Why are people still hanging around with the stingy bastards? Myself and my mates would never stand for someone not paying their own way and they wouldn't be talked to again.

If i see someone repeatedly dodging giving rounds the next round i buy will be 1 drink less. I also tell them to get the drink themselves or GTFO.
I have no time for those leeches.

I was shocked over the xmas when out drinking with a group. I thought it was my round... but it turned out it wasn't as there was a couple who actually didn't consider themselves a single entity in the round system.

*has never paid for a haircut cuts his own
*buys all his toiletries in the euro shop
*has the smelliest toothbrush about 5 yrs ive thrown it in the bin a number of times but yesterday as i was cleaning out the bathroom cabinet i found it covered in grey mouldy tooth gunge so hed taken it out of the bin and used it
he actually had no toothbrush for a while and my sister caught him using hers:eek:

What's wrong with cutting your own hair?
So what if you don't tip?
Big deal you don't want to put money into the charity envelope that goes around every 20 mins in work?
What's wrong with getting a 10c tip? So what if you didn't get the 20c .. .at least you got something.
What's wrong with Dunnes / Tesco bread?
So what if your deoderant only cost €2?

I know someone who collects freebie stuff during the year and then gives it as christmas presents, Christmas just gone I got a 2008 diary that I had given them last year it had my workplace logo on it, other previous presents were a Jameson plastic measuring cup (off the top of a bottle). I was also given a game disc that came free with rice krispies.......there is tight and then there is just taking the wee wee.

I've rarely enjoyed a thread this long but this is something of an exception. Some hilarious stuff.
In Cork I have often seen 4/5 Spanish or Italian students sitting in a bar around one glass of guinness for hours on end...and literally staring at it as if it is going to start doing headstands...:)
Ah yes, I'm currently working part-time in <nameless college bar>. We're very quiet some Friday nights so some weeks we'll just shut up early. Quiet annoying when a small group (always the same group) comes in late the odd Friday night, buy a pint of black between them and sit around it while playing connect 4 for an hour or two. Small allowance for poor students though.

Have to say though, that the odd time your actions might be interpreted as stinginess when it might just be weirdness. I was over in the Canaries a few years ago with a big group and between my then-girlfriend and her sister taking ages to get ready, most of the group had gone off somewhere so the three of us decided to go for something to eat. Being male and me, I just wanted ice-cream. Girlfriend just wanted soup. Her sister hadn't eaten so wanted something proper. You can see where this is going. Small run of the mill openair food place, we order what we wanted (one soup, one main course, two desserts for me). They found it funny, especially delivering the three courses at once. Even put sparklers on the ice-cream. We were drinking beer as well though so I can only assume they thought we were just really odd.

Me Da used to tell me about his former neighbour, an old typical country farmer. He used to soak turf before burning it so it would burn very slowly (not even burn just smoke really) and the worst part of it was they lived beside a bog. Also this guy went to bury a sheep one frosty winter morning. The ground was obviously rock solid so he dug the whole about 3 feet, filled it in, and left the sheep on its back with its legs sticking up out of the soil :P Not really stingy just lazy I suppose

Well as a man from farming stock I'll tell ya there's no digging much of a hole in frozen earth. You'd want a decent crowbar (proper farm one, not a burglars jimmy) to loosen up the ground before you start belting away with your mattock.

    Hahahahahaha that's gas

One of my OH's mates is really stingy. He invited us all over to his for a Christmas dinner but told us all to bring the food. When everyone said no, he just cancelled it.

When his ex over and they were getting a takeaway, he would order one starter and one main and they'de share (his GF at the time was just as bad)

If he was out with the work crowd for lunch, he would claim he had no cash on him so everyone would round up their costs - say a set meal for €12, every chucked in €15 - and throw in the cash. He would wait til everyone left then pay for it on his credit card and keep the cash (and tips) for himself

My wife just told me about when she was going to college in Galway, she had a part time job at a bakery/cake shop. 4 middle aged American women come in, enquire about the price if a particular piece of cake / bun. 20 minutes of " How much is that one? repeated over and over again, they eventually settle on a Chester Cake which was the size of a small bun for 11p. Wife asks how many, they reply just the one and could they she cut it into 4 pieces for them.

A certain nameless college bar of my aquantance used to shut up early whenever it suited them and i couldnt get a drink after work if i'd been working late.

Some people aren't made of money. It's similiar to inviting your mates round for pints and telling them to bring their own beer. It's not a charity people are running.

Don't invite him next time. Was the service really good enough to warranty a 20% tip though?

I currently live in student accomodation in Germany and I have seen some stingy ****.

Sharing a toilet with twelve people its normal to go out to the toilet or kitchen and find that the light bulb has been stolen.

Not sure if this is stingy or just weird but we live near Aldi. It's walking distance. The chinese guy down the hall from me has got about four shopping trolleys in his room with clothes folded inside them as well as books.

Not gonna believe this one but my friend was talking to me and asking did I see his t-shirt(with mickey mouse on it) he left it down in the laundry room while waiting for his turn to use the washing machine. Described it and had a look to see did I have it in my pile. Wasnt there. Were sitting drinking a few beers about 2-3 nights later and watching football on tv when the chinese guy from down the hall with all the shopping trolleys in his room walks in wearing it and starts putting his stuff in the fridge.Nothing was said

The marking on the milf bottles and fanta bottles here is hilarious and annoying. I've had countless bottles of Fanta and Coke and my loads of times ha my canned Jack Daniels and Coke vanish.

