I didn't bash your suggestion of snatcher, just said that making it more action orientated would be a mistake.

It's a discussion forum, I was discussing peoples Top 10's. The OP asked for opinions on his one, I gave one. Feel free to lay into my top 10 if you want. I'd actually look forward to that.

I was actually surprised that I enjoyed the Perfect Dark remake a lot more and it was down to one thing, the framerate again. I was surprised how fast the game actually is, it zips along, while just like goldeneye on the N64 it's running in slow motion.

Not really contradicting myself. You keep trying to hammer it home that I said goldeneye was a bad game because it looks like crap when I said nothing of the sort. I only responded that it looks like crap after you said that I had said it looked like crap and was a crap game for it. I had said nothiong of the sort and hadn't even said it looked terrible. The only thing close to it was to say that the FPS were terrible which nobody sane can disagree with. And well it kind of does look ****:

    goldeneye1oz7.jpg

That's without the blur and low res of the N64. I'm definitely not a graphics whore, here's a screenshot of what I consider one of the best games ever:

    robotron.png

I know the thread is entitled your best games ever, I just think people need to take of the rose tinted glasses and see that some of these games haven't really aged very well at all.

I haven't read anything after this post. Rose tinted glasse you say! I can see were you are coming from and I do agree to some extent, but seriously, rose tinted glasses? Your username doesn't do you justice. Okay, some games have aged really well, Goldeneye isn't one of them but for me it was one of the best games I have ever played. Why should that not get in to MY top ten?

And yes it is a discussion but there is no need to slate another persons opinion just because it differs from your own. And don't come back and say you didn't and it was all in the spirit of discussion becasuse you and I know it wasn't.

BTW the Hitler/Coldplay thing was a Super Hans quote from Peep Show. More people need to watch that show.

I got the reference Super Hans = :)

Thats all I was trying to say man, it came across that because its weak nowadays, that you meant THATS why you have a prob with it...at least your ackowledging its lineage, and as a fellow retro gamer...thats all I ask :)

Coldplay? Im more of a Guns N Roses man....but Hitler on the other hand...:p

And I reckon you're just throwing a match on a padding pool of petrol with that statement!
Goldeneye was an amazing game, but in retrospect it was slow and choppy, that said if only Ninty and MS could get their sh1t together we could see a similar conversion as Perfect Dark got on XBLA, Goldeneye with a silky smooth 60 frames a second frame rate, nice!

And sorry, Final Fantasy VII only looked deep and meaningful because you were a teenager when you played it, Chronotrigger was a far far better game, and since then there has been countless great RPGs that well out stripped FF7, Fable, KOTOR, Zelda Oot/MM/WW/TP and so on.

    I HATE RANDOM BATTLES!

Me agreeing with Ciderman and about a first person shooter as well no less.... What has the world come to. The 60 FPS on the Perfect Dark remake make it feel like a different and much better game.

No-one is saying that Goldeneye isn't a classic, just that it hasn't aged fantastically. Think I sit between yourself and Retr0 on this one - I still play it from time to time, and really enjoy it still in a nostalgic sense, but I can't deny that it doesn't play as smooth as my memory recalls. Still love it and Perfect Dark though! Reckon it's worth putting this argument to bed, don't think anyone is gonna change their opinions!

Oh man, Dark Forces! Now there's a classic first person shooter. Really loved that game and going back to it now the level design is absolutely top notch.

Bioshock and Fallout 3. The amount of music those two games have introduced me to. Oblivion is also very good.

I have the original DOS version of it, not that hot I have to say, and the later additions to the series weren't all that hot either I have to say.
And yes, here the visuals really have dated.

Star Wars and FPS only really came together with Star Wars:Republic Commando, a game I have been mentioning a lot lately and, it seems, only I have played.

Quake II was very good alright, but it was still as sophisticated as a big dumb gun, nothing wrong with that but there was no, finesse.
Goldeneye had that, once you got over the frame rate, and in it's day it had everything, levels that you could complete in your own fashion, difficulty settings that fundamentally changed the level and how you got through it, instead of the industry standard of making enemies better bullet sponges and your bullets more ineffectual when upping the difficulty level.
I suppose playing Goldeneye on an N64 emu on the PC might alleviate those framerate issues, must investigate further.

And Quake 2 is a fave of mine too, but I know it's limitations, more Serious Sam than System Shock 2.
As FPS goes, they have reached their pinnacle in Half Life 2 and the Metroid Prime series.

I am playing Metro 2033 at the mo on the 360 and that's shaping up to be something special I have to say.

Hmm, I still think Dark Forces has aged quite well. It was also one of the first FPS games to have mission based level structure which usually Goldeney gets credited for despite FPS games having it 5 years or so before hand. I'll admit the visuals on dark forces aren't that good anymore but I think the unique level structure and design makes it stand out still to this day.

I liked Quake 2 when it came out but go back to it now and it really isn't very good. Half Life came a long shortly after it and made an absolute mockery of it and every other FPS game before it. It's also one of the ugliest games ever made. They went way over the top with fancy coloured lighting and it just looks awful and garish.

