havent gone further than 10 mls since the DCM. That will have to change fast. Work hasnt seemed to affect my running which was a worry beforehand.

Yearly total, 1439.5mls. getting towards the end now, I wrote a review of the year the other day in work :D and i'll post it soon.

Mon 27th Dec, 3.5mls recovery in 32 mins (9'10) didnt care about the pace after the race, felt crappy enough tbh.

Couldnt get the time to head out today with the races and heading off to Dublin this evening for Leopardstown tomorrow so hope to get out to the Clontarf seafront in the morning beforehand. No harm having a rest day today anyway.

Weds 29th Dec, 5 mls in 42'18 (8'28) on the clontarf seafront. Took it handy, still a bit tired from Stephens Day. Nice to get a run out there on the grass, its the thing i miss most about Dublin and it was all a bit nostalgic tbh. Out to Leopardstown now :D

Hey well done on the 10 mile result thats great running! A little disappointed I didn't get down for but I will do some day hopefully. Decided to leave it to the Waterford half. I say 1:28 definietly within you, you may be cracking that if the vibe is right again horse ;) Are the results online anywhere?

Thurs 30th Dec, 20 mile LSR with the group which included Menoscemo, RK, chinguetti, Ral3, Digger, Mr Slow et al. Took it nice and slow, 3'13'40 (9'41 pace) I was a bit hungover from last night but once i got going i was OK. Meno, RK and myself did the full 20 and the last 2/3 mls were rediculously tough for me, with the legs crying out in pain, i haven't gone past 10 mls in training so this was a big jump. Only 4 days since the 10 mile race so that was expected. Good to get out though, chances for boardsie group runs will be few and far between in the new year. Truly exhausted now though!

That may or may not be it for the year, i'll see how i feel in the morning. I'll post the review of the year here tomorrow either way.

Just by chance I saw this as I was about to text too see if you were back tomorrow as I'm doing 18 in the morning. Working NYD and that Sunday so tomorrow is best bet. You in Limerick for NY's? Will is having some people over, think he said you or your bro was going, could be wrong though.

The country club are going a relay race NYD.

Anyway, I prob won't catch you til 2011 so Happy New Year, have a good one.

I'll do a run with you mon or tues if you want, i'm back home tomorrow, heading back to london weds. Yeah i heard about heading to will's but didnt know which night it was happening. Might take it handy tomorrow and head down to the new years day race.

Odysseus; not sure what my goal is to be honest, just to have a better year than 2010 and start to set some pb's at long last. 1'28 half is the starting point. Emigrating has totally changed my outlook on running but definitely going to keep it up.

No running today, feeling the effects of yesterdays LSR and the countless nights of drinking. Thats it for the year, here's the review i promised.

    Jan – Apr, Rotterdam Misery.

After tailing off in November post DCM, I had a great December and was rearing to go for the new year despite the snow and ice. My P&D 12 week 55 mpw max schedule had me starting on the 4th Jan and off I went. I had all but decided on Rotterdam on Apr 11th at that stage. It was quite tough to maintain the schedule at first, found myself exhausted after the MP runs but got used to it. Quite strange to be running at close to 9 min miling for recovery runs, never went slower than 8 min miling usually in training. Nailed all the crucial sessions in the lead up until I noticed pain in my coccyx (tailbone) while at a Munster rugby match, just 9 days before the big day. Nothing major at first but the next day I was in total agony, and I was out for 6 days, got in a gentle jog on the Thursday before I left and it was all systems go for Rotterdam. All signs pointed to 3’15 but it just didn’t happen on the day. See race report below.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...&postcount=227

Great to meet the boardsies after though. Looking back now it had to be the fitness I lost in those 6 days or maybe I simply don’t travel well. I have yet to run a good race out of Ireland from 4 attempts. (Hyde Park relays '06, Luton marathon '07, Thanksgiving 5k New Mexico '09, Rotterdam Marathon '10)

Apr-June, 8 weeks to Leeside Disaster.

I couldn’t leave it at that, too much effort and time put into it. I had to do another one, after looking at Limerick and some others I settled on Cork in early June. I was going to do a tune up race this time, the Great Limerick run had to be it, the 10k or 9.4k, lol. I did really well in this race with the hometown knowledge finishing 29th out of 3000, my run equated to a sub 40 min 10k, which I was happy with. I was set up now for Cork. Things started ok in Cork but the headwind and driving rain were constant and slowly wore me out, gone at 15 mls and walked/jogged home to a horrible 3’54. I posted some strong stuff at the time on the race and the areas the race runs through and I still stand by it. A horrible race ran through at times horrible areas, especially up by the tunnel. A handful of spectators every mile, little encouragement. One I will never do again that’s for sure but great to meet the boardsies that weekend, even though i didnt consume alcohol with them amazingly. Not ruling out the relay in future, but that’s more for the social aspect tbh. No more mickey mouse marathons for Brianderunner!

