I've played WoW for about three years now, on and off. My biggest bonehead noob mistake was running around in vender gear. It wasn't until I was about LV35 that I discovered the AH. I think had even gave the venders some blue Items not knowing what they were worth.:D

When I first created a mage ( my first character) and saw I could equip a sword, I went around dropping frost novas then rushing in like a mad man swiping and hacking at enemies.

I couldnt understand why my damage output was so poor, and I died so much.

I figured " I obviously need more strength".

I then thought WoW was **** because I couldnt get any Str items for my mage...

Thankfully a mate of mine was over one night to give me tips, and when i leg out a big sigh cause i couldnt find any mage str items, he gave me a firm clip around the ear, took me out of my seat, logged out, deleted my character, and told me to start again..

    Learned my lesson

A few weeks ago we were waiting outside Yogg-Saron's room and the RL announced 5 min break. I took off my headphones, and went for a cup of tea. When i came back entire raid was dead and screen/vent full of WTF?!

I had dropped headfones on the the "W" key, and every1 else watched in horror as my toon ran in leeroy-stylee :P

    First char, Rogue:
Level 11 - NumLock, for relief from RSI.
level 20 - Cooldowns 101: No matter how fast you hit buttons 2 and 3, you won't kill that boar any faster.
    level 30 - Macro Pickpocket + Ambush/Garotte. $$$
level 33 - Autoloot? Auto Self Cast? Doh!
level 36 - Mouse>> Arrow keys for turning.
    level 40 - Instances aren't just for level 80s.
    level 41 - Questhelper FTW!
    level 47 - Nobody respects a Gnome.

    Reroll, Hunter:
level 1 - Hunters aren't the best for PvP. Just as well you rolled this char to grind for gold...
level 9 - Leveling through the same areas just isn't as much fun the second time around.
level 55 - If you're going to take Engineering, you really should take Mining as well. (And shouldn't you be collecting leather?)
level 62 - Just buy the damn gryphon. You can build the gyro later, but you're getting your ass kicked now!
level 62 - Never delete a character, you never know when you'll want an alt for PvP, maybe a Rogue? ...

lol I was the same, I only realised the AH existed at about level 30 or so :S, I'd sell all the stuff I found to vendors, including BoE blues and stuff /cry

Never seen this, I leveled my warrior through tanking instnaces :P

I had a habbit of giving away things that are worth quite a bit of gold because I just wasn't sure of what they were. Recipes mainly.

Now I am known as "The Jew", over 40K gold and I still get the guild to enchant my gear :P

Tell me your gold making methods, i want a chopper!

Oh and the only noob thing i remember doing was like ropes, taking the zepplin to the horde base in STV and getting one shotted by the crocs outside, i logged off shortly after in total confusion as to where to go, so i started a nelf priest instead :)

Coulda been an orc hunter if it wasn't for that damned zepplin.. :D

Right, there are a lot of things that you can do to make gold. Most people overlook these things as "a waste of time" since the increase is not huge... but remember every single piece of copper counts. I will brag a little before I start.

I have the best BOE gear for my main, offspec and mainspec and my alt. I have the chopper and most of the pets, I have 51 mounts, I have epic gems for my main, his offspec and my alt, in everything. I have the best enchants for my main, his offspec and my alt. I have a good few professions which I leveled up to maximum. I have epic mounts on both characters, and bought 1 for the GF. How did I do it? Lots of patients. Now I am making a solid fortune. Contraty to popular belief, this doesn't take 10 hours a day, which some claim. It's hard at the start, but once you get momentum, it doesn't really stop.

Remember that it is just a game, you don't need to screw people over or be a complete ass, but it's ok to be mean with your gold ;) People ask me for gold, to buy them things, kiith is the only person I don't mind doing it for from time to time. Even my GF gets nothing :P

Sell everything, all your trash is worth a lot of gold. Don't delete it or leave it on mobs.

Do your dailies, I only do the argent ones, my cooking JC and fishing dailies, I enjoy them, they are fun for me and very easy. Net about 200G at least from these.

DE everything you can, all boes that you don't need/want, DE them. Sell the mats or keep them for your enchants.

Have some gold making profs, this does make a huge differance. If you have one character and he is JC and enchanter to get the best stats for raiding, then you might find it a little difficult. I have JC, blacksmithing, herbing, enchanting, skinning and mining as my main professions, I also have fishing and cooking. I have others which I am leveling on alts. Use them. They are very very good for making gold. Do your dailies in them every day.

I do the argent dailies for the seal things... I buy pets and I buy pets from time to time. Instant sale of 500G on my server, lots are up for 1K but I don't believe they sell.

Sell things like northrend spice, relic of ulduar, potions, cloth, anything that you pick up that you cannot use. They do sell, just be patient.

