    Hi MDFM,

How many did you have down to run??

oh none, i was just spectating as it's only a few mins drive away from me! Hopefully it'll go ahead this sat finally...though today again there was a lot of frost and ground is still quite hard.

I think the reason as to why some point-to-points are only called off on the day is because the organisers will try to run the meeting at all costs (except safety, of course). Don't forget, the point-to-points are one of the biggest sources of income to the hunts.

Anyone for Bellharbour Sun.? Surely the most beautifull p2p course in the world!

Ear to the Ground have a feature on point-to-pointing this evening at 8.30pm on RTÉ 1. It was recorded at the Dungarvan point-to-point.

Anyone see this feature? What did ye think? I thought O' Connor came across very well on camera with solid and easily accessible information about the whole point-to-point 'scene'.

I saw a few minutes of it, but have recorded it anyway.
The bit i saw i thought Derek was a very friendly, down to earth guy. Info was good and showed a real Irish Race meet.

The P2P sceen is great at the moment BUT with the help of local media and of course RTE/TV3 it can be massive. I mean i only knew snippets of what p2p racing was for the first 2 years i was in ireland - if you knew of it the info was there, however a newcomer can be totally oblivious to what's going on!!

The land is in fairly good condition where the p2p is to be run..only thing is there has being fair bit of rain past 2 nights - so prob by end of 3rd race the going will be heavy enough.

Just saw this on the p2p website:

8 February 2010 Punchestown to race RIGHT HANDED

The Punchestown Point to Point will now be run right handed.

Although in recent years it has been a left handed course it is now reverting to a right handed circuit matching the course proper.

There have been in the past a number of last fence fallers and also new ground has been made available which encouraged the Committee to make the move to revert to a right handed course for Sunday.

Going is good to firm. Shouldn't be tacky but not far off tacky.
Night time temperatures are -4 every night but ground thaws out fast by 11am. No fog here all week.
Forecast is clear dry days and frosty nights.

    Thank you 746watts.... :D

Looking forward to tomorrow's racing :D

Weather has actually been pretty decent for the last week - I nearly don't know what to do not having the rain dictating when I get the horse out!

Unfortunately I'm not going to make it to the Pigeons tomorrow, but best of luck to those of you with runners tomorrow! :D

Looking forward to tomorrow's racing :D

First race is at 1pm, last race (#6) at 3:30pm. No divides in any race.
Expect delays coming into the field, we use 3 John Deere 110bhp to pull in the lorries, jeeps and boxes will be fine on their own power. Allow 30mins-1 hour to travel the last 2 miles as we get the traffic in (from 2 directions) as fast as possible.

Lorry people- Make sure you have a towing pin and grease it a little/take out last years bird's nest to make our job faster. :D
Lorries that come in the gate and cross the track there's a base of gravel off to the left of the gravel avenue that will hold 2 lorries side by side so we can allow jeeps to pass behind and hook lorries up to the tractors. Jeeps & boxes can slip past onto the grass and be directed by parking stewards.
Spectator cars will then have room to zoom down the gravel road (200m) up behind the Jockey changing rooms to the car park (right beside the parade ring and bookies).

Please do not attempt to abandon cars on the gravel avenue coz I will get cross. :P

When you wish to leave, and races are still on and traffic is still coming in, please please please tell a steward on the avenue first and we will organise your escape within a few minutes. If you try to bully your way onto the gravel road against the flow of traffic causing chaos, I will be cross. :P

Thanks for the heads up Watts.

I arrived at about noon. Amazing setting and the day was very enjoyable. Only thing that would have capped the day off would have been my horse winning instead of being beaten by the narrowest of margins!

Anyone going to Stradbally on Sunday?

(sorry smartaform - Tallanstown is a little too far for me to travel!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 313 ✭✭smartaform

Not fair, Not fair, Not fair!!!

    Why Stradbally??? :D

Might go there next month for a day out.

Because it's much closer than Tallanstown (50 mins v about 150 mins)...

