OK here's my attempt to be positive:)... from the weekender website:

    Good news for Sligo shoppers

THREE major high street UK retailers could be coming to Johnston Court Shopping Centre, Sligo in the coming months.

Advanced talks are underway between Johnston Court management and the three top UK stores.

“We are talking to some major players on the UK High Street. Though we can’t say who they are just yet. These retailers will all be excellent news for Sligo shoppers,” said a spokesperson for Johnston’s Court.

Meanwhile the Sony Centre in Johnston Court has shut but is due to reopen again in five weeks time under a new franchisee.

“Sony Ireland are very much committed to Sligo and to Johnston’s Court and will be relaunching the existing store under new management in the coming weeks.”

Pulse Accessories, located at High Street Sligo are to close their High Street unit and will instead reopen a bigger Pulse Accessories unit at Johnson’s Court.

Tom Tailor the German casual clothing brand, has closed all of its Irish shops including its store at Johnston’s Court, Sligo.

The brand’s Irish stores are part of the Ark Retail group, which has gone into liquidation.

I reckon it'll be a supervalu in the Quayside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

I'd say a SuperValu or Centra or something along those lines. Would also love a M&S in Sligo, it would bring so much more to the town as a lot of people seem to go to a town with M&S in it.

What is Sligo Freeze Chill, a place selling white goods?

I was baffled when I saw a sign saying Supermacs was opening in Castlebaldwin when I was driving through it a few days ago. I'm sure it will do well :)

It's a storage/collection depot for frozen products and a major distribution point. The building is gi-normous, with 8 loading bays for Haulage.

It won't be Aldi, they don't do shopping centre units. I've heard it's supposed to be M&S, but havn't heard any timeframe

Id be sooo happy if they open Mars and Spencer in Johnston Court! That would make my day!:D But otherwise there is not enough car parking spaces! Like today... I wanted to go and do some shopping in Tesco and town in general! You could not get a space at all which really pisses me off!

Don't know of the restaurant, maybe Supermacs?..I know of quite an innovative food project happening at the moment but not at liberty to say just yet.

There is a new place opening in Strandhill where Triskel was beside the Jade Garden Chinese above the Strand bar.
I think it's a seafood/steakhouse restaurant. Do you know what was on the menu AlmightyCushion?

Not a notion. I didn't even wish her luck with it, I felt a bit of a bastard when I realised that. It's only because I was hungover though. In case you're reading this printer lady who is opening a new restaurant tonight, best of luck with it.

Apparently Kevin the former manager of Instore said they were hoping to come back to Sligo to a different location, also Cost plus sofas are coming at the end of July and also Heatons are meant to be opening in Castle street.

How long ago did we hear the rumour of Heatons on Castle Street, although it has not been mentioned in a long time. Now that the development there is taking shape it might just happen....lets hope it does :)

Where are Cost plus sofas meant to be opening?

Im not sure where Cost plus are going, but when they opened in Carrickmines they took over the old Classic Furniture shop. Some department store are advertising for staff for their new store in Sligo and I think its meant to be Heatons.

haha no dont worry about it! :D

Anyway. the stores I would love to see in Sligo are "Marks and Spencers", "HMV"...

    M&S! *dream*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

M&S and HMV are just a dream I think, can't see them opening in Sligo anytime in the near future.
Pulse Accessories are opening where the Bag Shop was. Bit of competition now for Claires Accessories as they will be opposite each other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,085 ✭✭✭Xiney

Pulse & Claires don't really sell the same stuff though.

Claires is a lot more for kids (although if you can find something wearable in there it's probably dirt cheap)

it is not only kids stuff. one part of the shop is kids and the other one is just normal stuff for teenager, adults...

There is a new furniture store opening up in the Retail Park, guess it's good news.
Also M&S have enquired about opening a store there, which Jimmmy can't believe but it's true, however it was turned down and rejected :(

Was there official reasons for the application being turned down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

I think it was for the same reason as Argos not been allowed to open up there.

If Zavvi was a 2 floor unit, it would be perfect for M&S but it's probably a little bit to small as it is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭jazyguy

Do you know if the furniture store is Cost Plus Sofas? Which unit are they taking over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

It's going into where land of leather was. One of the lads in work told me there was a sign with the name of the shop that going in but I didn't see it and he can't remember the name of the shop.

Cost plus are advertising for staff on the net at the min so I guess its probably them. I was sure they would take over the old classic unit which is what they did in carrickmines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,797 ✭✭✭bobcar61

At least they are opening, good sign and good news on the jobs front :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭jazyguy

True. Im not so sure about Heatons anymore collins mc have pulled the add for staff from their website so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,659 ✭✭✭magnumlady

Not another furniture store. I think there are way too many of them in Sligo.
As I said on the other thread I think whoever turned M&S down needs their heads testing.
So many people losing their jobs and here is a company willing to come into Sligo and employ people but they get turned down.

If you do not want it, do'nt worry, it will probably close down like other ones which opened in Carraroe in recent years. I think any business which provides jobs is good, as long as it is in accordinace with the law ( and the county development plan). I hope they do well wherever they are. Its sad for people to see businesses closing.

Ret assured nobody turned down M+S coming to Sligo...in fact M+S would be welcomed with open arms if it ever came to Sligo. It may yet happen there are many possible sites which would be in accordance with the development plan and planning permission. All M+S have to do is make the decision to come and they will come. They came wihin walking distance of Enniskillen town centre, Galway city centre...lets hope they come to Sligo....it would help cement Sligo as the capital of the north-west. They would probably be here already if only Sligo had not been so badly planned with warehouse "retail" parks miles away from each other and the town centre, and for the fact the population is relatively small.

Yawn, we know where you stand on the retail park. No need to keep repeating your self.

Glad you adjusted your locations of M&S though.

yawn, the point is not what I think of Carraroe "retail" park or any other retail park elsewhere, its to do with planning permission / the county development plan and the fact there was never any question of M+S going to Carraroe, even if they wanted to.
Glad you adjusted your locations of M&S though.
do not know what you mean ; the locations of m+s are consistent.

I think the planning rule for Carraroe needs to be changed and quickly.
They need to look at Carrick put a supermarket there (any supermarket) and try and revive the retail park.
It's a crying shame to see all the empty units.
