There removeing the cones from the new Sallypark-Newrath DC at the moment so it looks like we have the two lanes there at last! Hopefully will speed up the flow inbound in the mornings.
Also, the old Waterford - Limerick road, is that being re-opened at some stage? The green sign has a location that direction blanked out.

I put this pic up on the M9 thread a few weeks ago, given that they have seemed to narrow the road significantly and the clearance with the N25 overhead looks only suitable for vans, I'd hazard a guess the road will just be for local access only from now on.

Amount of cars who race up the two lines to the traffic lights and not realise, despite warnings, that the lane stops short is scary. Glad to see it re-open, fingers crossed. Wonder when the section for Limerick/Waterford area will open - hopefully in the next few days.

Saw that alright, seems tight even for a van tho.

The reason people race along there is to get past slow movers. It's the last overtaking opportunity until that big hill outside Ballyhale.

Great to hear that the cones are going! :D

They do it even with a line of traffic you have no hope of passing and tend to break suddenly when the lane closes off. Seems to be a bit of both tbh :p

They need to watch themselves, the Gatso van and hairdryer Garda bikers are very often there by the Irish Rail depot entrance!!

I seemed to find it was the BMW/Audi/Volvo/Pre 99 Civic lane...it just seems to attract a certain type of clientele:D

Great not to have to do the slalom course coming into the city this evening! :D

The new bridge and motorway will massively change the traffic patterns in and around Waterford. Here's how I reckon the Grannagh area will look on a regular October morning a year from now. Colours are self explanatory (free flowing, crawling and queueing). Thanks to Munurty for the original pic.

Have to disagree with some of this especially the queue across the bridge to the toll, the traffic wont be that heavy going across. Also, coming from the city approaching the grade seperated roundabout, i'd make that yellow all the way. Good contributing though, really got me thinking.

Excellent pic and graphics, the design of the M9/N24 roundbout does seem like it will be a bit of a own-goal to some extent. It will be very interesting to see how much patronage the bridge actually does get in the mornings.I still think the Sallypark approach will see only a negliable improvement. The chances of all the students heading in that way coughing up 1.90 for each trip is rather small I would guess. The chances of having a WITcard discount for example is slim to none I'd say.

I know its extremely immature of me but each time I pass under those amazeing bridge overpass structures across the Grannagh valley, the name Matlock expressway comes to mind!:D

Yeah, we're not really going to know until it's been open for a while, but I reckon there'll be a queue for the toll in the morning - remember 2-3 km tailbacks into Ferrybank are commonplace.

That's my route in the morning (going from Waterford to Kilkenny), and what sparked this whole idea of mine was when I was imagining how each stretch would be. What I reckon will happen though, is that there will be a lot of inbound traffic coming from the N9 and M24, and a lot of this will be turning right on the Grannagh Interchange towards the bridge. Because this traffic has priority over outbound N9 traffic, I reckon this section will move slowly.

Also, local traffic from Kilmacow and areas between Mullinavat and Waterford that are not served by the M9 will come in towards the Newrath roundabout, and instead of making a right turn towards the city, will turn left to head to the Grannagh Interchange and the new bridge. This will increase the pressure on the N9 outbound between Newrath and the Grannagh Interchange.

Plenty, I would say. The city is very congested, and people want a hassle-free life. When you think about it, €10 a week is not a lot to pay for 20 minutes extra in bed each morning.

Hehe, how times have changed! In my day (early '90s), no students had cars, so I didn't even think of the impact of WIT! :D

Nah, not immature at all! I do an American accent, "it's ninety degrees in the shade here in Houston this morning..." :D

Street lights now on around the bypass and new roads connecting to bridge.

Assuming the bridge opens before the M9.

What is the route to Dublin from the bridge?

Will you have to exit the bypass to head for the City Centre and then go around the roundabout that is currently there back down across the railway crossing and out the current road?

For Limerick will you have to do the same or will you exit the bypass and head for Limerick directly via the new roundabout that terminates the M9?
Will there be access from this roundabout maybe for the Dublin road?

Yes, you will exit the bypass at the Grannagh interchange, head towards the city centre and then at the Newrath roundabout you will take the old Dublin road as at present.

For Limerick you will exit the bypass at the Grannagh interchange, but you'll head the opposite way, and this will take you to the Quarry roundabout, the one where the M9 will terminate. From there, you just take the N24 as at present.

Not that I'm aware of... although the Kilkenny People reports today that the M9 as far as Danesfort is due to open in late December, so Dublin and KK-bound traffic won't have to go via the Newrath roundabout for very long! :D

Public will get chance to walk across new bridge
    By Gillian O’Neill

A ONCE in a lifetime chance to walk across Waterford’s iconic new bridge will be given to the people of the city and surrounding areas in advance of the opening of the €530m bypass in October.

