As it's coming to that festive, shopping filled time of year again I'll add a reminder.

It is *not* permitted to seek/give advice on how to avoid customs/taxes etc on this forum.

If your into comedy, as a tip I would say try and get your hands on the free audience tickets for 'Late night with Conan O Brien' on NBC.you can phone 0012126643056 a few months in advance to check avalability. It tapes at 30 Rockefeller Centre at NBC HQ every evening, and between the audience warm up comedians and Conan himself, it's more entertaining than going to a Broadway show in my opinion.

Flew out on Wed US Airways to Philly (collected by friends) but went to NY. All the flights from dublin to NYC cleared immigration in dublin. Dont eat in dublin airport. Before flight two breakfasts and two ballygowan waters in the food court upstairs 31 euro. I nearly choked and it wasnt on the food!

Queues were massive at immigration in Dublin but its still worth it. At the other end, they just usher you past immigration.

While in NY I did the grey line, south manhattan tour. $39 hop on hop off. Again well worth it. Did some serious shopping at the outlets but stayed within my luggage allowance. Sweating a bit on arrival back in Dublin, but mixed up the red and blue channels so had no problems. Never noticed till I thought about it later on the quickpark transfer bus.

Sorry :o Feel free to edit this out, but I am presuming that if you come from outside the EU that the first EU country you disembark in is the country your meant to pay the VAT in? Therefore when disembarking at Dublin you go through the Blue channel rather than the Green channel where all the customs people are?

I am not trying to avoid customs, if they nab me they nab me and i'll pay the VAT here. Its just this was my first time flying direct.

    It all depends.

If your bags have been checked through, you shouldn't go through the blue channel. If you collected your bags and checked in again, then you may use the blue channel.

Blue channel is for arrivals from another EU country, Green for everyone else, red if you have goods you want to declare to customs.

www.hostelworld.com has buckets of manhattan hostels with plenty of reviews for each. If you register first as Irish, then you should get an option to avoid booking fees.

Hi, thanks for replying I appreciate the feedback. Booked the Club Room for both of us and it seems to be nice enough. Will post my review upon my return.

Just had 6 nights there, its very central and very accessible both for bus at port authority and its right on a subway stop for A C E trains. They have the lounge for brekkie which is cereal and pastries and they have coffee and biscuits up to midnight to go with the internets. Basic and clean although as already stated, dated.

    Hi all,

I will be travelling to New York next week. I am a bit confused about the tipping situation over there.

Who do I tip and who don't I tip?? I get the impression they tip every person they pass on the street over there! haha

Also, I am hearing from some people that its 10% and others that its 15%!!

I know you are supposed to tip taxi drivers, bar staff, waiters etc! But do you have to tip staff in a shop, staff in McDonalds, Starbucks etc??

Its not that I don't want to tip its just all very confusing for somebody not from the United States!

    Thanks

10% is a reasonable benchmark and if you really like the service it's up to yourself if you want to give a bit more. A nice little number to know is about "buy backs" in bars of New York. I'm not sure if it's in every bar but it was in a lot of the ones i frequented.

Basically if you're planning a night out in a bar then give a dollar tip for every time you order a round of drinks. After a few turns the barman will certainly be over to you first and eventually will give you a round of drinks on the house. like i said it might not be in every bar but i often found it to be the case. Just make sure he/she knows it was you. You'll love New York. An adventure every day

If in a restaurant and the bill does not include service already, the right tip to leave is usually by doubling the tax amount on the bill.... Only tip in places with service. McDonalds you dont tip for example. Starbucks usually has a tip-jar if you want to leave your change.. not necessary though.

In a bar its a dollar tip per drink. If you order a round of 5 drinks, you leave a 5 dollar tip. Most smaller bars do employ the buy-back system, particularly if you are sitting at the bar...

Going over with my boyfriend after Christmas for a week and we're staying with family of his.

It's his birthday while we're there though so I was wondering if anyone could suggest something special to do - restaurant (we did Jules Verne in Paris for example a couple of years ago for his birthday), event, or maybe even nice hotel to stay in for the night... Anything at alL!

Cheap/expensive I'll take all ideas! If it's something cheap and cheerful I'll just buy him a present as well!

    Get Letterman tickets
And then wander down to the hotel (Marquis I think?) with the revolving restaurant/lounge for a few cocktails

When I was there during the summer I got tickets the day before by going to the theatre. If you are only there for a few days though it might seem like a waste queuing for an hour or two for tickets.

hopefully should be suprising the other half with tickets to new york for his birthday so trying to get my head around some kind if itinerary. is niagara that far away that i could make a decent trip to it but still do all the other touristy things in the city?i'd have about ten days to fill (though i'm sure that won't be hard) taking into account missed days through flights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭bills

yeah its definetely possible especially if you have 10 days. We flew to toronto & spent a few days there. We spent a day going to niagra falls & stopped in niagara on the lake- a lovely picturesque town not like niagra town where the falls are- thats full of casinos etc. There's loads to do in toronto itself too- cn tower, eaton centre & casa loma.

Did the Knicks and Utah on my visit last month, register on their website and you can get tickets for 10 dollars for lots of home games. Would highly recommend it as an activity, most enjoyable.

I would Highly recommend doing the Sightseeing Tours in New York...one of the companies i know off hand is gray Line...they operate the Open Top Red Double Deck buses going round the city. They are hop on-hop off so you can come and go as you please. They sell tickets all around the city..the most visable place is around Times Sq area with their agents going around. You can usually get added value trips around the city and extended for 48hours vs the original 24hrs paid for. The City by night tour is definately worth it. Probably pay about 90 Dollars for the 2 of you for a 48Hr tickets that does the Uptown , Downtown and Night tours. Good value.
I think gray line also operate day tours and maybe 2 day tours between New York City and Niagara Falls. You should see everything from their site...http://www.grayline.com/Grayline/destinations/us.aspx

A week in New York, flights & accommodation in a decent hotel, what are we talking price wise?

I did it this January and I think it was 900 each, the hotel was decent as in similar to Jury's. January is the cheapest timeto go generally, will get more expensive in later months.
