so does anyone wanna answer the question? If your ps3 is out of warranty, how much does it cost to get it fixed. Nobody seems to wanna answer it.im sticking with me xbox360

It cost me €250. Damn thing broke down the day after the warranty expired.

Mine broke this morning :( The missus put her new Tomb Raider I got her for crimbo in it and she woke up me saying nothing was happening!

After searching the web and stuff, it just appears I'm another victim of BROD.

I have the 60GB original from day one (sometime in March / April 2007 - can't remember)
Symths said its out of warranty and didn't want to know, we rang the Sony PS3 helpline and they were very helpful, but still a little vague.

They said its €15 to pick it up (Living in Ireland by the way) and that it will be sent to a Sony repair centre who will take a look at it. What I'm a little unsure about is this 2 year EU warranty? I've never heard of this, this will obviously mean its still under guarantee and should be fixed for free. (can somebody please confirm)

Also, I read there are mixed returns, e.g. some people get a 40GB, some get a refurb 60GB. To be honest, I'd prefer a referb (or new) 60GB model as its far superior with the extra USB, Backward Compatability, card readers etc... The man on the phone said something about Sony having a backup stock of 60GB for these kind of requests (cos they don't make em anymore) and they will prob ring us and offer us either a 60 Refurb or different model. But I have to wait on that as I only rang about an hour ago!
If not, I think I will argue and tell them I want the 160GB model minimum as its only €450 for that and I paid €650 for the 60GB, so if they don't give me a refurb the least they can do is give me the latest and greatest model as I paid so feckin' much for it originally!

Anyway, thats my story, if this thread is still alive when I hear back from the Sony people I will continue and let you know how I get on...

also anybody who had refurbs, do you get your original hard disc back with all your saved games and stuff on it... Oh, and would you suggest I delete all my "backed-up" :D movies on the drive before they pick it up???

    Thanks,
    DG.

First off. I have heard people solving this problem by reformatting their HDs.

I think the 2 year thing is a bit hit and miss. I mean quote it, threaten them with it etc but I am unsure about the legalities (I mean who has to proof what).

Finally, I think you will have to take what you are given. If you manage to get a PS3 out of them-I'd say you can forget about it being a 60GB nevermind a 160gb.

No, you get a different ps3 with a different hard drive. Back up all your data to an external HD and then format the ps3 before you send it back.

My 40 GB is fine since I got it last March.

I'm trying a full format restore as I type this, its estimated at just over 3 hours...

A funny thing is, what I noticed is the PS3 remote control also stopped working? (and I changed the batteries!) I'm wondering if some corrupt files are causing this issue as some forums have mentioned... have to wait and see!

And it was only last week when I updated to firmware 2.53, but that could just be a coincidence?

On a side note, its gas how technology gets better, but its life expectancy drops. I had some of the missus kids cousins stay over and they wanted to watch a DVD in bed, but we only have the PS3 in the sitting room, so remembered there was a PS2 up in the attic thats been there gathering dust since the PS3 hit the shelves... needless to say, I plugged it in, threw in a DVD and not a bother with it, worked like it was spanking new... and thats been going strong for about 6+ years... ah well!

Too true!!! it's the manufacturer's that do that! They don't make 'em to last any more, coz if they did then we wouldn't need to go out and buy replacements for the goods!
    *cough DELL cough cough*

    Update:

Had to take PS3 back to smyths as Sony said they would replace it. They gave us a ref number, we took it back and to my surprise they are going to replace it with another 60GB. He said they didn't have any in, but to come back next week as they getting a shipping of them in as there a few after breaking. I was delighted... I was ready for a fight if they offered me a 40GB version. Way to go Smyths :D

Good for you ,the 60GB is going for £600+ on amazon

I think the most likely cause of the problem is probably due to people playing games on it for 5+ hours or so each day.

I'd say the players were designed to run for 3 hours at a time and not 5 or so. I hope the problem isn't widespread and I'm guessing it isn't.

I have a 80GB one and I use it every day although mostly for streaming, the odd movie and games every so often. Just hope it doesn't break because I love it so much :D

It is noticably better built than 360 just to touch and even the look of the thing looks better quality so I imagine they are built to last a good while.