I liked Jedi Knight when it came out but I'm guessing it won't be so hot if I went back to it. Jedi Knight 2 has a lot of fans but I felt it was like all the rest of Ravens output, vapid and hollow and a bit boring.

I played a good bit of Republic Commando, it's a decent game but nothing special. It's basically Rainbow 6 lite with a star wars skin.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I could pick 10 specific games that I believe to be the best ever. Instead I'll just pick a list a few that I could keep coming back to and still enjoy in the same way as when I first played them! No particular order here.
    Super Mario 64
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
    Banjo-Kazooie
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Resident Evil 4
    Kirby's Fun Pak
    Lylatwars
    Super Metroid
    F-Zero GX
    Pokémon (any of them!)
    Chrono Trigger
    Lemmings

I think that's a good cross-section of the games I've enjoyed. There are a lot of related games that I also love, but these stand out for me.

Also, I'd like to chime in on that Goldeneye discussion that was going on earlier. It's definitely a very well made game with lots of great ideas and innovations, and so is its sequel. But the frame-rate occasionally makes those games so, so very painful to play. The thrill of the game is mostly based on your reactions, and if the hardware limits your ability to react... well, it just isn't fun any more! The XBLA port of Perfect Dark proved that it's a fantastic game when it's running properly, and I'm sure Goldeneye would hold up just as well if given the same treatment.

Ah Goldeneye, nailing the guard with the AK before he hits the alarm, then tagging the fella's on the towers atop the dam with a sniper rifle, so good, so so good.

Big shout also goes out to 3D Starstrike and 3D Deathchase on the ZX Spectrum, very very good stuff.

I also think HL2 is completely over rated like the way GTA4 is, I dont think its a patch on HL1.

I went back and replayed both about 4 months ago. I thought the same as you but Half-Life 2 just plays a lot better despite not having the variety of set pieces.

Never liked Jedi Knight 2 or the games that followed just like all the rest of Ravens output which I feel is so over rated. They make a game using the latest ID tech and people go wild for it because it looks pretty when the game underneath is mediocre. I did enjoy Hexen a lot but it's the only game of theirs I'd rate.

Was reading the new gamesTM yesterday and came across a 'top 10 multiplayer games' list. It calls goldeneye a 'mess' to play today, though I doubt Retr0 will be pleased, considering that this was mentioned in the blurb under the Halo series' entry in the list :p

I wish Games TM would hire me, I've only done work for free (well I got to keep the review copies).

Actually Games TM really aren't big fans of Goldeneye either so I'm not surprised. I've actually not got much problem with Goldeneyes multiplayer, with 4 friends it may be messy and have severe framerate problems but it's still decent fun. I'd actually put Halo above it but halo is merely an average multiplayer experience in my eyes when there's similar deathmatch games like Unreal Tournament and Half-Life deathmatch around.

Did you actually stop and think whats actually going on here? You start off in a train at the start of HL2. No back story on how you get their/where you are or what has happened to mankind since the first game. Then you just go from point A-B and the game ends. Repeat for episode 1 and most of 2 from what I have seen. No cutscene`s in the game to expand the story just a load of poor set pieces and videos from the doc telling you to hurry up to point B.

We ARE the cutscene man. As far as I know, Gordon himself doesnt know what has happened since HL1 ended...so why would the player. Gordon literally knows as much as what we see in the game, piecing it together bit by bit. Its a different move from being told everything in a game, this way its more realistic becasue Gordon is on the run after all...the only info we get is from sympathisers/rebels.

Its similar to HL1 in that respect, all we knew then was that Gordon got a new job...then the place went to sh!t. Info was gathered through communications, overheard conversations, scientists & Barney.

    Hmmmmm.....

Chrono Trigger /Seiken Denetsu 3 - These two are in a league of their own. Best SNES games imo

    Wipeout 2097/64 - Sheer addictiveness

Tekken 3 - My favourite fighting game hands down.

    Rock'n'Roll Racing (Pure Nostalgia tbh)

Exile 3 (Mac RPG, remade recently as Avernum 3. Unbelievable. A landmark RPG title. If you've ANY interest in RPGs, play it. Incredible storyline and quite complex)
    http://www.avernum.com/avernum3/index.html

Escape Velocity (What Elite could have been. Just... Magnificent. A must-play - new thread on it)

FF VII (Desperately flawed, but a revelation at the time)

GTA 3/Vice City (Again, not the best in hindsight but a shockwave when it was released)

Metal Gear Solid - Nothing needs to be said :D

    Seriously?
    Resident Evil 1 to 3?
First, that's three games, second, there's no way they are "best games ever", especially since the first one was redone so much better on the Gamecube.
As for Resident Evil 2 and 3, the second one was ok, but the third? And none of them can really hold a candle to Resident Evil 4.

As for Nam 1975 and Operation Wolf, ??????
I mean, I have Nam 1975 on the Neogeo and its nothing more than ok, far better games than that on the format, far better shooter games with a war theme.

And regarding Operation Wolf, erm, well none of that series were much cop but at least Operation Thunderbolt was better looking and had two players.