I should be asking you "Why not Stradbally?!!" :D

Hope the preparations for Tallanstown are going well, that the weather stays fine and that the horse runs well!

No gelding maiden at Stradbally
Would only be about 20 min drive for us if we went there.

Forecast is looking good, fingers crossed it stays warm :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,339 ✭✭✭convert

That's annoying - I remember we were lucky last time we ran there as they had a 'Confined Maiden' which, although restricted to a specific number of 'adjacent hunts', happened to include the hunt from which we got the Hunter's Cert.

Heard the weather forecast at lunchtime - seems that the weather is to improve even more towards the weekend, with nice sunny weather... Here's hoping!

It'll give the ground a chance to dry out, so hopefully it'll dry nicely rather than being that awful 'tacky' or putty-like going....

  • Registered Users Posts: 313 ✭✭smartaform

That confined race is still on this weekend, however i prefer to keep this fella in an easier class - or more restricted class :D:D
Don't want to run into a smart 5 year old that flogs us... lol

Note: Our Clonakilty Point to Point Races take place at Beamish’s Farm, Inchydoney Island, not Darrara, the location which the Turf Club had on their fixture until we got it corrected recently. Our first race is at 2pm, Sunday, May 30.
Thanks to Clonakilty Agricultural College and Teagasc for hosting us at Darrara, a fine track where Whinstone Boy was the most famous winner. But our move to Inchydoney last year went very smoothly. It is a right hand track on sandy soil which takes a lot of weather. And it must be one of the most scenic tracks in the country, and perhaps the only point to point on an island (of course, it has been connected to the mainland for more than a century, and is one of Co Cork's best known beach resorts)

The Laois Hunt were blessed with the weather yesterday - I think it's one of the hottest, if not the hottest day I ever spent at a point-to-point! Good racing, too, with some nice horses running.

Was anybody at the Shillealagh's point-to-point in Tinahely last Sunday? How was it?

I see they introduced a 2m 4f race for the mares' maiden (last race). Does anyone know why this was done? It wasn't a 4yo maiden - it was the first race and run over 3m.

Is a 2m4f race something we're going to be seeing more of at pont-to-points?

  • Registered Users Posts: 313 ✭✭smartaform

There should be some of varying distances. The infra-structure of the p2p is at a level where they should be able to organise such things.

Do you not think that would get very messy and pretty much destroy the essence of point-to-pointing?

  • Registered Users Posts: 313 ✭✭smartaform

    Explain - ''Messy''

Obviously 2m 4f would be a minimum BUT ALL options need to be considered. More horses are going to use P2P's over the coming years i feel AND why shouldn't there be some varying distances?

P2P has the opportunity to grow into an even bigger part of Irish racing heritage, however there is no vision....

    How can it grow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,339 ✭✭✭convert

Point-to-points have always been part of the Irish racing heritage and changing distances of races isn't going to impact on that.

kinsales 2day meeting at the start of the summer had several races over 2m4f. a few people said the races were run too fast over the shorter distances. cant say i see it making a real difference overall in p2ps

The races were run too fast???
That would be an odd complaint from those who had horses in the race. A unique selling point if i ever saw one.
My point is there should be the option of a 2m 4f version of MOST races. Some horses just do not see out the 3miles and 3f less isn't going to hurt anyone. If anything, it would open up one extra area of knowledge if you were selling on P2P horses.

So you want to see more races where horses go flat out for three miles while negotiating fences and whoever can go fastest for longest wins?

Unless you have a horse who's an out-and-out stayer.

With all races being the same there's no hassle in entering, but if it changes then it'll become more like finding a race on the track, and could go for a month without having a race only to have three or four races held over one weekend.

Isn't that the point of Horse Racing?

If you also read my post at all except for parts you wanted to attack, i said there should be the option of a 2m 4f race AS WELL....
The introduction of varying distances will only improve the P2P system (which is good now but can be better), hopefully improve some tracks so they can cater for these AND also improve the tactics and judgement of those theives on horseback.
