    Hello Everyone,

I'm starting science in Trinity in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone has any helpful advice for surviving the transition from school to college?
Any and all tips are appreciated :)

Learn how to use a ****ing condom. Don't carry them around in your wallet/hand bag. Don't put them on inside out. Don't wait for it to go purple before you get in checked out.

A part from that, there is no advice, you'll find your own way and as problem crop up which are unique to you, ask for help here or elsewhere.

Above all don't be a muppet towards the old men like me.

Ah there's not much to know really, it can only be easier to go into college. Especially if you haven't moved away from family or anything like that.

Any societies in particular anyone would recommend joining?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,629 ✭✭✭raah!

The Phil and the Hist are two you'd be mad not to join really. Loads of good stuff there. Debates and then free food and beer afterwards. The hist fits nicely into any stereotypes of trinity you'd like to see, with its tradition and all that.

Apart from that it's a matter of preference.

In my experience, you make more friends through clubs and socs then you do through your course.

I'm in BESS though, which has less hours than science, so it might be different.

You'll be a Hamilton boy. Avoid the Hist and the Phil, associating with **** has a high likelihood of turning you into one. Join something manly a cool like boxing or Judo. Join DUCSS

What's the food and drink society like?! I saw nice discounts on their website...

They're actually a bunch of toffs.

Thus speaks Boston, who has never in his life been accused of being a wanker. Or a twat, a tosspot, a psychopath or a grumpy old bastard. :pac:

OP: Join a ****load of societies and clubs, try a bit of everything and see what sticks. I got press-ganged into joining Ultimate Frisbee, never expecting to go to more than one training session to see what it was like, and ended up loving it - I've made some brilliant friends through it, from something I'd never have thought of trying if left on my own. It might leave you a little cash-light at the end of Freshers' Week, but any society worth its salt will have at least a couple of receptions and nights out during the year where you'll more than make it back. Plus, if you find one thing that sticks, and one group of people that you spend the next 4 years having fun with, it's totally worth it.

Oh, and talk to everyone. There's no better time to meet new people than the first couple of weeks of college.

In college libraries are for studying in, not like when people are studying for the LC and go to them to frigging socialise in while they happen to have books open in front of them. If you're in the library, stay quiet or you will be beaten with a rubber hose.

Speaking of rubber hoses, keep in mind what Boston said about learning to use a condom, seriously.

Apart from that join a few societies and meet a few people with similar interests (people in your course don't count, and most of them won't give a shit about the course anyway) and you should be alright

    psychopaths have feelings to :(.

Ah shay, you know you're the exception which proves the rule about the Hist.

Did anyone ever see your man that wandered around the hamilton library last year.
He was a bit of a biker.
    Long, dark, curlyish hair.
Always carried a helmet with him.
    Leather jacket and leather trousers.
There would always be a squelching sound as he walked passed.
I could only imagine the levels of chafing that occured.

That'd be James, AKA "biker dude". Computer science student, imagine that. Think he is still in 2nd year, his original class have long graduated.

He's a Computer Scientist mature student, entered the same year I did, lovely guy, unfortunately he had to repeat some years :(

    Yes.

    And evolution is a lie.

A lot of people dont know that.

    But I do.

Coins and friction will render them useless in a short period of time.

Makes sense for science students, but one piece of advice I'd give my first year self would be to skip more Sociology lectures and classes and spend them doing more entertaining stuff. First year of college is the only year you can really afford to **** about and not give too much of a crap about academics - it's worth taking advantage of that.

As my name references I'm also a Hamilton boy! Seriously, don't take notice of some people's misguided opinions of the Phil and Hist, most have rarely attended one of our events, it seems to be the cool, leftest thing to do to attack the two biggest and most sucessful societies, who provide so much for the student body, eg snooker rooms, open conversation room with table football and tv, computer facilities, other societies have use of our rooms, not to mention the amount of guests brought in, which improves the image of college as a whole.
Everyone has different interests and there are many societies too cater for this, but dont automatically write off the Phil and Hist when you might actually have an interest.
Food and drink soc organise quality events, their Xmass party in particular, ultimate frisbee is woth checking out as its great to meet new people.

