It seems these proud members of the diaspora thought that the Troubles are some kind of pitched, conventional war between the British Army and the Irish Defense Forces (which is what they thought the IRA was) over the past 30 years for the North! We just played along for the craic and promised to send them an "Uncle Bertie Wants You!" Poster when the "War" ends and we can f**k the Ration Cards in the bin

If you think that`s bad, my granny in Liverpool was too worried to go visit my cousin in Dublin because of the Troubles.

You didn't and I apologise for directing that at you.

When these September 11th carttons were being posted, I wondered what would have happned if someone photoshopped some of the Dublin/Monaghan bombing pics in a similar way.

apology accepted. i cant comprehend how anyone can find any tragedy like 9/11 funny, it is easy to know they were far removed from it.

this thread highlighted the ignorance of some americans towards 9/11 yet irony of irony some people have forgotten abour our very own 9/11

Plus regarding 9/11 . The public response to 9/11 and the Dublin/Monaghan bombings were quite different. 9/11 is no longer a tragic loss of life but is depicted as a unifying Americanism to support an unjust war. It is more a symbol of "somone ****ed with america and now we are going to make them pay" as opposed to "think of all the people who died, isnt it sad."

You are half right in that statement. 9-11 was a unifying moment after the Towers fell, but please don't think that any of those people were forgotten.

Coming from a family of police officers and fire fighters, it is very real to myself and my family.

Another ironic fact about 9-11 (and this thread), is that there were probably more Irish killed when the towers fell than the Dublin/Monaghan bombings.

Completely off topic of the thread .....but...

I read a study that said that 15,000 Americans were killed in car accidents as a direct result of 9-11.

Less people flying. More people driving. More people dying in car accidents.

And if you were to interview 300 Irishmen on the streets of Dublin, how many would remember the date? It happened much longer ago I will grant you, but its simply natural for people to stop thinking about these things. For the next 4 years after 9/11 its all we fcuking heard. Im sure many people simply switched off. I dont know. I wasnt in the country most of that time. But the media spin was that of fear mongering when people were just trying to get back on with their lives. How many of them honestly gave a sh!t 2 or 3 years later, and then 7 and 8 years later. Out of 300 million Americans. I couldnt tell you what month or year Katrina happened off hand either.

As for the 2004 elections, thats a clusterfcuk unto itself. The vote was close, especially in the Popular Vote. You can view the timeline here. Just 4 days before the booths opened, a new Bin Laden tape was also released. It gave Bush a sudden 6 point lead in the polls. Kerry was also weighed down by the Swift Boat controversy throughout the campaign and imo never really made a strong candidate.

Bit of a loaded survey with a rigged map tbh given he labeled Australia anything but Australia, among many other places on the map. I dont expect you to be able to point out South Dakota from memory either.

Hold on, so you actually think... its...NOT stupid for someone to look at a map, and see the words "North Korea" over Australia and then point to Australia when someone asks them where North Korea is? Are you really comparing one of the most recognisable continents, and probably the most recognisable country on the planet...with a state in the United States?

Jesus man, I know your american and all but...jesus..

Early you were daring people to show you an American that didnt know when 9/11 happened , your attitude was that it was a rare if not impossible to find. Now your making excuses as to why they wouldnt know. Bit of a U-Turn no?

& what makes it so stupid (Americans not knowing when 9/11 happened) is not only the fact that its only 1 of the biggest world events to happen in recent years, never mind just an American event, but the very fact that your country spammed about 9/11 none stop, 9/11 this 9/11 that, your country drilled it into the population and then used it as an excuse to blow up half the middle east and confuse Americans into thinking Iraq did it. Then these same people don't even know when it fecking happened. Its insanely stupid.

Never mind not even knowing the damn date.

I'm not too arsed with this whole arguement to be honest but the term "rigged map" is gas!

"You didn't even know where Australia was, you good for nothin' schmoe"

"That map was rigged mugsy... i swear.. please"

    "Rigged....why i oughtaaaa"

"Please mugsy the map was rigged i tellsya"

"Rigged.... that map was coshaaaa i tell ya coshhhaaaaaaa"

    "mugsy please...."