    June- August. Back to Life

After Cork finally got a garmin and targeted the race series in the park. Slowly built back up after Cork, starting intervals in early July. First came the 5 miler, where I went off too fast but still ran a solid race to finish in 31’24,

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...6&postcount=15

Just as well it wasn’t a PB cause the short distance would have ruined it. Headed to Barcelona then for the athletics but still got some good runs in over there despite the 30 degrees heat, was flying then for the 3 weeks before the Frank Duffy 10 and ran a fairly solid 67’38, see race report.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...8&postcount=31

The first of my monster Boardsie piss ups followed in Ryans after but woke up with more than just a hangover, a niggly pain in the cuboid of my right foot, wasn’t too bad at first but got progressively worse, until walking became agony. All signs pointed to a stress fracture, the pain slowly subsided and I was back after nearly 2 weeks out, the DCM was now firmly on the agenda, while running the half competitively was a no go.

August-Oct, Avoiding all work, cause there's none available!

The fitness slowly came back and set a target of 3’30 for Dublin, which is fairly slow for me tbh, but very achievable after Rotterdam and Cork. Jogged around to 1’44 in the half as a MP run, felt great at this pace and really good to run a race with zero pressure. 2 weeks before DCM ran the Simon 5 mile in the park, after feeling crap that week, so went off far too slow but still ran a solid 32’57 (RACE REPORT).

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...9&postcount=98

Could have gone up to a minute faster no doubt but no biggie. However, foot was sore in the same spot the next day, Dublin was now in doubt. Fortunately all was well for the big day and what a day it was, see race report.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...&postcount=126

Without doubt the highlight of the year. Although maybe i left a much faster time behind me on the day but had to get the confidence back after Rotterdam and Cork.

    Nov–End of Year, Changes

After DCM I decided I would give this running thing a proper go of it for the next year. If I was gonna be on the dole for the next year so be it but I may as well have some solid pb’s to show for it. Upped the frequency of runs to 6 days a week and noticed an instant improvement. Ran the Boards AC 5k race, good day out it was and a solid 18’47 run.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...&postcount=162

My life was to change the next day when I checked my email inbox. The job offer for Reading turned my world upside down. Ultimately i had to accept, i would have regretted it if i hadn’t. Happily i was moved to the head office in NW5 London. After 2 turbulent weeks involving moving and flat hunting my running finally settled back down to normal the middle of Dec. Settling in well there at the moment and not dreading heading back in the new year which has to be a good thing. I still haven't quite got my head around the idea yet though, best not to think about it too much i suppose.

Ran the local 10 miler on Stephens day and ran a great race, 66'48 for 10.2 miles, which was probably my best run of the year. I've definitely stepped up a level since the DCM. The hometown advantage is clearly worth a lot to me. See race report.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showp...&postcount=223

Waterford Half and Barcelona are on the horizon, 2011 is sure to be an interesting one for me. Roll on an injury free PB laden year.

Miles for the year; 1468 miles, which is a personal best. Highest mileage week was 54 miles. 11 races, 1 pb.

    Happy new year everyone biggrin.gif

New years Day, 5 mls in 40'14 (8'03). Woke up today feeling sick and horrible, the last month finally caught up with me i think. Popped a dose of pills and headed out after much deliberations. Ran past thomond park and into town, in the opposite direction of the munster fans, bad idea. Didnt feel so bad after a mile or 2 but the HR was too high so abandoned plans for a longer run. But happy enough i headed out, it would have been so easy not to. Not the greatest start to 2011.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

Sun 2nd Jan, still sick today but managed to get out for 4 recovery miles in 35'52 (8'58). Feel ok while running, but crappy enough apart from that. Couldnt care less about being sick for the last 3 days off i have but i'll be pissed off if i cant get proper training done the next few days before waterford. Gonna try and get in a tempo tomorrow or tues depending how i feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

Tues 4th Jan, Met ULstudent for a proposed 10 mls with 6/7 mls at tempo pace (6'40-6'45). Took yesterday off to give myself a chance to recover from the sickness i've acquired. Heart rate was too high on the warm up but didnt think too much of it. Away we went, felt ok but something was up. First mile 6'38, 2nd in 6'46, 3rd 6'45, it felt incredibly tough at this point and the HR was 190 , normally 178-180 for tempo's. Did another half a mile in 3'22 to take us up to our old school and called it a day for the tempo miles. Would have done more harm than good to continue, i'm clearly not over the sickness yet. Painful warm down back home and glad to finish. Bit of a blow to my Waterford half chances, PB still on alright but sub 1'27 a bit unrealistic now. Still doing it though. Heading back to London tomorrow evening and might give myself another rest day to recover, no point forcing myself to run when i'm clearly still sick. Total, 7 mls in 55'48 (7'58). Not the worst run in the world on paper i suppose.

I wouldnt worry, you were sick the last few days but you have the fitness in the bag, so if you rest for a few days until you feel grand, get a few easy runs in, I wouldn't say Waterford is out at all at all.

Weds 5th Jan, 5 mls easy/moderate around home and up to shelbourne park and down by the riverbank in 41'47 (8'21) Felt a good bit better today but not 100% yet. I should be ok by tomorrow, just in time for work . Heading to the airport soon, back in 9 days though :D, i've a job to do in the south east now!
