Thanks for being condescending though, it's always good. If only you'd put a '' in the post, I could have ignored it

You're welcome, i felt the condescending tone quite fitting in reply to your post.

Committing playground slagtastic sentiment to print was a stupid miscalculation on Tesco's part. Boorish culture ftl.

Red hair is determined by distribution of melanin, as is black skin. Perfectly good analogy, but some posters can't seem to digest it. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. You'd be rightly seen as a neanderthal if you issued the same card with dark skin as the butt of the joke. But red-haired people are somehow fair game? The cognitive dissonance is crazy. The woman made a good call. I'm glad Tesco saw sense and retracted. All DNA goes back to the one small group of humans anyway. Slagging off people with red hair (or ginger hair as many refer to it in Britain) hints at some sort of nonsensical WASPy blond-haired, blue-eyed supremacy that belongs back in the 19th century. Good riddance to it and may the enlightenment continue.

    It's actually a ludicrous analogy.
The card with the red haired kid is making fun of an element of one ethnicity; a hair colour.
A similar card using a black kid would be singling out and degrading an entire ethnic group; simply for being of that race.
A race, by the way, who in a number of coutries have gone through slavery, apartheid and had many of their number killed simply for being of that group; not really analagous to this case.
Apart from that, I agree with you; can't understand where this 'ginger' nonsense has come from.
And in this case, it could result in red haired kids having to put up with more crap.
Personally I hope many people with red hair, related to people with red hair or friends of people with red hair do choose to take offense to this and show it by not shopping in Tesco's; would be great to see this backfire.

Don't people have anything else to worry about.

It was a joke, do we still know the meaning of joke.

Everything is taken so serious these days.

i suppose someone is going to be so traumatised by the card they will have to sue, get a bit of cash and it's all cured.

Soon to be removed from Tesco, every birthday card that makes any form of joke of the recipients age.

 Because that's the exact same type of argument.
I agree with the angry mother, as a ginger, school was tougher as a child. The card will make other kids believe even santa possibly bullies gingers, and is in my opinion the exact same as if it was an overweight child.
Gingers get more stick that overweight kids do! Ok, so most kids are overweight now, but when I was in school there was one ginger for every one overweight kid and the fatty was not hassled by other kids, but did hassle the ginger.

Whats all this? Another anti red head sentiment thread?

Fucking kudos on the originality children.

Must make yea proud to carry on an English invented trend. (Reportedly with anti-Irish associations.)

Seeing as "ginger" is an offensive term used soley to insult, see if you can spot a problem with the following jokes Tudlytops:
    How many
    Yids
can you fit in a .....
    How many
    ****
    commit ....
    How many
    Packies
    own ....
    How many
    Knackers
    will ....

To the mods: I've put spoilers over the "offensive" words, but if I get banned, infracted, or warned consider the following: why do I feel the need to hid the words I've used above? Why is it acceptable for people to single out one group, but not another? Why are derogatory jokes, phrases, and post, as well as outright abusive posts acceptable here if they are aimed at people with red hair?
And finally (in before the ban) do we wish to perpetuate this? If we make it acceptable here, aren't we only just encouraging younger posters? Why are we encouraging children to pick on and abuse other children because of hair colour? After all it’s as pathetic as picking on someone because of skin colour.

Jesus, people in here really do have something out for gingers!! To be honest, I'd find gingers better looking on average than most ethnic minorities. Still though, nothing beats a voluptous swedish blonde.

And that was all started because of an episode of South Park, so I'm not actually entirely wrong.

Jesus christ, when you're in a hole, stop digging.
You didn't know the difference between America and Canada. It clearly stated in the Telegraph link that the group was created by a 14 year old from Vancouver.

Ok, long thread so I stopped reading half way through, but I'll say this much:

I have red hair, I've actually never had that much trouble over it though, probably because I'm 6'3" and it's a light shade. I'd still get the occasional insult about it though, and it pisses me off to see the degree to which this is tolerated. Terribly sorry to piss on your parade guys, but I'm not going to lighten up over it. You see what you're actually asking here is that myself and others like me tolerate being abused by childish idiots. You don't get to tell me how to react to being insulted.

