Who gives a feck how people look at you for bringing your own food, it saves you a night out a week in rip off lunches! Also no, I dont think anyone would take any notice unless they were really up themselves, they're more likely to be jealous that you were arsed to bring food and they weren't.

There lies the problem. I've been told Trinity is full of these kind of people :(

Noone will look at you funny if you bring in a lunch. Jesus, how the hell does Trinity get this kind of rep?!

The only people that will want to befriend stuck-up and ignorant people are those that are themselves stuck-up and ignorant. Personally I wouldn't worry all too much what those people think of you (I'm probably going to be rather similar on the lunch front), the decency of the majority overrides the prejudices of the few in most walks of life - I doubt Trinity will be much of an exception.

Would people look at ya funny if you brought your own lunch or could you get away with sitting on a bench with your lunchbox :D

No way, go to the GMB couches and you will find people eating lunch there all the time.

They were selling Top Gear lunch boxes in Dunnes a while ago.. I was tempted! If I saw someone sitting eating out of a Top Gear lunch box, I'd befriend them straight away :D

I will be right next to you on the bench with the packed lunch. I would much prefer to spend my cash on nights out than lousy lunches. I was browsing through the propaganda that societies sent out; looks like there will be quite alot of free food for next week anyway, bagsy the smoothies!

Dragonforce are utter tripe, designed to satisfy all those metal meatheads out there.

Tesco vodka- €7.50 a shoulder. Next to that, even €2 drinks are a rip-off.
Lucozade sport (or cheap knockoff)- best mixer (far superior in masking the vodka taste than any soft drink).
Caffeine pills from boots are less than €4 for 48x 50mg. Works out much cheaper than energy drinks or college-bought coffee.

Computer rooms can get really full, familiarise yourself with the locations of all the different computer rooms. If the one you are in closes, ask where a 24hour one is.
Computers not in a computer room are prone to being incredibly slow, avoid if possible.
Generally porn can be looked at without trouble, but you really shouldn't :D.
Also, most societies will have one night out at freshers' week, one at halloween and then feck off, never to be heard of again.

If you start getting annoying texts from the phil just do what i did and send them a text saying "fuck off" and they will stop.

The dining hall is a must imo. It's up the steps beside the buttery. Opening hours are limited, but you get a filling meal for a reasonable price (€5.45 gets you a student special + veg and mash + dessert). The meat can be a bit dodgy though, so perhaps on some days the vegetarian special might be a better bet.

Finally, it's cheaper if you buy your chocolate in multiples of freddo bars (i worked it out).

Yes, +1 on the dining hall - just for the experience of your first time in there and the usual reaction of 'we can eat in there?!'

€2 drinks can be alright depending on what you're getting! For example pints of bulmers for €2 is better value than what you get in most off licences or supermarkets.

Places like Crawdaddy/XXI/Tripod/Spy usually do bottles of VK Ice and Bacardi Mojitoes for 2 yoyos, and then more generally you can get bottles of miller or cans of bav for €2.:)

One thing I'll say that if there a €2 drinks and you're into vodka and looking crazy it's better to get servings rather than shots. A serving is 35.5ml while shots are usually 25ml or less. Over a few drinks that adds up to quite a bit.
6 pack of Tesco Kick is a decent cheap mixer for it too.

A few places do €2 drinks on Monday nights. Captain America's does €3 drinks on student nights (which I think is Mon - Thurs). None of the bottle crap, they give you proper pints.

Freddo bars are very cheap, but not as good value since the price increase to 25c.

Incidently, they are only 15p up north and in the uk. If you were really thrifty you could stock up on them at sterling prices, which currently work out at around 17c per bar.

Are any banks offering anything of use to students? Have to set up an account and want something free if possible.

Open one with AIB and you get a voucher to get the Student Travel Card for free.

Do you need proof of address to open one? ..And does anyone have any idea how someone who doesn't own a home/have a driving licence can get proof of address without too much hassle?

I heard something about Ulster Bank giving out €100 if you opened an account? Probably all sorts of hoops to jump through before they give it though.

Maybe I should have specified that my microwave will be in my kitchen... not in Trinity :pac: But it's open to all that need a baked potato in 7 minutes.

I only opened mine a few weeks ago. I basically went in with my passport, told her my address and opened it. I didn't even need to lodge any money in. I didn't show her a utility bill either, even though I think I should've needed one. I'd suggest just going into the bank and talking to someone, they don't expect students to have utility bills etc, just prove your identity really.

I think when I did first year the first time I used my CAO acceptance letter as proof of address... Either that or my giro from DIT.

If you have another bank account just get them to send you a statement.

I went in to AIB with just my atm card and they changed my account to Student Plus! Twas great! Have to still apply for my free student travel card. They also give you €50 free into your account but you need to make minimum 3 transactions and minimum 3 top up by text by 30th November 2009. The 3 transactions should be no bother but you need to register for AIB Internet&Phone banking for the top up by text. And the minimum top up by text is €10. So if you think about it, you HAVE to top up by €30 to get the €50 into your account. So really you're only getting €20. (Yes I've thought about this a lot).

And the Student Travelcard can be bought for €12.....to be honest it sounds like Ulster Bank are doing a better deal for students.