Sell your CD's, I mean farm a little for mats and sell your flasks, sell your titansteel etc etc.

I use emblems and honor to buy gems, they sell for about 160G minimum each on my server. Honor is easy to grind so are emblems.

I get people to make my herbs into darkmoon cards, sell them on ah, if you get lucky, you will be extremely rich very fast.

Search the AH for items that are below normal price, I made a huge amount of gold doing this in TBC, bought large prismatic shards for 20G (buying 40 or 50 at a time) and selling them for 30G, not all at once ofc. This is free money, especially when it is enchanting mats. It is a gamble though, as you are not guaranteed a profit. The price might stay at 20G or even go lower.

I don't make money from selling crafted goods, too much of a gamble in my opinion. I also don't spam trade with /2 Blacksmith looking for work. Waste of time.

Sorry for going off topic, but if you want I can make a new thread and post some more in detail?

whats the best way to make money leveling? besides the AH. I spend enough money on nosale auctions

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

I made a lot of money leveling on my alts, not so much that I could retire off ;) Enough to get my epic mount, my dual specialisation and my winter flying thingy.

I don't claim to be an expert, I didn't write up any gold guides or use them. I can just give you advice based on my own experience. I hope I don't get your hopes up.

Over heal, I believe you have a low level character? Since you just started playing the game?

Important things to note, if you are a casual player and do not expect to raid hardcore like Nelfhiem or insidia guilds, then your professions are not massively important. If you do want to raid in these big very hardcore strict guilds, your professions are extremely important imo.

Anyway, every server is differant, you must do a little research into what professions on your server make gold. In the last expansion I made huge gold from mining and herbing on my main. Some will claim it is JC and enchanting. Other things such as engineering only really benifit the owner of the profession and there isn't a massive amount of gold to be made.

Collecting professions tend to be the best as you don't have to spend any gold on them and they give you maximum profits for your input. For instance, blacksmithing is pretty expensive to level up, but there is not a massive profit to be made. You will have to grind for the ore or buy it off the AH. You are also not guaranteed to sell your crafted items. I have sold very little from my crafting professions.

When you are leveling, the same applies as for level 80. Sell everything that is grey, some white item can be sold on the AH, all green and blue bind on equip items should be disenchanted and the materials sold on the auction house. Do not that sometimes the item may be worth more than the materials after disenchanting. Such as weapons. I suggest you get an addon called enchantrix, I think that shows you the % of what will drop once you disenchant it. Auctioneer is also another addon that will help you make money indirectly. It is very handy indeed.

There are items that you will make more money from if you sell them seperately. I always sell my infinite dust seperate, even if I have a few hundred. Scale of economies (I know I probably misspelt the term).

There are times to sell items on the AH too. Reset day is the best for gems and enchanting materials, as people get new gear and need to socket it and enchant it. Friday is also another good day (I am not 100% sure why, more casual players raid? Something to do with PVP?). Try hold off for these days to sell your items.

Before reset is the best to look for deals on the AH, as nobody can outbid you if the servers are down ;) So keep a look out for items that have a very low starting price but are worth a lot more. I see this all the time.

Try quest rather than doing instances, get your gear from instances but try level doing quests, for the gold. If you get a boost, then that's great as more than likely most of the items that drops will not be needed by the booster.

Bag space: Very very important. Get the biggest bags you can afford. This will save you in the long run. Imagine you are in an instance and oyu have to delete items in order to take more... that's lost gold. Also the time it takes you to go back to a vendor, more lost gold.

Always search for people who do enchants, cut gems and craft you items for no fee. They do exist, belive me :) I don't charge people for this service, I understand that people need a little help from time to time.

When you get an item, like a rare pet, ask yourself if you really need it, what would you rather, the gold or the pet?

One little trick I used to use was buying pets from a vendor, say for 5G and sell them on the AH for 30G, (I forget the exact prices, but it was something like this), horde will want to buy them and there are a lot of ignorant people who are unaware that the pets are available for a lot less... Remember only to put 2-3 pets up at any one time.

I also get ore and eternals after a while, craft some cheap craftable items and disenchant them, I sell the materials for a lot more than the item or original materals are worth.

Overheal, with experience you will learn what sells on your server. Be it certain gems, craftable items, or enchanting materials. People are always leveling professions so there will be a demand for low level materials too, you can make a lot from this. I guess it's what you really want. I would suggest mining and herbalism. They have always worked for me for gold. Don't expect to make thousands over night, it's like a small snowball at the top of a gentle slope. You know?

If anybody has any other tips or what not, please do share...

Oh yea, almost forgot. I don't do this myself but I really should. uncut gems are worth less than cut gems, generally speaking. So you get a red gem, cardinal ruby, uncut it is 120-140G but if you cut it into a gem that is in high demand like 20 strenght, 39 spell power, they can go for up to 190G on my server. Find a jewel crafter that will do this for you. It's free money.