As I said, it's not been a big issue for me but I do find it aggravating, and I've known people for whom it has been. A friend of mine in particular was constantly bullied in school about his red hair, even today even though he's in his twenties he still get stuff said to him on nights out, he even gets yelled at by people in the street (he's got a particularly bright shade of red so it stands out I guess). Now if I weren't the size I am or maybe if I had a stronger shade of red I'd get the same treatment, and I'd get told by people that I just have to accept it. To me, this kind of treatment is abuse. To the people handing it out, it's just a series of jokes. Except that the jokes happen constantly and are upsetting to the recipient.

Yeah I know, this isn't going to change anyone's mind, but this does upset people, especially kids, and it's not very nice to participate in it. Look at it this way: here you are, on boards.ie reading this post, so you're probably fat, and you're probably unattractive. Most likely you also have bad skin and teeth, and you're a geek. You're probably single, but if by some miracle you are going out with someone, it's because that person is as awful, spotty and as low quality as you are, if not more so, and frankly neither of you can do better. And I know you don't need someone following you around all day reminding you of that, so why do it to us?

Jesus. Your life is bleak man. Would you believe that's each and every boards user? What kind of coincidence is that? Wow.

cop on. i get teased about things sometimes, and i just, you know, carry on living my life. and personally, your height wouldn't deter many people from slagging you - irish nature is generally to have a bit of friendly teasing, so if people don't engage in banter with you it's possible they just don't like you. and a post like that, if it's based on the way you comport yourself in real life wouldn't be too endearing in my own view.

You think children give banter? We're talking about children being taken the piss out of here not one of your mates down the pub. It's a different type of stick really.

i was replying specifically to the previous poster's aggro.

i wouldn't personally condone anyone ripping on a child, but kids will be kids and do it to each other. but at the end of the day the ad wasn't directed at them it was directed towards adults, ergo the funny side of it should have been seen. sure it's perfectly acceptable for blondes to have the piss taken out of them, but just because red-heads have a complex...

So you agree that people should encourage children to single out and abuse other children on the basis of hair colour.

Nice. And you've the cheak to question how another poster "comports" themself "in real life"?

nope, i don't agree that children should be encouraged to be mean to each other. but children are going to do it anyway. more onus on the parents to help develop their children into people that can roll with such issues, rather than sitting around cribbing about it, or hoping they grow tall enough that people will fear them.

Tesco, possibly one of the most horrible and mean spirited of all huge companies in this part of the world, tries to make a quick buck by supplying a stupid tacky card to ignorant fools. What a surprise!

I don't get who would buy this card, is it people to send to people with red hair or is it for people to send people who don't have red hair? Either way its not funny and tries to cover up the fact that you buy xmas cards in Tesco.

    *sigh*

let's go back to our childhoods. children don't slag each other about hair colour. would you be happy, Stevepseudonym? because i'd say then they'd start about your height. or your weight. or your parents' cars. or how many bedrooms are in your house. or how you only got 9/10 in a spelling test in junior infants. or because their fathers could beat up yours. or because of the colour of your schoolbag.

see, kids'll be kids. if one grows up sour because they got a bit of slagging when they were a wee boy, the problem doesn't lie with society.

When did the world become so unbearably, dishearteningly PC that the phrase 'Boys will be Boys' is now the parents fault?

If offence was meant by the card it wouldn't have been published anyhow.
Christmas cards ARE stupid and tacky. Christmas is stupid and tacky.
I for one (if I bought Christmas cards) would buy this card. It is different. If you're insulted by it then don't buy it.

As a sufferer of bullying in primary school for having ginger hair yes I do know where this woman is coming from. Maybe her kids are getting picked on as well and believe me, kids can be cruel. They don't need this added ****e to put up with.

    You are correct sir!
For how many years have blondes put up with blonde jokes? There are actual, physical books full of just blonde jokes. I'm sure there are cards.

It makes kids think its acceptable to pick on other kids for having red hair.

Look i can take a ginger joke as well as everyone else but this joke is directed at kids. If the card said 'Even Santa loves fat kids' it would be an even bigger deal.