    "mugsy, no, no,"

"coshaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA............................Keep the change you dirty animal"

Recognizable to whom. I could argue Europe is more easilly recognizable. Australia as a country has almost zero impact on American culture. I have every faith with a proper map they might have pulled off such a harrowing feat but when youre being deliberately mislead is a bit of a farce. So you don't know off hand where Australia is, someone names it Korea and tells you to find Korea....
Similarly some people earlier in this thread failed to accurately cite on more than one occassion how many US states there are. Not something I hold against them. And I dont go around asking them to name all 52 states like an asshole either. I mean after all we are the most Recognizable World Leader  give me a break. Im not personally that fcuking vain and I dont give a **** how little you know about us (except of course when you are making these blatant attacks about my inferred intelligence)
Early you were daring people to show you an American that didnt know when 9/11 happened , your attitude was that it was a rare if not impossible to find.

I never said that. I asked for proof, and got a youtube video in return.
Now your making excuses as to why they wouldnt know. Bit of a U-Turn no?
Im not so stubborn as to not consider opposition. Dont be daft. Its fallacy to claim for 300 million Americans that we all rmember the date. However my own opinion is the number who dont know will be much less than this thread would lead us to believe. I apologize for any naivety in which I might have implied 0.00% of americans fail to remember September 11, 2001.

Anyway I was merely filling out my own counterpoint about the monoghan (sp?) bombings. So far we've proven 7 people don't know out of 300 million. As I've explained, I can see how that might have happened. That 7 people (though lets be very generous and call it 1% of the adult population, ~2.5 million) will have forgotten the date. How many of us remember the date of the terrorist attack that happened in london a couple years ago? I think it was 06? July? Couldnt tell you the day. Despite the significance of days in History (the fall of the Berlin Wall, Pearl Harbor, the Bomb Drops, D-Day, Landing on the Moon) These dates depreciate from common memory over time begining from the time they happen.
I've explained the rationale above. The event itself was important. The date not so much. I dont think personally it still has the same importance today.

the majority of the people in their country don't have a clue
Thats the kind of negative karma thats pissing me off in this thread. Try to get your head out of your ass for a minute and admit that on the whole, thats outright bs. Youre making a sweeping statement that over 50% of all americans have no idea wtf is going on. If you want to support that statement I expect you to do so with a survey of 300 million americans where 51% of them reportedly, have no clue. Otherwise, Im done here.

How can you look at an unmarked map/globe and not see Australia as being one of, if not the most recognisable countries on the planet...how?

Its ****ing HUGE, its a god damn continent ffs, its surrounded by sea, it borders no other countries, you can see exactly where it begins and where it ends and it has a distinctly unique shape!

It has nothing to do with how much the country has an impact on American culture and more to do with actually knowing wtf this planet we live on god damn looks like. I can't believe you are defending these people.

Not knowing where Australia is makes the person an idiot, but then pointing to it and saying its FRANCE North Korea and so forth doubles their stupidity. (not to mention while at the same time saying that thats where america should next invade (france) I mean holy fcking **** like???)

Similarly? Similarly????? That doesnt come CLOSE to comparing. Maybe if said person couldnt point out where the USA was on a map. And pointed to Africa cause USA was written over it....

Maybe if they couldn't name the current president of the US.

What???????? The DATE is part of the NAME!!!!!!! Hell the date IS the name. He asked the month and the day of the 9/11 attacks and they couldnt get it. Theres no excuse, NONE!

Well if the globe is unmarked, the technically its a landmass. Not a country. I still have an easier time distinguishing Europe however.

Laughing at the average American is just gutless European snobbery. As if half of the Europeans that point the finger are not cretinous, fat, wastes-of-space themselves.

However, it is a failsafe wind-up mechanism so it's not entirely without worth.

Your not serious are you? Regardless of whether the globe is unmarked or not Australia is one of the most recognisable countries there is. Also, no technically it's not just a landmass, it's still a country with a name, regardless of what the map said.

You clearly failed to understand the question as 61 million voters is not representative of the majority of the 300 million strong American population. It is also not a conclusion of them having no clue.
