Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    First it was to be a ferry and now it`s to be an airport. Still, when you thing of it, other countries are dotted with regional airports so why not Ireland. Ryanair started out from a small airport/airstrip in Waterford. We should welcome this venture and hope it becomes a reality. I know there is now a reasonably good means of getting to Dublin airport which had to be dragged screaming from our national transport provider only after local and private bus companies saw an opening in the market for same,but then it is still a two hour journey. So best of luck to this venture.

    its not as unfeasable as it sounds.

    Ryanair would up sticks tomorrow if they had an alternative to Dublin airport.
    This could be the alternative.
    80km from Arklow to Dublin is near for Ryanair standards.
    i.e. "Frankfurt" Hahn is 125km from Frankfurt. "Munich West" Memmingen is 115 km from Munich

    Of course that would mean Terminal 1 in Dublin probably being then abandoned if Ryanair moved seeing as they will be the only major user of terminal 1 once the new terminal opens.

    We already are! They may be small but in the context of a state with 4.3 million people they are regional.

    Misinformed methinks.Ryanair won't be the only major user of T1.There are many other airlines that will remain ther, including some Aer Lingus flights.

    Ryanair wouldn't move from Dublin.The charges there are very low compared to other airports from which they opererate..

    There is still extra capacity in Dublin Airport.We shouldn't be thinking of wasting money for another one to lie underused.

    Well fair play to them, they even consider the public transport aspect with the Rosslare to Dublin train in mind, so it probably will be the first Airport that should have easy rail access to any city within this country.

    Why not both and have a Cargo hub to Europe, plus it will be easy access for Fuel depot to the Airport as similar to the Terminal at Shannon Airport. where the soviets used to bring in fuel for their transatlantic flights on the Shannon Stopover.

    It would be great if it ever happens .

    Unfortunately there have been a few big projects announced for Arklow over the years with politicians getting their faces in the paper but nothing happens .

    The has been announced just after last week plans were put forward for a terminal 3 at Dublin Airport.

    I thought this project was announced for Athlone, not Arklow, for a major new city and airport.

    Could it be the 'investors' mis-identified the best place.

    It is not just an April Fools joke taken too seriously by those normally taken in by misinformation and online scams.

    It has taken thirty years to get as far as a decade away for a rail connection to Collins Town Dublin Airport.

    Its the talk of the local farming area and 10 have signed up,so there is something to it

    T3 at DUB takes crowding out of T1 and T2 but doesnt increase capacity unless night flights are extended

    A green field site is total new capacity

    Be interesting to see where it goes,it does seem to be funded better than the 2010 plan

    You are right - it is talk.

    Has any money been paid to these farmers in Wicklow who will sell their farms? Was it paid in bit-coin?

    When the money is paid over to the farmers, I might begin to believe it - particularly if Michael O'Leary is behind it.

    Still smells like an April fools joke, or a scam.

    Non refundable deposits are a minimum requirement in these things but so too are NDA's,so we'll have to see

    Very strange proposal. We already have more airports than we need for the population of this country. Both Wexford Bus and Bus Éireann have hourly buses from Arklow to the airport so it's not exactly like the area is crying out for an airport..

    They had an information evening nearby for many landowners also. It is no April fools, and hard to see how they scam landowners given that from their POV it will be a straightforward sale

    I'd imagine the plan is for new incoming capacity that DUB cant handle

    A new terminal at DUB only reduces over crowding,it doesnt increase capacity

    Incoming is also outgoing obviously

    Its also going to poach traffic from DUB if its 40% cheaper

    No one has mentioned the environmental aspect yet, but the chances of a large new airport getting through the Irish planning process in this day and age are nonexistent. Even with the government's blessing (rather than it being just a speculative private venture), I don't see how it could get planning permission.

    Given we are all forking it through the nose for carbon taxes, because reduce CO2, you know, this is not allowable in that context from the amount of concrete required, it being the third highest global emmission source of CO2.

    Ok but besides the artificial cap placed on passenger numbers that the DAA are trying to amend, Dublin Airport has significant scope to increase capacity through infrastructure improvements. The new runway is not even 2 years old.

    I take your point about low-cost but If another airport was ever needed, would Baldonnel not make more sense? It could share it with the AirCorps.

    Omg what a load of BS. They can't build a hotel in Wicklow without residents groups being up in arms. Good luck with an airport.

    Cork, Shannon, Belfast, Knock, Kerry, Derry/LondonDerry, Donegal?.... Potential to increase capacity at Dublin airport on top of that. Isn't there even an old airport in Waterford?

    The difference is none of those airports are that close to Dublin except Belfast, which is in another jurisdiction.

    A new airport close to Dublin but with it's own airspace and with good transport links to Dublin could compete with Dublin airport for traffic, and therefore bring costs down.

    DAA have a monopoly right now, this plan would challenge that
