Yeah as the surfrunner said, stretch, I guess I should too! Drink and plenty carbs. I think bananas are good for potassium. Maybe I am bananas? Who knows? They're good slow releasers of energy too. See federer and nadal munching on them! Leave sufficient time after a meal, bout 30 mins. I did a 5 mile run the other day in 46mins, on road. Only intended to do 2 mile but I still felt go and just kept on running ( no forest gump comments!). You'll get there dibble, it might take a while but it'll be worth it.

A lot of people on here are training for cardiovascular fitness. Is anyone here training for size?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 160 ✭✭manaka

Im doing some weights as well but its pretty darn hard to add on mass. I need to eat like a horse and I dont have the time to eat 5-6 meals a day, do weights for hours etc Im 6'2" and 13 stone. Think its average for my height (anybody in the know let me know!). Id like more muscle. The cardio training is easy compared to it. Havent done the protein shakes, too expensive and not sure if they work? I use dumbell weights at home and do some pressups, sit ups, etc Results are slow!

That's a grand weight for your height. I'm only at the 6ft mark myself. I'm grand for the running/cycling, I'd do the odd race/triathlon :p I started doing weights in the gym a while ago - I getting bigger since I started lurking in the fitness forum - I started doing the things that the big guys do, like squats and deadlifts. Put on 4kg, hopefully another few to come :D

4kg not a bad gain! Must be bulking up good then!
Better pop in here more often like myself rosco! Maybe there should be something like a weekly posting of your running times or bench presses or combination of exercises. It can be a challenge to yourself and give you motivation to keep at the fitness. See if you can beat your own time at least. My time for a mile on treadmile is 7 mins. On road its 9 mins. Id probably beat it if I ran faster but if Im going for a 5 mile run I like to pace myself. Maybe my pace is too slow!? Maybe ill just go for mile run to see one day.
A good endurance exercise is to jog, sprint 30 secs, jog, sprint etc. Its a good test of endurance!
Scientific reports show that even thinking about exercise is beneficial to the body in a small way!!

I should be well up there then. Is a week too slow? (Not including breaks)

Ah whenever you beat it, post it Rosco. Or even post when you dont beat it. Maybe the wind was in your face or you had to stop and tie your lace!
Just a bit of fun motivation and something to keep the thread alive!

If theres equipment to be bought then Ill buy it. Remember sitting watching davina workout with a choccy biccy and cup of tea going "ooooohhh, that looks hard".... now banished to the garage with a plethora of other equipment any gym would be proud of. And dont even get me started on strictly come dancercise. I would have gone out today for a mini heart attack only the dog ate my trainers and the shops were closed.

Does that sound a wee bit like "sorry sir... the dog ate my homework"...

I like that last part :D

Ok, I'll go for a 5k run now, I'll post the times on a blog or something over on the fitness forum. Back soon... ISH!

edit: I'm a skinny whippit so any exercise results in some sort of gain haha

not overly worried about the fitness side of things myself, been properly exercising now for a few years so its a part of my routine, got myself down to a 7minute mile on most occassions which im pretty chuffed with. have left the weights alone for the most part recently as id like to maybe shift another stone, and obviously the old weight training was slowing this down in comparison to the running

Sweet Lord and the wee donkey. Took the trainers out for their initiation this evening. 3.5K in too embarrassed to say time. Mixture of walking running and crawling. I almost needed CPR. Please tell me this gets better. Someone? Anyone?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 160 ✭✭manaka

Maybe you need sweet JC and the wee donkey to carry you home!?? :D
We all got to start somewhere so dont be too embarrassed! You WILL do better Rosco! Was this on the treadmill or road/pavement/footpath/sidewalk/did i miss any!? I did some skipping the other day and its damn hard to keep it going for 10 mins! Its quite sore on the calves. Maybe I just need practice? Maybe ill skip in my mind now and it will help!

This was on a gravel trail. I'll swear two oldies lapped me and they were out for a leisurely stroll. Wake up call for sure. Need to work harder/better/faster. Ill keep on trucking and hopefully Ill grow to not detest running someday. If running in my mind counted I would be Paula Radcliffe. And tell me please. Why oh why is it that you meet people you have been avoiding, sorry, havent met for yonks when youre looking like a big tomato.

Started week two of the couch to 5K programe on tuesday, somehow I thought it would be a natural progression from week one to week two, no siree. Was much worse. Heading for the second run tonight, not looking forward to it as there's a gale blowing outside. I can see myself having to repeat a few weeks of it. Still if thats what it takes, then it'll have to be done. Whoever thought running for two minutes and walking for one repeated a few times could be so tough on the old body. Im determined to get through it though, so thats something I have going for me. I'll keep you posted on the progress. I look forward to the day I come on here and say 'ran 5k today, all uphill in 25mins no sweat'.:P

Good man yourself. Keep up the good work. It will get easier. I started off on this programme and eventually ran 2 marathons.

But when does your body stop hating you for torturing it? Night two of running/walking...

You're body will love you for it Rosco! You will feel more energised, feel happier and will have huge benefits for your health. Those legs will be toned like a...gazelle!?:P

I did a road mile today in 7mins 30ish seconds. Last quarter had an incline and I never once farted! I needed one to get up the hill! :D Then I kinda slowed down a bit after it for the remaining 2 miles. Roadkill not a pretty sight on the road, could see the poor buggars ribs, urgh. Yeah I had to look! Im not squemish anyways. Finished in 25 mins. Heart rate max was 180, average was 158 and was over 80% of my cardio zone. I had one of them heart straps on the chest and the watch on. Im taking this fitness serious!! I had to drive out to find where the mile was again as I forgot! It's the first telegraph pole after the little yellow house!! :D

When you are training, don't be doing it on flat roads. During your runs in GV you will be constantly up and down hills, some of them steep. So you need to get used to it. They are a killer!