We have free washing machines and the house across the way has to pay 20 cent or something to wash there clothes for some weird reason. The result is that all those people wash their clothes in our machine.

Also in Germany you get 15c for every bottle you bring back to the shop. I dont do this as I've too many bottles and its a bit heavy to walk all the way to the supermarket. I jsut recyle them free in the bottle back across the road. One time I got home from a party at about 3am on a friday morning and our chinese friend was outside with a putting superglue on a tree branch taking bottles out of the recyling bin. not sure if this is stingy or a good idea?

We all share a hoover. There are two. One of them has tippex or paint on it saying it is property of some library.

In Germany they have Cafeterias run by some student body. We dont really have it in Ireland but you go in and you get food on a tray rather than a plate. Somebody has brought four of these home.

Alot of our glasses are from the bar across the road and I wonder if its a co incidence that the toilet paper we use is exactly like the commercial rolls all over the university I attend.

We had no tv in the common room because we didnt wanna buy one. There are 24 of us so if we all put in a tenner it would be cheap. But instead someone liberated one from a skip that was here back in December.

Theres tonnes more of this sort of thing that I cant even think of!

I used to wipe my ass with college note books - i think that this was more to do with my preference for a can of cider than blow a pound on stupid stuff like jacks paper
btw people used to keep their jacks paper in their rooms all for themselves, i'd wipe my ass with any towels left hanging around the toilet - nice one

I used live wth 3 other guys.

In August, 1 of the guys (An Aussie) was leaving to go to Japan for work

1 of flatmates (Another Irish) asked the Aussie to pay for his share of the going away drinks!!
Only came to about an extra €12 or something small each!!

I paid for the Aussie: thought that was a bit harsh to pay for your own going away drinks...

In my experience, aussies are extremely tight when it comes to buying drinks. One guy who used to work with me would go out to all the drink sessions and NEVER bought more than a glass of 7up for himself.
he was quite happy to wave the empty glass in your face when you were going to the bar and say "oh i'll have a jd and coke".

Yep, I worked in a hotel that was across the street from a courthouse once. Being Irish, I wouldn't be used to my fellow countrymen (or women) giving tips.

I would often tot up the bill for political party functions or gatherings of legal types. I would often have been serving them attentively for most of the afternoon and evening, and sometimes a good bit after I should have been.

In every single case I can remember, no matter if the bill €50 or €500 or over a thousand on a couple of occasions, it was always paid to the cent.

People serving them were very rarely acknowledged, never mind thanked.

I don't think people are automatically entitled to tips or anything, but if I receive good service from people who show some pride in their work, I am more than happy to tip.

Worked with a guy ger on a site who was wearing a pair of safety shoes his oul lad wore in the corpo 10 years previous. The soles were right through and he used wire to tie them up. He refused to buy a new pair of boots for work even after the lads screwed them to the canteen ceiling and sprayed them red!! One friday he didn't come in some one of his "mates" got out the con-saw and cut them in two, then poured petrol on them and burned them. He got one of the boys to film him with his phone. He met ger on saturday and showed him the video. He went nuts cause he had to go to dunnes and spend €25 on a new pair!!

i do that myself. no shame in it either. i could get mobile internet for 10e a month and i often do but its still slow as ****e compared to someone elses wireless network. so even if i paid the 10e that month and there is a wireless network i'll use it

my phone has wifi so i can also call people for about 2c a minute on it. when i was in england i would often walk to residential areas to find wifi so i could use that instead of paying the 20 or 30p a minute those rip off english networks charge

Went to school with a few people who went on holidays together there recently (3 girls, 2 guys). One girl used to take note of how much her drink cost in rounds, and as it was cheaper at the end of the night she'd ask for her 'compensation'. Yeah? Ok, fair enough you could argue. But what I thought was worse:
Y'know when your mate, like a really good, good mate says "lend me a euro". You give them the euro or two or whatever and it's forgotten about? Not if you have a notebook and are taking down - to the CENT - what you've loaned to people.

    Honestly!

Small shop in Naas. Main street.

Student special for sandwiches. EUR 2 each.

Two schoolboys walk into the shop. Brothers. One is about 8 or 9, the other 6 or 7. They buy one sandwich. The woman is about to wrap it and the boy asks 'can you please cut it in half'. She does that.

The boy brings the sandwich to the counter clutching a two euro coin and the following conversation ensues:

    "Four euro please"

    "But I've only one sandwich."

"You've two there. Two sandwiches. Four euro."

"But I just got this cut in half."

"Four euro. Come on, I haven't got all day."

The boy looks at his brother and puts his hand in his pocket. He makes up the remaining two euro in assorted change.

The owner counts it and doesn't say thanks.

When the two of them get outside the older one unwraps the sandwich, tears off some tinfoil and gives half of the sandwich to his little brother. They walk off in opposite directions.

Since then the witness (a work colleague) and me refuse to shop there.