A great gold maker is friends... befirend people with professions, you will get your stuff for free if you have the materials in most cases. Or you could join a guild.

    Hope this helps a little...

i agree . presently my gold is at a all time low . ive hit 16k . im owed about 5 from the guild and the like but everything said above is good advice i do most of it myself.

id also like to say only do instances when you hold wg. do the wg quests and do every quest in northrend once 80.

when leveling in northrend do the quests in the early zones first so you can have loads left over in the aera's that will give more gold from quests

Biggest noob mistake was rolling alliance. Maybe it was installing the game in the first place. Worst about it is I may go back to playing alliance out of necessity to find a few good players who aren't complete assholes. And that'll only be because they're real life friends rather than people I meet in game who think the anonymity of the game means they can do or say whatever they want and get away with it.

Giving a few tips to people to get some gold, some are obvious some are not. Belive me or not, I don't care, if I was that worried about ye believing me I wouldn't have posted my way of making gold and just posted a screenshot. But I didn't, why? Because I don't really give a damn is some jealous begrudger doesn't believe me.

How do you make that out to be over confrontational? He could have had the decency to string together a sentence. I appretiate your free psycoanalyis, but I am not in need of it..

You kinda just proved his point :D

40k gold isnt that much nowadays. Personally i just like to stay around the 10k mark myself as its fine for raiding and respeccing and i never have any probs enchanting gear i get.

If your struggling to get 1k gold as a level 80 your doin something wrong.

  • Registered Users Posts: 161 ✭✭af666x

I was just gonna say that. 40k is peanuts nowadays. You could have that inside a week if you know what you're doing. He has no need to prove his wealth to anyone :)

lets look at it over 7 days for someone who has a main 80 and an alt 80:

7 days worth of dailies - daily heroic, dailies for AT and SoH.
    Gold rewards - 234g x2 = 468g per day
    Bonus - champs purse x8 = 80g per day
Loot - 6 quests that involve lootable mobs (random amounts. At least 20g per day)
    Daily Heroic - 20g + loot + gold from mobs x2

so we can look at 608g per day for 7 days. That's 4256g in a week not including the grey and possibly better items you will pick up from looting mobs. I typically see 2-5 green items from the AT dailies alone. That's another 10ish infinite dust if you're unlucky! another 30g ish.

Best part is - this takes up about 2 hours of your time. You don't have to kill yourself to get it done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

2 hours for 50 dailies? 4 of them being dungeons? /facepalm...

Sorry but your post has absolutely no truth in it what so ever :)

It is possible to make 40K a week, but extremely rare, one would have to be playing much more than the average hours. Say 22 hours a day :) Claiming that anybody can make that is just wrong.

40K is not peanuts, but it's not an almighty amount.

I gave tips on how to make money without being dedicating your life to it. Simple little things, which make people gold. Most people still hover around the 2-3K mark, as most people are casual players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 161 ✭✭af666x

There is truth in my post - I didn't factor in the time for daily heroic - that is my mistake and I'll hold my hand up for that one.

Where are you getting 50 dailies from though? I said SoH and AT dailies. That's 15 max.

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,007 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Gold and the economy is relative to the age of the Realm tbh. Might be peanuts in the oldest servers.

And thats assuming someone wants to play a game to farm gold. Most people do whatever the hell they feel like because its the most fun for them. Which is why im going to end up an impovershed engineer with an army of exploding sheep.

There's a limit of 25 dailies per each character. Waste of time to do them all, better off doing some herb/ore grinding. The argent tournament dailies are well worth it though, they give you more gold and extra items which can be turned into gold. Every 4 days you will get enough for a pet, on my server they go from 500 - 1000 which is a great boost in gold.

If you only factor in the AT and SOH dailies, it would take you about 1 hour and 20 mins minimum... not factoring in looking for others to help with Threat from above. Can't put an estimate on the daily heroic though. Could be anything from 30 minutes to 90, by the time you get a group and all the rest.

You gotta admit though, 40K in a week is an extremely difficult thing to do. 40K in a month is more doable but still a feat in itself. You would need to be extremely lucky with the AH or have a niche in the market somewhere.

Out of curiosity I asked in trade on my purposely made alt if 40K was considered to be a lot of gold in wotlk... people /w me asking "do you have that much, how did you get it OMG BBQ" etc etc. It must be a decent amount still.

I wonder how much worth could be put on it in cataclysm. I wanted to get to about 100K in order to buy whatever I wanted when the new expansion came out. New mounts, extraordinary mounts like the chopper. Buying whatever gear I wanted. But I wonder will the cost of, say the chopper or mamoth, be 30-40K each in the new expansion? I am very tempted to get the 16K mamoth, but I don't see the huge benifit of having it.
