Seriously, can people not just scan quickly over stuff which doesn't appeal to them?

I find it works very well for me.

I've often said it elsewhere on Boards ... what this world needs is far less tolerance for the big stuff like corruption and inequity and hunger and greed, and far more tolerance for the day-to-day stuff which niggles us about our friends and neighbours.

And I'm broadcasting that thought out to all of you, not just in One Direction! *

*Included specially for Soccy and Deise

Secondly, I taught after I did the 2 month ban. The would have changed but they didn't. It got worse, the IRC is still destroying this forum. The Jizzlers are a bit of fun but they don't have any meaning because all nominations are generally based on groups that have formed in the IRC.

TBH, if I had my way I would close this forum and replace it with the IRC because this forum has been destroyed.

I don't get this view that IRC is some sort of despicable black hole sucking the life out of C&H; I haven't used it in months, and I know I'm not the only one and I don't think it's affected my enjoyment of C&H. Obviously your opinion is your opinion, but your opinion seems to be that you don't actually like C&H very much anymore...

This is the answer for so many of the complaints that have come up in this thread.

I think getting the blame is fairly awesome.

We struggle to get even 5 or 6 people talking most nights, sometimes an entire night's conversation fits on one screen on my laptop, and we're apparently responsible for all the problems of a forum with over 100,000 posts.

Clearly I'm much more powerful and awe-inspiring than I thought.

Sorry guys, I am completely at fault for all that Mersenne Prime number rabble in the Jizzlers thread, where it doesn't belong. I'm really sorry, I didn't really know I was doing it (Maths excites me :P).

I promise I won't do it in future - I can see how it would annoy other users.

    Also, happy birthday C+H!

For a bunch of people who talk on an Internet forum, boy do we have a lot of drama. It's not like we're family and have to talk to each other. We choose to be here, nobody is forcing anyone to post, so we either need to learn to be grown ups and accept each other for whatever we like be it maths, x factor or whatever. If that's a problem and someone doesn't like someone, put them on your hide list thing or just don't read their posts, and of someone just doesn't like C&H just don't post. Simples.

As a former op of IRC, I had somebody who doesn't use IRC nominated in every category but two, and those too definitely deserved those nominations. :)

The IRC seems to be only inhabited these days by Pygmalion and Davidius, who, when I stumble in at unearthly hours of the morning, try to hide the fact that they've been flirting outrageously for hours.

And meh, the maths posts were 3 posts from 1 thread, just skip the ones you don't care about and carry on! Applies to everything really, like when Soccy and Deise swoon over One Direction you can't tell them to go make a One Direction thread to keep away from the rest of us*

*they're totally going to do that now aren't they...-_-

If you'd like another ban please indicate so, it's quite apparent from many of your posts you don't like this forum or how it works, I can understand it's not for everyone, but it is for a lot of people who pass through here.So please refrain from nay-saying a rather successful/active social forum when it seems you come here mainly to complain about the place

As Pygmalion has said [and I've seen first hand] the IRC barely functions any more and rarely has more then 6-7 members in it.So the blame can't rest on that, unless you assume these members have a lot more sway than they do

As for the rest of you, this is just a general observation of mine;the main problem I can see in C&H is looking for a problem in C&H.This place has changed,it's grown and evolved like everything does. Some of you may not like the direction it has taken, but as a whole this place is great apart from the tone of drama seeking that has come up lately in the user base.

So the rewards ceremony this year is over, and while it's been fun and all, there some disturbing trends I've noticed in the results.

There's been a high proportion of winners from a cliquey, elitist IRC channel that has been for quite a while eroding our forum.
Quite a few of the winners are regulars over there and essentially every winner has been there at least once.

While it may be tempting to just sweep all of this under the rug, Oh but you are a nerd, Aoibheann is nice, Davidius is funny, deise_girl is young, I think it's plain as day that the members of this IRC channel have formed together to rig (either outright or through clever voting practices) this ceremony.

I believe this is just part of a larger plot to bring down not just this forum, but boards.ie itself. I can confirm that this is indeed the goal of these guys, under their heartless ruler Davidius.

As further evidence I invite you to look over the list of winners and see how several of them visit the IRC channel, I believe that's evidence enough for their malicious intent.

I missed the awards this year due to Internet connection problems.
Having looked back over the threads, I'm actually not in the least disappointed.

We used to make a point of giving people with an interest in X-Factor a place to talk about it without making everyone else have to put up with it. The Jizzlers, however, were riddled with stupid references. Even the nomination polls had options to vote for people from that show. The fact that over-exposed TV character took votes away from actual C&H contributors in some categories got to me (probably more than it should have, but still).

I just couldn't take any of it seriously. Sorry guys and gals, but this is the first time, ever, in over two years using this forum, that I have been disappointed by C&H in general and not just by individuals or little groups.

That said, I've still updated the C&H Biki page with links for anyone who's interested.

