    Covered Earlier.

Using a Diseqc (or pair for PVR) or a Multiswtich.

You can use a 2nd small boxed dish or a larger multifeed dish.

What kind of stuff will they broadcast on this?

The W2A will just show the launch. There is a web feed too.

    I hope it's boring.

The actual Ka-Sat getting launched is for 70Gbps of Internet. Or was when they designed it. Fibre and to a lesser extent LTE rollouts are kind of going to hurt Satellilte by Internet Sales, so they are no doubt hoping Saorsat is the 1st of many niche TV deals. They are now talking about Digital Cinema Projection feeds too (ideal for that).

Taking a break from the launch ...

This month's What Satellite magazine (issue #296, Jan 2011) has 2 articles on Ka-Sat. The first article reports on a visit by a group of journalists to EADS Astrium facilty in Toulouse in Oct during the final stages of testing.

In the article Jean-Francois Fremaux (Eutelsat's Director of Business Development) "says Ka-Sat could potentially play a role in Ireland in boosting broadband take-up and broadcasting channels for the Freesat-style Saorsat service when it launches in spring 2011". The first near official confirmation we've had I believe that Ka-Sat will be satellite to be used by Saorsat.

:D I was going to watch the launch on that feed with my motorised dish setup. But had to settle instead for the online stream and the Fox news like presentation.

I'll check after 7am how separation went.

KA-SAT Third and Fourth Burn Completion
    ILS Launch wrote:
We have confirmed that the Breeze M Upper Stage has successfully completed its 3rd and 4th burns, as well as jettisoning its additional propellant tank. The vehicle is now in a 5-hour coast period, during which we will have nothing to report. The 5th burn is scheduled to start around 1:44 a.m. EST, or 06:44 GMT and burn approximately 6 minutes. Separation of the KA-SAT spacecraft is scheduled to follow the 5th burn completion by about 13 minutes.

@ 9E using Ka-Band, so normal Ku Band LNBF won't work. A perforated or Mesh dish also probably won't work due to higher frequency.

RTE NL is using Ka-Sat because it means for first time ever in Europe it's possible for a small country to have FTA satellite with only Terrestrial like overspill. Explained: http://www.techtir.ie/saortv/saorsat-coverage. (Cards and Encryption is very very expensive and also has other issues of flexibility, privacy, 3rd part control)

    KA-SAT Mission Success

Posted by ILS Communications Team, 2:10 a.m. EST on 27 December 2010
    (more at link)
We have had a successful mission with the ILS Proton Breeze M rocket, carrying the KA-SAT satellite built by EADS Astrium. We have had confirmation that the satellite separated from the vehicle on schedule at 2:03 a.m. EST, or 07:03 UTC.

Everything occurred as planned with ignition, shutdown and separation of the Proton’s first three stages. Then the Breeze M upper stage with the satellite continued the mission, igniting five times, and then releasing the satellite into transfer orbit.

Now it will take 12 weeks to 15 weeks to commission the Ka-Sat. April will be soon enough to get an LNBF.

    DTT reception on saorview Requirements

-)An arial cabable of recieving digital signal (uhf aerial will work)
    Questions
When will it be launched on a fullscale for all ireland use?
When will we know where the coverage blackspot will we know and when we will need saorsat.

    Satellite reception Saorsat
-) a Kuband lnbf and dish suitable for kuband reception
-) A hd satellite recieverfir above
    -? A hd tv

It's a bit premature to be writing the shopping list as it's a large, complex satellite and it'll be a while before we know if it's operational or not. But at a minimum you'd also need a Ka-band LNBF and a Diseqc switch if you want both Saorsat (Ka @ 9E) and Freesat (Ku @ 28E).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Mr McBoatface

@ homewardbound11 - Saorview the Irish DTT service (received via a UHF Aerial) is up and running since October, more channels and a switch to HD for RTE1 and TV3 to come later this year, RTE2 is currently broadcasting at HD resolution. Most people nationwide can get currently receive this service and will have absolutely no need for Saorsat. Saorsat is a backup service and for those who can't get DTT.

In general If you can currently receive TV3/TG4 you will get Saorview, you will need a MPEG4 HD receiver. There is lots of info in the Terrestrial forum so it would be best to look for further information there - http://boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=56

    +1 vote on that!

April is soon enough. You don't want a Picnic or Neotion CAM scenario!
One potential client for the satellite is the Irish government, which has been considering the use of KA-SAT as a Freesat-style service that would fill in for blackspots in Ireland’s DTT footprint. The satellite will be stationed at Eutelsat’s 9 degrees East location, where Eurobird 9A has become a distribution hub for clients including Arqiva, RR Sat and Globecast. Hungarian DTH platform Hello HD also uses 9 degrees East as does Eutelsat’s own Kabelkiosk.

Frank McKenna, president of ILS said, “We worked very closely with Eutelsat and Astrium to ensure the successful launch of the KA-SAT satellite on ILS Proton. We are honored to play an important role in the deployment of innovative programs and technologies such as KA-SAT, the first European satellite that will operate exclusively in high capacity Ka-band frequencies.”

(The article claims it's first Ka in Europe, they mean "exclusive" as the Hotbird 6 and Hylas1 both have Ku and Ka.)

Ground-breaking High Throughput Satellite with record 70 Gbps capacity to serve users across Europe and Mediterranean Basin

    Paris, 27 December 2010

The KA-SAT satellite of Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) has been successfully lofted into orbit by a Proton Breeze M rocket supplied by ILS. Lift-off of Eutelsat’s 6.1 tonne satellite took place on 26 December at 21.51 GMT (22.51 CET). After a 9-hour 12-minute flight, the launcher released KA-SAT into geosynchronous transfer orbit. Acquisition of the satellite’s telemetry signal by Eutelsat’s control centre at the Rambouillet teleport, and the partial deployment of the solar arrays have already been successfully completed.

Seems that Commercial Service will not be to end of May. A month later than thought.

    Web link http://www.eutelsat.com/news/compress/en/2010/html/PR5910-KA-SAT-SUCCESS/PR5910-KA-SAT-SUCCESS.html
The deployment of the KA-SAT programme, both in space and on the ground, will be pursued with three key phases prior to full entry into commercial service. The first phase comprises circularising the satellite’s orbit, with four firings of the apogee motor over the coming seven days. Once the satellite is on station at 9° East, it will undergo a series of in-orbit tests. This will be followed by the final phase of integrated validation of the satellite and ground stations before commercial entry into service, which is planned for end May 2011.

Watty, apologies if this has been asked before, but when Saorsat is up and running, will it be possible to have one dish and one lnb connected to a Humax Foxsat PVR and be able to receive and record Saorsat and Freesat ? Also, will Saorsat channels appear on the same Epg as Freesat ? I have my doubts, because currently if a channel doesn't pay for an epg slot, it doesn't show up on the Freesat epg. So will we talking about a free to air satellite system to catch Saorsat and Freesat on the one one box, but with the major drawback of only a now and next epg ?

As I'm online at the moment, I'll jump in and answer this to best of my ability Galtee Boy. At least this is my interpretation of the situation, 'Freesat' is a UK based service, 'Saorsat' is/will be an ROI based service. I assume therefor they'll each have their own mutally exclusive EPG's.