I don't think Sony are making enough of the sales of consoles to build them to fail. I mean if the launch consoles broke after a year or so, they'd probably have still lost money on the replacements those people would have bought.

I didn't play mine for anything like 5 hours a day, but I could be in the minority.

    40GB, all clear.
you have to realise that the 40gb is the most popular ps3. so more ppl would have the 40 than the160

    +1!!
You are dead right, AFAIK, they were making a loss on each PS3 from R&D, manufacturing, etc.... And their profit comes from the games when they're released. I'm not sure if this is still the case as they did stop producing the 60GB to cut costs and all..

    Just a quick one.

My brothers PS3 stopped playing some discs and games.Bought in April 2008 in Gamestop. He rang them and they said they`ll get it repaired.

Surely if he has the receipt hes entitled to a new one??Can anyone confirm that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,707 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I believe it is at the retailer's discretion (repair or replace).

Maybe ringing Sony would have been better? They may replace it and they may be quicker.

Of course they may just send you back to the shop.

Usually kicking up a fuss and saying you want a new one will get you one.

Basically annoy them into it being less hassle to give you a new one over whatever crap they might get for giving one to you.

Do people actually stick their old PS1 games into their PS3? I always keep my game discs as clean as I can but there's no way I'd risk it on a €400 console designed to play Blu-ray.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,707 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I am a bit like that myself if I am honest. I mean some of my old PS1 games are not in the best of shape. I still have a ps1 tho so it is not a big deal.

I almost feel the same way about watching blu-rays on it tho. Always the fear you are straining the laser or decelerating its lifespan.

I think I am just some kind of hypochondriac though.

Didn't get a reply from the email so just rang the support line there,
The fella said it wouldn't be a problem and didn't mention anything about a warranty.

Just have to wait till friday and go into xtra vision with the reference number and broken ps3 and the replacement should be there!:D

It's actually surprising how cooperative Sony are being with the matter. Usually when this kind of thing happens, companies are very reluctant to help. Probably don't want too much attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,532 ✭✭✭Unregistered.

But it aint just any company..... This is Sony Computer Enetertainment Europe!

Edit: Dunno why I needed to say that..
Anywho... IF their motive for being co-operative is for anything other than to keep consumers happy the it is because(and I've said this before), Sony actually make a loss on each PS3 they sell. They need people to have their PS3's working so they will buy games, where they make their money. Not sure if things have changed since the introduction of the 40/80 gig models, but the losses were significant!

This happened to me today. 80GB unit that I just had before Christmas in a LBP bundle from Xtravision, don't know what the story is.

I do use it every day but don't see the reason for the failure as it only on for the length of a movie or a game.

Its still under warranty at least and I have a receipt.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,656 ✭✭✭norrie rugger

there should not be a problem with warranty though, should there?

there is enough evidence to show that this issue is inbuilt from the factory, that give you evidence to inforce the European warranty of 5 years no?

There is a growing level of failures yet there is not much being said about this, as Sony are replacing the units as they go down. The have completely smothered the situation. Compared to MS who had to do a fairly big climbdown on the XBox and got massive negative press.

    fingers crossed on my machine.

You'll probably find it'll be a class action lawsuit if they didn't smother it the way they are. Seems to be the only way the big corporations face up to known issues. I worked for a computer company in tech support for a few years and one particular laptop had a dodgy graphics card which gave up the ghost after about 12-14 months. The amount of people we refused to help as it was out of warranty (under instruction) was unbelievable. Then there wass a class action in the US and all of a sudden there was a 3 year warranty introduced and all previous repair bills were refunded.

I agree with all sides of the debate that has been going on, and understand that this is just a survey to see what the general consensus or experience had been.

I know that if enough internet forums are misinterpreted, it's not long before the mainstream press might get on to the trail of it and try to make a story. Best of all would be when the internet goes crazy and takes something like this out of context that DaPoolRulez intended.

For example - take an innocent quote from earlier in the thread and use it out of context and then over react.

OMG - that means that 75% of PS3s do break!!!!

Now, I know I'm being silly here - sorry if it hijacks the thread down another path ...
