Very interesting links and discussion. On this, I'd been reading a bit in Noakes book, 'The Lore of Running' regarding pre-race fuelling.

Obviously, it's sensible to increase Carb intake from a few days out to race day and the protein/fat intake is reduced accordingly so as not to increase overall calorie intake.

Noakes refer's to keeping the diet simple in the 24 hours before he event so as to minimise the content of your intestines by eating foods that are easily absorbed through he gut wall.
If I remember correctly, he suggested eating refined (?) carbs, such as white bread, cookies, etc as these items are of this variety.*
I appreciate that we are all unique and we can each tollerate foods differently but does anyone have any experience or recommendations on this?
What do you eat during the last 24 hours, assuming that you will pass everything eaten in the preiod prior to this?
*just glossed over this section from memory, so could be subject to correction

I'm not familiar with Noake but loads of pasta with tomato sauce the night before followed by some more on the morning of a race has done right by me. Not the tastiest though.

Cheers Kaymin, I tried pasta before and found I tend to eat way more than I should.
More recently, I've been eating boiled white rice with lashings of salt and plenty of water to wash down. It's not the most pleasant but at least the taste stops you over eating!
I'll also have jam on toast too, along with the odd bagel.

Hows the leg? Still gonna give it a lash on Monday?

Yeah still going to give it a lash on Monday. Leg is much improved but running will be the real test. And I don't want to put it to the test again for fear of setting myself back. Will be setting out with the sub-3 pacers and will hang on as long as I can. I don't have much confidence about breaking 3 hours - big fear is that my leg muscles cramp up as a result of not being exercised for the past 4 weeks. I should still have the endurance though.

Have you decided on your race strategy / target pace?

Great to hear, I've no doubt that you'll get through it alright.;)

My race strategy - have dwelt long and hard on this one:rolleyes:
My plan is to start with the 3 hour pace group but run at 7:05/mile pace.
I intend to keep the pacer baloons in sight for the first 5 or 6 miles, but I will be disciplined and let them float further into the distrance as the morning progresses.
I've my pace band printed out to 3:06 and hopefully I will maintain this pace throughout.
IF I have anything left after 22 miles, I'll slowly attack the clock.
Looking forward to meeting you, d'pop and misty at the 3 hour pacers.

Just popped in to wish you guys the very best of luck for Monday.

You have done the hard training now it's time to go do the hard work on Monday.

When you feel you can't go on any longer or keep up you pace remember all those times in training when you felt similiarily but yet still toughed it out.

I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines a little envious that I am not out there with you.

    Go get your PB's guys.

I see your doing the rounds seany, me too :D Best of luck all. Hope to catch yee at the start and I hope you reach your goals.

Elfoyzer, I keep changing my mind on race plan as this cold is getting hard to shake off. Either way I'll be at the start at the sub 3 pacer group in the Donore singlet (white with a black band on the chest), no 2138. Speedy will be in a white singlet with red band (as he put it, shiny head) and Seany....you gotta make yourself seen.

    Have a great day.

PS thats me on the left after last years DCM (the take away from this image is DON'T GO OUT TOO FAST!!....I'm sure the chap beside me did the same) :D

I paced the second half of the marathon - 3:15. Was originally supposed to pace the 1:40 half. Felt a fraud receiving applause when I'd began running only at the half way point!

    Ibuprofen are packed!

    Good luck to all tomorrow.

Hey Kaymin, you look very familier. Did you ever do a speed session on the track at Donore?

Hey Kaymin, you look very familier. Did you ever do a speed session on the track at Donore?

Yeah, did a speed session at Donore one baltic evening last winter - 10 x 900m if I remember right - although I could manage only 9! I think I was talking to you. Had intended joining in an effort to try break 60 at Ballycotton. Didn't join due to injury - didn't get close to breaking 60 either. Once I'm recovered fully from my current injury I intend joining up and give sub-60 at Ballycotton a good go.

Best of luck folks - may the marathon gods be on your side, and that you all get what you deserve.

That feeling of running towards the line and seeing 2:5X:XX on the clock is truly magical. No matter how hard it gets up behind UCD or coming along Merrion Road, just picture that clock in your mind!

Look forward to hearing the great results.

Ahh.. That's right. I had forgotten your username so didn't realize it was you I ran with in Limerick for a spell. Met you briefly at the 10 mile too, when I was running with ecoli. Best of luck on Monday. Hope the leg holds out.

Best of luck to the rest of you too. Hope you have a great race and hit your respective goals.

I should be in the pub instead of on the internet but the only thing I could think of when I finished was getting my leg elevated and wrapped in ice.

Here's a summary of my race:

Started a bit back from the 3 hour pacers so I slowly worked my way upto them by the 6 mile mark. Didn't feel comfortable - legs were heavy and not fluid like they should be at 6:45 pace. Very concerning at such an early stage.

Kept with the pacers upto mile 9 but my leg muscles and joints started aching - I knew then that sub-3 was out. Went through halfway in 1:30 but felt really tired and sluggish.

Focused on running within myself but my pace got slower and slower. Runners streamed past me - this didn't bother me - my priority at this stage was to finish. Pace drifted between 7:30 to 8 mins or slightly above per mile from here to the finish.

Injured leg was a little sore from the start but gradually got worse as time passed. The pain was probably masked somewhat by all my other aches - I feel it now though.

Eventually collapsed across the line in about 3:14:30 - happy to get under 3:15. Couldn't have gone any better on the day. I was just glad to finish. The absence of running for the past 4 weeks and the on-off training for the month of September certainly showed.

I don't want to repeat todays experience - if I'm not right for a marathon in future then I'll be calling off my attempt. Thanks to the masseurs etc at the end who made some of the pain go away!

Where to from here? Didn't break 3 hours so I'll be back to achieve that target - not any time soon though. Plan is to take two months off running to heal and then start training in January for Ballycotton 10. I'll figure out the next marathon to target around then aswell.

Ecoli - many thanks for your training programme and advice - I improved leaps and bounds during the first 10 weeks of the programme that I followed.

Elfoyzer / Dono - I hope your races went well today. Apologies for not being around for a beer after the race.

Misty - it was good to bump into you on the course - hopefully you achieved your target - likewise everyone else on boards targetting sub-3 today.