A special Community Day when all residents of Waterford and South Kilkenny will be invited to come and walk the bridge is being planned as the final works on the bridge and adjoining road networks continue on schedule.

Just wondering if this idea still being planned. Would love a stroll along that bridge!

October 20th seems to be the date considering it is a PPP I can't imagine the contractor waiting around for a minister to open the road when there is moeny to be made. - In these recessionary times I am sure any minister would only be too delighted to be associated with a good news story!!

    I hope it's true. That's Tuesday 20th so. Can't come soon enough ;)

Drove up the old Limerick Road by Grannagh tonight. Got onto the site - there seems to be still a missing roadway. There is a signup saying Tool Plaza ahead but no actual roadway.

Head out towards Grannagh, over the railway and take a left turn on the currently closed road to Limerick. Half way up take a left (before the new bridge) and there is a big green sign saying "Toll Plaza Ahead" yet the area has no road surface at all. It was pitch black, so ill have a look later and see.

the road you headed up was the old N24 Limerick road. this road has a new flyover (see post #202) just past the Ferry Bar which carries the N25 WCB Mainline to the Suir Bridge.

More than likely you saw was a sign on the mainline (Above your head) for the Toll Plaza

Heres just a couple of pics from the Grannagh junction roundabout area this weekend,

Approaching from the N24/N9 DC heading inbound to Waterford ,they have managed to squeeze in 3 lanes (just about) with the N25 East lane only as wide as the hard shoulder, the other 2 lanes are labelled R448 and N25 west.

A poster on Upthedeise is reporting the bypass opening next Monday 19th October at noon by Minister Cullen.

Sorry, security were on bridge removing a group of people so got no access at all

Anybody have any thoughts why security on this project seem so hellbent on not letting any Sunday strollers on the route. Its not just the bridge area where they are sensitive ,I've heard from people out the Slieverue and Kilmeaden side getting asked to leave aswell, whereas on the M9 security are never any bother even though its the same security firm:confused:

One is a PPP and any damage will be bourne by the company, whereas the other is a public so any damage will bo borne by the taxpayer....could be wrong though

    Ha???

Isn't the usual deal that the Minister cuts a ribbon at noon, then gets his photo taken in a vintage car, some farmers protest and then they open the road around 3 or 4 in the afternoon?

In fact I thought that roads always opened in the afternoon - is this not so? Surely it's safer all round for drivers and those working on the road.

think it's part of the bye laws for the toll - maybe that's what they mean by "October 20th Handover (Permit to use)

Ah that is great news. It's truly historic really! For decades a second bridge crossing has been talked about in Waterford. It is great to see it finally happen and will be a great boost to Waterford and surrounds.

Historic and beautiful - great news indeed!

Couple of questions on the bypass while I am here.

Does anyone know what speed limit will be for this road?

Will there be Tag lanes at the Toll plaza and if so will any existing tag work?

100 Km/H and Yes all existing Tags will work

I would imagine 100 km/h (since it's not a motorway). There will probably be a lower limit in the vicinity of the toll plaza. We'll know for sure on Tuesday though! :D

    dougal wrote: »

Check your tag provider's website, but AFAIK, all tags are supposed to work at all toll plazas in the Republic, including any new ones that come on stream, such as the Suir Bridge.

So in short, yes and yes to your questions.

I doubt it very much, AFAIK there is a safety Audit taking place at the weekend along the whole road so it would be safe to assume they would not want Joe Public involved

I guess the best we can hope for is that Kilkenny and Waterford County councils have the cojones that the Cork CC lads had in putting a 120km/h limit on the N25 DC approach into Cork as far as Dunkettle.

However given past form I very much doubt the local councils would have the foresight to do this.

they wont even up the limit on the Outer Ring Road which at the moment is a lousy 60 Km/h, so what hope do we have for 120 Km/h on the WCB

Thats not the only DC cork have bumped - the Ballincollig Bypass and before it became motorway, the Watergrasshill Bypass were also raised to 120. But then again Cork also has masses of 100km/h R road, they seem to like their speed!

They are dead feckin right! Cork people always seem to have their independent view of rules for the country so I'm not suprised!
Good to see some common sense down there ;)

I managed to get out around the bypass today for a look, it's hard to imagine that after all the frustrating years of planning and promises that it's almost open. It's also unbelievable the number of people working on all parts of the site, redoing sections of concrete, cleaning, putting up signs, backfilling, landscaping etc

Because of this, it was impossible to get onto the road but I did get a few photos.
