I can't believe I'm actually going to ask this but...is it weird that I find running on a treadmill really hard?? I went to the gym properly for the first time last night and for some reason I just can't run on it, it just feels really un-natural for me and I just couldn't get into the rhythm of it or something. Am i just a freak?

I don't like it either, but then maybe we are both freaks! To be fair though, I just never enjoyed running before, and when I go on treadmill I find it really difficult to even keep my balance. I've been going out running on the roads lately and am actually enjoying it, the time passes much quicker and it feels like a better workout than the treadmill. I've read somewhere (on these boards I think) that treadmill doesn't give all your muscles the same workout as road running. I recommend sticking to the roads, the scenery is better and they tell me fresh air is good for you! Anyway, enough of my rambling for tonight...

aye i thought it was just cause im really tall but i sort of swayed side to side on the treadmill so i didnt like it that much. plus outside you have a nice cool breeze!

Thank god I'm not the only one! I felt like a right idiot with all these people beside me running along at their leisure, gabbing away and watching the tvs with no problems and theres me stumbling and holding on to the railings, eyes transfixed on one spot just trying not to fall off the blooming thing!

Looks like it will help you coordination too! Ive nearly had a fall on the treadmill once, good job I caught the railing! Would have been disastrous! My face wouldnt be red from the running, it'd be from the shame of landing on my gluteus maximus ass!!

You will soon get use to it and get a rhythm going, PSNI once told me that its a good idea to test your endurance, jog for a minute then sprint for a minute or 30 seconds, its a real killer, make sure if you are using the treadmill you have time to slow it down, believe me!! The road is better, you can collapse in a 'hape'!

Keep it up, just do what it says on the tin, plug in and err..zone out!
It'll make you feel and look great. Ive more work to do on the latter! Ha

Yea it was me slabbering about Q/H ratios. Basically treadmills are completly crap, if you have no other choice put it to a 2 or 3% incline as this mimicks road running slightly better. Ive heard of people managing very fast times on a treadmill then completly blowing up as soon as they hit the road.

By the way on this 3 mile run we have to do, is it done as a group with an instructor pacing us (full metal jacket style) or is it just ready, steady, go and do a lap of a course as fast as you can?

I've been told it was in groups which should give some extra motivation, as they like people to work in teams and work together to make sure everyone gets round and encourages each other? Although maybe this was just my friend trying to reassure me as I will likely be the weakest link!!

I assume there will be instructors around the course to make sure nobody stops/walks... I'm actually starting to enjoy the running now, not up to full steam yet but getting there!

Utter nightmare! I had them about a year ago. Literally leave you crippled. As far as im aware they can be caused by a number of things. Mine were down to crap trainers with little padding and arch support. So a rest from running and some new trainers helped. They can also be caused by doing too much too quickly. i.e. not allowing your body time to adapt to the new regime.

As with any sports injury the acronim R.I.C.E (rest, ice, compression, elevation) is the starting point for recovery.

i went to the doctorabout them the other day! i originally thot they were muscle pain (some of them must be) but the doc said its actually fragments of shin bone embedded in ur muscle! when u jog or excersise ur muscle swells and the fragments jag into it causing the pain! i didnt really believe it but she ran her fingers down my shin and said she could feel the bumps where the fragments cxame a way from!!! i always just thot i had a bumpy shin!

dunno if this explains all shin splints or just some or if its even true. i do no that i was runnin the other day, golf course, beach and road and i got severe ss and couldnt move. it literally crippled me! i was doin a good time! as for the treadmill im probably one of those stories cpn heard about! u build up false speed on the treadmill but i really enjoy it! shin splints were fine on the treadmill!

    hey guys

quick question. someone who is currently in the hotel could help me out or anyone of some knowledge of gv. when we are in garneville what is the policy on injuries during training. is this grounds for fail or do they allow for this sort of thing? any help would be much appreciated, cheers

i know of a girl who broke her leg during her training at Garnerville and she was deferred and given the best of treatment, and able to go and restart her training. think once your in there you're pretty well taken care of so I'm told.

friend of mine who has been servin for 4/5 years injured her leg whilst trainin and was back squadded! didnt mention any problems obout gettin chucked out! also it tells us on our sheet that we should registar temporarily with a doctor in belfast as injuries will occur!

i think if ur badly injured u will be put out untill u heal and are able to go back and finish training but i would expect it to be unpaid!

thanks for replies guys, thats good to hear that they look after you. they obviously know injuries are going to occur and im glad they dont expect us to be robocop. just puts my mind at rest that you are able to be allowed to finish the training if you are unfortunately injured. fingers crossed that i can stay injury free if i get the opportunity to partake in the training

If you are injured on duty or in training you still get paid. Depending on the extent of your injury though you will most likely get back squadded until you're back up to par. So nowt to worry about except staying in one piece and enjoying your training.

what if u are unable to return to work?

Do you mean if you sustain an injury that would make you unfit for the job, ever?

Theres a couple of possible ways that could go. You could be medically discharged from the service, but its also very possible that they could try and place you elsewhere, back in a Civilian role, in an admin capacity or something along those lines, providing you were fit to carry it out - and all that would be assessed by OHW. Theres no hard and fast solution to that one, it would very much depend on the individual. But from what I've seen the service is very good at looking after its members and they do try to get you bak to work in some capacity, even if its reduced hours or in an adjusted role. But again, it wold all depend on the nature and extent of the injury.
    Hope this helps.

I've just started that myself. I hate running with a passion but this wee programme looks the best way to get into it.

Not too fond of the running myself, prefer cycling but im sure they'll hardly let me scoot round the GV course on my bike(if im lucky enough to make it that far). But like you say the programme looks like a damn good way to get into it. Thank God it was raining as it kept me nice and cool:cool:

I've downloaded a series of podcasts to get me through it. If you google it you can find some, basically its a voice over to music and it'll tell you when to start/stop walking and running.
The only bad thing about the one I've downloaded is that its voice over is by some annoying American chick, like totalllyyyyyy, but the music mix is good. Sommat about good old rap and hip/hop will help you to move you move yo ass mo fo!!!