PS, that biker guy can be seen liberating tobacco from spent cigarette butts before packing it into his pipe, if you offer him a cigarette he wont take it, or maybe he dosen't like marlboro?

Latest? Child, I've been condemning the Hist and Phil for a long long time at this stage. You and you ilk are a cancerous parasite in this university, monopolising student funding and life for far too long. You make a profit from providing snooker tables (and soon pool tables) and the computer facilities have nothing to do with you bar sharing a building.

Thats a different person all together. This is the reason why fuktards shouldn't discuss members of their class on public forums.

I said leftist, read the post properly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leftist)
Monopolising what exactly? By organising events people are eager to attend and providing facilities college/other socities don't? Every individual who joins the society gets something from it, be they regular attendees, hanging out in the building at lunch times/freshers week and partaking in the entertainment provided, or just coming along to see high profile guests during the year. Another sad example of the rampant culture of begrudery in this country

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

You've a high opinion of your society and it's roll within trinity. Fairly typical I The Hist Phil attitude that the college is here to serve them. Back in your box, I've had my fill of right wing fascists like yourself and McGurk.

How exactly does the college serve any society? Each society recieves funding from the csc and then raises funds through their own events/sponsership.
Oh thats the height of maturity, calling your opponent a facist, I'd really consider myself more centre-left http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law

Away with you, this thread is getting way off topic. Further advice for 1st years, buttery for breakfast, Pav for dinner:D

Ah come on! Pav ftw, so much food for E6, cant go wrong! Buttery's breakfast fry is quality, lunch not so much

What sorta stuff does the Pav do? I still haven't been :( Better than the Hamilton cafe anyway, yes? :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭Hamiltonion

JC06 you're in 2nd yr science right? Um chicken, breaded fish, veg, chips, lasagne, paninis, pizza. Way better than the Ham, wouldnt be too hard though. And you can have a guiness with dinner!:D

Hopefully in time for freshers week or at least the first friday of term! Have been about college quite a bit recently and it looks far from finished, in fact it doesnt look like a huge amount has happened at all! Small bit of structural work so far that seems to be it. They would want to get cracking:D

I didnt, i joined both in 1st year and it was 10e down the drain. Could have joined a few more socs or got 4 cans of bav in the Pav (plus change!)

Dont try this. The guinness in there is muck. The food in there is decentish though compared to the Hamilton cafe. The staff seem to be a lot friendlier too which I appreciate. O Donovans ( i think thats the name ) beside the lombard do some nice grub.

Not a hope. Assuming that they're going to have to finish all the proposed work beforehand, It will be a long while yet. They've done nothing compared to what they have left to do. Doesn't look good I must say.

Quick question - when do we pay the reg fees? Do we need to have sent in the completed "FRS1 Form" first?

I am also befuddled by this. Do I need to send in the FRS1 and GF1 (for grant) forms to Trinity in advance, or just bring them in when we're registering. It says on it to return it, but specifies no date.

My thoughts exactly.. I received the orientation pack yesterday and at the bottom of the FRS1 and GF1 forms it just says to return it to whatever office and gives an address. Could we just post them or hand them in in person before fresher's week?

The whole thing confused me too, so I rang admissions office today: apparently if the form has an address on it you have to post it to that office (i.e the FRS1 Form goes to the treasurer's office). There aren't really closing dates because second rounds applicants have to be considered but asap is what she told me.... ( ya think they would have said that some where in the booklet:rolleyes:)

So we just post the FRS1/ yellow form to the treasurers office?

yup! also the GS1 form for grants (if you qualify for it) along to treasurers office and the Garda Vetting form (if you need it) to Susan whatever her name is at the other office...simple enough eh?...now to go pay the registration fees....

Same I rang the Treasurer's office and they told me that when you send in the FRS1 form they send you out the registration fee form. Then you go to your bank and pay it with the form, quoting your name and student/CAO number.
