This must be the rarest Original Irish car to still exist. Wonder who owned it and what the story behind it is?

Wow, never thought there were any in Ireland. Surely it must have been a government or presidential car?

Nope not a Government or Presidential car (check it out, they never bought anything that fancy). Could be a Diplomatic car? Anyone know where the reg is from? Could be a merchant prince from Cork or something??

I had heard that there were 4 in the country. I'm nearly sure that one was owned by the people behind Motor Services Limited on the Naas Rd. I'm sure Mercmad will shed some light on this. Cracking car, one Mr Jeremy Clarkson has one in his stable. I read an article on the restoration of his one. You'd want very deep pockets..

You could have bought an MB600 in the late seventies for £800. Brown metallic, UZU 600 I think was the reg, but don't hold me to this!

Something in my head is telling me that this is Eamonn DeValera's old car. I think I know someone that rented it once. I might be completely wrong though.

Motor Distributors Limited, Nass Rd, I'm sure had one and maybe still do, possibily a longwheel base model. The only one I saw in Ireland was I think owned my Tom Roche Sr of Roadstone back in the late 60's, early 70's. I recall hearing of an Irish guy in Germany or Luxemberg having one , Ollie...... something or other. Fantastic cars and something like only 2500 built.

Don't think so. I remember seeing Dev a couple of times when I was a kid and he was driven around in a black Roller, possibily a late 30's early 40's job. Also saw photos of him beside the car.

.................yes the current owner also owns Thunder raod, Bondi beach and one or two other places. He also had a lovely original 220SE Cabriolet.

This one was originally owned by MDL. The current owner had it shipped to a W100 specialist in the States where it was fully restored at a cost of over $100,000. It is a beautiful car, listed on the official registry and also in a large book published by Daimler A.G.

There were indeed 4 imported from new, but I believe a similar amount were imported unofficially when nearly new.

MDL still have a dark blue ( not navy) long wheelbase model which is in mint condition but rarely seen in public. I last saw it at the Trim show in about 1998, though I did arrange for a journalist in the MB Club to go and visit it last years. They also have an Irish reg'd Gullwing, though it was a later 70's import bearing a 70's number, but it still looks better than a "ZV".

I know of several imports that are currently in the Country and had the pleasure of an extended test drive in one about 2 years ago

great to hear the history on these important cars.
Does our MB specialist in Shankhil not have a charcoal grey Irish reg 600, or am I mistaken? A mechanic friend of mine owns an original Irish reg 300SEL 6.3, not a 600 but the same wonderful V8 engine, makes a good 2nd best Q-car.

I always love the story that Mercedes Benz had several mechanics on Full time employment, whose sole job it was to travel around the world fixing the air suspension on these beasts...

When I was last in Terry Jackson's in Shankhill about six years ago, there was one on a lift. It was getting a lot of work done. Memory is hazy now, but I was told that the brake overhaul alone had cost thousands.

Back in the '70s, I seriously considered buying that one for £800 and just parking it up. Probably would have cost me more than it's current value in storage costs alone by now....

...........yes I believe he has one and as far as I recall this one was also once owned by MDL. The story was that they lent it to an important customer who was having a lot of problems with his new car and wanted something a bit flash to drive.

Drive it he did, however he managed to damage the sump, oil leaked and he never noticed the oil gauge heading south. The engine developed a serious knock and the car was left parked up as folk argued over who should cover the costs.

Tony Canning and Terry used to swop stock from time to time and the car ended up with Tony, which is where I saw it. I believe he was quoting for, or helping with an engine rebuild. The car was looking a bit rough at this stage. That was about 8-10 years ago now and I haven't seen it since the work was done.

Glad to hear its still with us and in better health.

There was blue one at Mosney about 7 or 8 years ago, we let it out of a junction in Dublin and followed it, I remember it was putting out a lot of blue smoke.