IO, I think it was just a bit of fun. X Factor references don't actually take away from people's contributions, they are just added for a laugh. Sure having deise and soccy without One Direction, is a bit like having bread without butter, or a life without oxygen! They go one on one! I don't particularly like One Direction, but their inclusion in the Jizzlers (and indeed in other aspects of C+H) doesn't actually take away from the value of anything.

It's akin to constantly renaming the Den - it's harmless fun! I haven't seen last year's Jizzlers awards but from judging on this year's, I think they were a great success and couldn't really have gone any better! Deise, soccy, Noel, slow_show, the mods and everybody else working in the background did an excellent job! I know you weren't 'there' because of a bad internet connection, but I was there the whole time and it was extremely fun!

Just my opinion though, I'm not arguing against IO personally or anything and I don't intend to be rude.

Tim said every single thing I wanted to say! :) It was just a bit of fun Insect, it's not as if they won any of the threads bar best couple, and to be fair Deisemonster came second in that too, and it just shows that people do know of their love for 1dir. After all the hard work Deise put into the awards of her free time, I really don't think it's fair to criticize all of her work so harshly..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,014 ✭✭✭Colm!

I'm also with Tim and Noel. The 1D\X Factor references were naturally to be expected when we chose Desiemonster to host. Yeah, it's not something that everyone wanted but that was their hosting style.
It's not like 1D even won an award. Hell, they didn't even win the 1D award.

I'm someone who outright HATES the X-Factor, and I didn't mind the references in the Jizzlers. Desiemonster's hosting style would naturally be different to Bob's. Whoever will follow up next year will be different again.

I'm just saying, this is my opinion, yours is yours. I missed a lot of the Jizzlers myself as well but reading back over the threads I don't share your opinion.

That's exactly what it is, a bit of craic, you're not meant to take it seriously. It was a bit of a laugh. With all due respect Mr. IO, I'm a little disappointed in you tbh man, that you couldn't see it for what it is - harmless fun. :-/

I'm just thanking everything but yeah, I totally agree it was just a bit of fun. I'm one of those 'I think X Factor's a bit of a joke but I watch it anyway' types, so I might be a tad biased but I didn't think it detracted from it at all. Also, in fairness, if someone like Pygmalion hosted you'd expect a bit of maths talk, which would be fine and wouldn't bother me in the slightest, despite not really being a huge maths fan, so a bit of X Factor talk was expected tbh.

Obviously I'm not speaking for everyone and it's just my own opinion but yeah, I thought it all went well and it was actually quite entertaining. Well done deise_girl for all the work she put into it, don't think I've actually said that yet. :pac:

Ha! Pyggy isn't even a maths student.. ._.

But to address what you've said there - I think what the difference is that there were names from the band added to different polls and they technically did alter the votes. There's no problem with making references to the band or stuff like that, but I'm sure if I were to throw Euler, Maxwell, Einstein, Newton, Spivak etc into the polls if I were the host that it might not go down so well. Sure those that do maths would have a laugh - but then would I be accused of only catering to the "clique"? I think I'd have pissed off a lot of people if I'd made a load of maths references and inclusions to the poll tbh.

Honestly, the additions to the polls didn't particularly bother me - I took them as the joke that they were and voted for the people who I'd planned to vote for anyway. But I can see IO's point. I can also see the other side in that it's only a laugh and everyone's hosting style will be different. But it's a joke that some people just aren't interested in, and maybe there was just that few too many One Direction references?

In fairness, Maxwell would totally have won Best beard. :pac:

    full-Maxwell.jpg

^ Not even soccy can compete with that.

Anyway, I can sort of see where IO is coming from. The number of One Direction references would have been a bit grating to someone who wasn't interested in X-Factor or anything.

But no-one complained about it at the time. And we chose deise_girl as host, and with deise_girl you know what you're going to get. Maybe her style wouldn't have suited everyone, but she put a lot of work into this and I don't want to see her being criticised for it. As for the inclusion in the polls, I honestly don't think it made a blind bit of difference tbh. Wagner was ALWAYS going to win Best One Directioner! :D And any of the other polls, people would still have voted for whoever they wanted to win. At the end of the day, what's the difference between a "Harry Styles" option and the classic "Atari Jaguar" option?

The way I see it: deisemonster constantly have the piss taken out of them for their One Direction obsession. Including it in the Jizzlers was a way for them to go along with the joke and poke fun at themselves too. I don't think it did any harm. The whole concept of the Jizzlers is based around harmless fun. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have the "Poster You'd Least Like to be Stuck in a Lift/Life with" or "Nerdiest poster" awards, for fear of offending people.

Seriously IO, there was a shítload of internet drama in this forum a couple of months ago, with allegations of cliques, flamebaiting and people being excluded flying around the place. And this is what disappointed you. Really?

I'd agree with Aoibheann and Knife-Wrench... I didnt really have any problem with all of the X-Factor references but I can see how somebody might get irritated by them. All in all I thought the Jizzlers went really well even though I didnt vote in many categories myself.
