Obviously there are the usual suspects like Nike, Adidas, Saucony, Asics etc, and they all make very good shoes, but the brand I would definitely look out for are Brooks. I have a pair of their GTS 9s. They cost £90, and they are honestly the best running shoes I've ever had, better than any £120 Nikes I've ever worn. I can't recommend them highly enough.

hows it goin? think assics are pretty good, gonna go get a pair myself, when I gain the motivation to actually move and do some exercise. try that sports direct shop they usually sell them and I know someone who does a lot of running says they are good!

    hi peeps

i was looking some advice about the fitness side of things

i can run/walk 3 mile in 23 mins is this fast enough or does it need to be all run, god if i ran it all i think i would die

i am also doing the seated row more in the gym bout the only weight machine i like.

i think i am ding about 40 reps of 5 kg, would i need to be lifting heavier weights to help me with the fitness for psni

i am trying to get fit 'incase i am lucky enough to get in this time'

Any running trainer recommendations folks? I need a new pair because my current ones are well past their best  Good links also welcome? Don'tmind spending a few quid because i need them for GV and afterwards anyway.

Get yourself down to Up & Running and get your gait measured. Very important if you are going to be doing alot of running. It determines if you require extra support in the shoe. Prevents injuries.Brooks are good. I have had several pairs. Hard to beat.

    Hi there,

That's actually pretty quick to do 3 miles if you're running it, never mind walking some of it!? Has made my 29 minutes of running at 10kph seem crap now lol.

To answer your question though, yes the whole 5K has to be ran without stopping or walking and as far as I know, ran in less than 33 minutes. So if you just slow down the running part a bit you may find you don't need to slow to a walk at all? Just an idea :o

mustbecrazy thanks for that advise well i am pleased that is quick anyway, god i am not sure if i could run the whole way what i tend to do is do a very fast run for say 2/3 mins maybe @ 12 kph, then down to about 7 for a walk just to get breath bath and then keep doing that.

have u any idea about the push and pull technique etc, i am not slight by any means and tbh i dont want to be a big armed girl my hubby has noticed my arms getting bigger as it is lol

i know the stage is a long way of but i need something to focus on and even if i dont get any further i will have enjoyed the experience and chance to get a bit fitter

    Hello again

Yeah 12kph is very fast. I run at 10kph with the odd burst to 11kph at most. I started off at around 9.3kph. I was very unfit when I started lol. Try going down to 10 and see how long you can run for and then build it from there.

As for the push pull I think if you have reasonable strength in your arms you should be fine. I need to do some weights. I did start but lost motivation and gave up. I started doing press ups too, but couldn't even do one to start with. Still can only do 15 before collapsing in a heap. Anyway, I don't think you need to be musclebound to pass the push pull (at least I hope not or I'd have no chance).

Read that back and realise I need to work harder lol. Did my 5K run today on the road (sooo much harder than the treadmill) and it took me over 33 minutes :(. My own fault for being inconsistent with running. Can do it in under 29 on the treadmill.

I know there are much wiser than me with regards the whole training thing on here so maybe someone else can give a better answer :o

went to gym on sunday (maybe it was the london marathon (snickers:confused:) that inspired me!) for a workout. Started on treadmill at 12.5km at incline 0.5 for 3mins or so then pushed it to 13.3km at 1.0 incline for a remainder, was doing good then i started to get sore so had to stop, grrr. It was more psychological than pain I think! Ill beat it next time! ;) Did 2.50km in 11.30 mins or so. Need to work on endurance! Did 7 miles on bike after then did some weights and went home, arms were sore to hold steering wheel! Feel better now though! Maybe another one tomorrow! Bring it on! :D

you never know, it could be an old empty one, so with the lack of water all that brickwork and cement wouldnt be just as heavy!

just keep it going and youll be able to to more naturally. or see for the last bit of your run, do a sprint. i always leg it in the last stretch, its great for building up your muscle and it pushes you that little bit further.

also chops a few seconds off your time :P. it makes me think that ive done less work than i have to.

Make that, i'll not be running anyehere for a while, although with the amount of sweating thats done running for a well wouldn't be a bad thing really

I ate two 6-packs of dunkin donuts yesterday and i've not even started training yet, i think i'm just about at police level now!
I've heard a story from an old bobby - that if you can't eat as much as your sarge - you'll not be coming off any propmotion boards!
Skip the running guys and get munching!
