I was hoping someone here could help me with a question i have.

I filled out an overseas enquiry for on the BA's website and got an e-mail back informing me of some available positions in the BA. It does say that an applicant has to have accomadation in the UK as one of the conditions. Does this include applicants from Ireland though?

Hey I had the same question when I started my application. I got onto the recruiters office and was told that rule does not apply to applicants from the republic. Good luck with your application!

PS thanks for that info paddycam. Did you apply through Portadown or eniskillen?

Yeah just apply as a regular applicant. The English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish applicats have the same entry form - on the form, just tick which one of the 5 apply to you.

I was going to aplly as a regular applicant but on the BA website it says you need an address in the UK to do this. I think not having a postcode could be a problem as well.

Doesn't apply to applicants living in the Republic of Ireland. Give the recruiting office in Portadown or Eniskillen a call and they'll send the application forms to your home address.

I was'nt aware of this. I thought i'd have to fill out an overseas application. I guess i'll give the recruiting offices a ring instead and have them sent out. instead.

Also one last question. When i was going through the overseas enquiry process it said applicants outside the UK need a sponsor living in the UK.

Are applicants from ROI exempt from this as well?

Yes, applicants from the republic apply exactly as applicants from the UK. There's a box to tick on the first page which has England Scotland Wales Northern Ireland and Irish Republic.

Just ring a damn recruitment office (Belfast or Portadown) and let them get it moving.

what are the options you can go for in the army ?

    infantry
    engineers

    what else ?

if you apply for them, do you go straight into them after training ?

I have an ordinary degree in IT, which is being horribly wasted here in Ireland.... also what are the security clearance requirements for the like of IT or comms ?

    1) go to armyjobs.mod.uk
    2) take a look at the sigs jobs

Most of them are open to Irish applicants. Very few enlisted jobs require UK citizenship - ROI'ers are fine for most posts it seems

I had a signals job as my first choice (installation tech) but had to change it as my recruiter said the Royal Signals still aren't open to Irish applicants for some reason.. I've changed to CIS specialist with the Engineers, looks very interesting!

At the end of the day, if you decided to join, it would be for yourself and your own reasons, nothing to do with the queen.

Well done to all you Irish lads joining the armed forces. Just like your forefathers who fought together with English/Scottish people during WW1 and died together. I see no shame in Irish lads joining the BA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭Lorelei

    Amcalster ?

Although I can't understand why anyone should wish to join the Penguins (RAF - all flap no fly) I think you will find that Irish citizens can join all parts of the British Force (RN. Army, RM and RAF) suggest you contact the RAF recruiting office in Belfast I imagine they still have one if not the get in touch with their recruiting direct.

I was browsing through the British military sites and the RAF and Royal Navy say you need at least 3 years residency in the UK to join up. Does that apply to Irish people as well?

Seems strange as so many Irish people serve with the British, if you need residency before joining up.

At the end of the day lads a soldier, is a soldier, is a soldier, no matter who your fighting for, your fighting to survive.

Yea they're pretty similar, just the signals is more based around the installation of communications. You going to apply then?
