mr smyff: am not sure if there is a charge for the gait assessment or not... i had mine assessed by my physio who told me about my over-pronation (which by the way is a mostly female thing!). take a look at the heels on your shoes, is the outerside on each heel more worn down than the other, if so then you are over-pronating.

you gotta look after them feet, after all you are going to be plodding about on them for the next couple of years.... your saturday nights out will soon consist of standing outside benedicts etc breaking up fights, dealing with drunk/vomitty underage drinkers... ha ha ha ha are you looking forward to that!?:D

I enjoy anything to do with Benedicts as long as no one makes me step foot inside it. What a hole! :D

Smyff, if they're going to charge you for gait assessment you could just check what footprint you make when you step out of the shower. If you leave a flat footprint you over pronate, which means you need trainers that emphasise support rather than cushioning. Or if you look at your current trainers and the inside is more worn down than the outside it means the same thing. If they are even or more worn on the outside (which means you supinate) you can go for a neutral shoe that cushions rather than supports.

If you overpronate you can't go wrong with a Brooks Adrenaline GTS, or if you're neutral you could go for a pair of Asics Nimbus - I've just ordered a new pair of these, and they are the canine's testes. :D

I've got a nice pair of Mizuno's, cost me £85 but men's may be more expensive...esp cause you got large feet (;)).

I got mine in 'Up And Running'. I was refunded my £20 (for the wee treadmill test) because I bought my trainers from them, the same day. In fact I only did the wee test because I had already decided i was getting my trainers from them.

If you don't fancy it, scope out a few trainers recommended by the boardies above ^ and get them cheaper on tinternet, try eBay!

I still haven't started running, been doing some weights (and am *really* feeling it today in my shoulders, ouch) and going for long walks up Redburn near Garnerville. I'm trying to motivate myself to start running this weekend, better charge up the trusty mp3 player.

Basically you'll want to try and do exercises that mimic pushing and pulling. If you have access to a gym try machines like chest press for the pushing and seated row machines for the pulling. If you don't go to the gym something like press ups (with clapping for the explosive power you may need) and the bent-over row. They will probably stand you in just as good stead to be honest. If you're quite small you may find the angle a bit more awkward than others will, so you might also wanna throw in some incline presses, basically like the chest press but instead of the arms going straight out in front they will go up at an agle. Again, if you have no gym to go to try press ups with your legs raised off the ground.

The shorter you are the harder it'll be to get natural leverage on the machine, so you may want to try some exercises to strengthen the other parts of your body as well to compensate for it. A strong core will always help with this, so maybe try some russian twists. For working the core it's definitely best to buy a swiss ball, they only cost a tenner and you can do a million things on them.

And don't forget to do some squats. They are a horrible exercise but there's nothing like them for building up leg power.

+1 for getting a gait test done. I got one at Up & Running at Wellington Place. Fairly straightforward and they dont charge if you buy your shoes there.
You would be surprised at what your foot actually does when running.

I paid around £90 for a pair of Asics full-support after getting some painful shin-splints with my JJB bought Nikes.

I'm also size 12 by the way :D Just love going into shoe shops and asking or those bad boys. U&R carry up to size 16 though!

Personally, Im up to around 5k at the moment but only starting to build up any speed. Used a Couch to 5k program for the iphone/ipod touch that tells your time over the music. Only 9 weeks to get from no running at all to 5k comfortably.
Mainly using pushups, crunches, leg lifts, reverse crunches, tricep dips, the occasional pull-up (and other exercises remembered from painful martial arts training sessions!) + lots of for strength.

Just been back to a boxing gym I used to train at up till 3 years ago . Thought I'd see if I was still as fit as I was. I thought I would be....

Not even close! I was bloomin' shattered after 5 mins of circuits. Somehow I kept going, but I don't think I've ever sweated so much in my life. I think I'm still pretty aerobically fit, but my anaerobic fitness is clearly lacking, big time!
I just mention that just in case anyone here has done a lot of steady distance training, they may want to have a look at doing some circuit training which should get the old lactic acid pumping. This may well be pretty useful for the PCA, where there won't be any steady aerobic exercise involved. If anyone's interested there are some great tips at www.rossboxing.com

By saturday I will have done over 50 miles on my exercise bike (3.5 hours), 120 push ups and 120 sit ups. Not too bad saying I hate and never do exercise!

Here. Dont get too hung up on the fitness thang. Itll be wee buns til most. Get yourselves a good pair of trainers. The gym is next to none and youll be taken through it. Mental preparation is the most important thing. Although I have no idea how to help with that. So disregard this completely useless post...

Guys should have no problems at all with the fitness and if you do you really shouldn't be in the police

Any girl under 5'8" should start training now. Make no mistake they will kick you out if you fail the PCA twice on week 19 no matter how good you've done through the course. I've seen girls having to resign in tears but they have no one to blame but themselves cos they made no effort. Willpower will only take you so far

Shelley, you should be trying to use the cable row and the various pushing machines at the gym as well as general upper body strength exercises to help with your push/pull.

Have a look at this website which is very helpful.

    http://exrx.net/Beginning.html

With regards to what weights you use, you just have to start where you feel comfortable carrying out your 2/3 sets. You should be finding it tough at the end of each set and by the end of your final set, you should be unable to complete your last couple of reps. Anything less and your weight is too light. Anything more and the weight is too heavy.

Have a read at the website and you should pick up good tips and getting yourself a decent workout.

I just got a letter telling me I am not considered up to the medical standard but inviting me up to GV for an assesement. I am a wee bit over peak weight but not massive. (5' 8" and about 13.5 stone). Has anyone done this before or any advice I can get would be appreciated. I have started doing a bit of running but I am not what you would call fit yet!

You will have to do the PCA and pass it. Forget about just running. For now, you need to concentrate on sprint work. Walk for 60 seconds, then sprint for 60 seconds. Do this 6 times with no breaks. Get on a rowing machine, go easy for the first 60 seconds and then go like a madman for the next 60, again 6 times in a on its hardest setting with no breaks. Achieve this without needing a paramedic and you'll be prepared for the PCA.

hi everyone. been on here for a while but havent posted. where do i start? i got the call and i am in. only problem is 7 weeks ago i fell (while drunk) and hurt my knee. my gp tells me i more than likely damaged my cartillage, gave me anti inflamitary pills and told me to rest. while my knee is getting better by the day, it is still weak and i fear that the physical aspect off the training might scupper my chances in the hotel. let me know what you think folks. faker

Call them and ask them if you can defer starting until the next intake due to medical reasons. They will ask for something from your doctor to back it up.

Just got my IST pass letter few days ago!

I know I'm getting ahead of myself but....

I'm getting kinda concerned in the back of my mind about the Push Pull...

Im about 5ft8/5ft9 and quite small framed at 10 stone.

I've been hitting the gym this past year,

So I would like to think I'd be able to pass it, Im able to chest press two 24kg d'bells and deadlift around 90kgs...

Anyone able to give me any indication from that how much more work I've got to do!!!

    Cheers Folks!
