    Think you're bad

It's actually Perlico and I'm over 5k from the exchange, but it's bad for 1Mb

Anyone any suggestions on a better provider who'll at least be able to give me a better upload speed evenif the download doesn't get much better. I notice the OP was getting .31 on a .89 dl and I'd give my right ball for that sort of asynchronicity.

Bear in mind I'm in a rural area and over 5k from the exchange.

Recently moved to eircom 7mb. Tested speed this morning was only getting downloads of 1.5 mb. Moved my router closer to the PC, speed improved:confused:

Still only half what I'm paying for

Korea Telecom, 40MB download....and cheap as chips!

Ireland and it's "knowledge economy" won't survive without proper infrastructure.

BT 8Mb has been under performing for the last couple of days.

Normally can pull 820mb/s most of the time, but recently been lucky to get 500Mb/s

    481380701.png

Normally resetting the WAG150N gets me back to normal, but not for a couple of days. Have also been on the 212.x.x.x and 213.x.x.x IP address more than normal.

    What's up?

I get accurate results with XP, but nonsense with Vista... actual download speeds are piss poor... still looking for a solution to this, I've tried various network card drivers, all with the same outcome... anyone else experienced (and fixed) this?

The Vista issues are down to b0rken / poor network drivers. Updates might fix it. Vista is not advisable anyhow.

thanks for the reply - I've tried a pile of different drivers, with no difference. The same bs results appear in Windows 7 too... I'd have stuck with XP, but my last laptop slid off the table, died for 2 weeks, then resurrected itself... amazing. So, I'm stuck with the better laptop now, but crappy speeds, and I guess I couldn't stay with XP forever anyway.

Will the Vista issues ever be fixed? I mean, it's been out for 2-3 years, you'd think they might have got round to fixing it... (UPC, I mean)

Vista will probably never be fixed. Every now and then M$ releases an operating system that is ..... nonsense.

The last one before Vista was Windows ME.

2k and XP were usable .. not that I use them. Windows 7 is still not final, so a lot of things will improve there, hopefully enough to live up to standards of XP.

Vista's not as crap as the press it got, if you ask me... certainly not SP1, and SP2 is out now too... ME - now that was a turd and a half...

btw, the same Vista laptop gets perfect speeds with Eircom in work, it's just UPC that's not playing nice...

It might be MTU based issues or whatever, but it's down to the network drivers. We did tests with a Medion laptop from Aldi, that was shipped with Vista .. on a 12 meg connection of ours.

Vista: 6 meg down, 1.5 meg up
XP: 10 meg down, 10 meg up
Linux: 12 meg down, 12 meg up

Go figure .. same laptop, same hardware, same internet connection.

Now, certainly SP1 and SP2 might have improved things, but M$ broke essential driver support when they changed underlying basics last minute before the release. This is also the reason for the lack of drivers or bad drivers. Essentially, where I'm saying it will probably never be fixed ... fully.

If I could remember how to install Flash player on Linux, I'd give that a shot! I have a copy of BackTrack3 floating around somewhere...

Try the Ubuntu Live CD. That might have Flashplayer installed by default and boots most modern hardware without the need to install.

thanks - downloading it now... heh, halfway decent d/l speeds (550kB/s)... actually, it tends to get better late at night... this is a hard one to figure out...

It depends on where the contention applies. If it's an issue at the point where you are, you always get crap connectivity.

If it's at the point, where you leave your providers network, it can change with the path you take. For example, that Ubuntu ISO, if you download it from the irish mirror, you'll get it from Heanet or maybe BT. And Heanet for example has a 10 gig port on INEX, UPC has a 1 gig port on INEX. Both of them probably not too busy.

While other destinations on the internet might look different.

Another example: speedtest servers. The Dublin, Cork, Galway servers are all reachable over INEX, however UPC only peers with very few there, while the Limerick one for most is via Cogent (check traceroute to the various servers). That can give you a mixed bag of results.

Galway one probably goes UPC -> INEX -> Smart -> ourselfes, which is a pretty decent route.

It's always a good idea to check against more than one server.

    Eircom 7Mb

    b3ts7p.png

Pretty happy with it, hovers around the 5-6Mb region. The only issue I have is the Cap. But after downloading several terabytes off Rapidshare this past year, I'm kind of sick of Downloading, so no biggie really.
