Heading over on 9th Dec for 5 days. Can anyone recommend a good Santa? My 10 year old still believes & as this may be the last year she does, would like to treat her to a special Santa visit while we are there.

I think Macys has the most popular one. Its a mob scene so I avoid it like the plague. I took my son to Bloomingdales, 7th floor to visit Santa [who is Irish there, doing the 12 Steps of Christmas lol], not a big deal, but a Santa nonetheless.

    here are some more:

    hey all..

I stayed in the Pennsylvania 2 years ago, i remember it being dinging but great location and really cheap. (it'll be €600 each for 5 nights)

I recently read on trip advisor about someone that had a camcorder robbed from their room and when they told NYPD, they said the hotel was known for robberys.

Has anyone heard of this hotel having a bad reputation?

Im not stupid and wouldnt leave anythin valuble in the room, but i plan on shopping, so there might be gifts and clothes in the room while we're out and about.

    thanks

Pennsylvania is so big that it'd be impossible to say who should or shouldn't be in the hotel. I've stayed there before and had no problems whatsoever. I'd imagine that robbery was an isolated incident.

From what I remember the key to the Pennsylvania is to ask for a renovated room, as the old rooms can be hit and, more likely, miss

I'm heading over to NY in March so I emailed a few friends asking for advice on where to stay. One friend in particular works with some people that have been to NY loads of times and this is what they said about the Pennsylvania, "Everyone agrees that you don’t stay in the Pennsylvania, its meant to be a right kip (a lot of irish stay there)"

But having said that, you could stay in the best Hotel in the world and have stuff stolen, especially if you're not careful.

Has anyone ever travelled to the states with this airline, as they are doing very cheap flights to NYC in June, but I have never travelled with them before. Just looking for some feedback...

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,634 Mod ✭✭✭✭dory

The Ryanair of long haul travel as far as I know. Bare bones type of airline. Don't expect too much comfort or free earphones. My friend flew with them, wasn't a great experience but if got her over here on the cheap.

United don't really fly into NYC all that much - certainly not transatlantic.

They do codeshare with Aer Lingus however - so if they have her flying Dublin to NY direct even with a United Airlines flight number on the ticket, it'll be on an Aer Lingus plane with Aer Lingus crew and Aer Lingus service :)

Thanks for the replies, its working out very cheap from Dub to NYC, we would normally do Continental which will work out at €1555 for two adults and one child (which is cheap) but skytours/United Airlines on the website Momondo is working out at €1100 for all three of us too.

Aer Lingus is pretty good at mo [haven't read previous posts so I don't know if they've been explored already!]

The excat same flight is €1600 with Aer Lingus, so its a big difference

Hey, I booked the Amsterdam court hotel in new york. It was very reasonable, just under 600 for 6 nights for double room. Has anyone stayed there and know what it's like?

Are the New York airport to city trains as easy to navigate as other cities like say...London?

I just used these trains a few days ago. I cant compare to London, but i've found them to be really easy.

You get the AirTrain from any of the terminals to the subway station, and from there it's a straight run into the city. Should take about an hour total and only costs $7 ($5 for AirTrain and $2 for subway). Tickets are easily purchased, and when i went through there was loads of staff around who seemed helpful,

If you're not in a major rush it's prob better than a Cab which will cost you about $60 to Manhattan,

Yeah, the cab route looked mad expensive...the trains in London, for example, are dead simple. Like, you'd have to be stupid to get lost in a London airport while looking for a train to the city centre.

    Thanks chalad.

I've done Newark to Penn Station, it cost $15 and was easy and quick - there's a mono-rail from the airport to the train station - you then get the train straight to Penn Station - there is a Penn station in Newark so once you know you're heading to NY you're fine.

Heading to US and A in a few weeks and squeezing in a 3nt trip in the Big Apple. Never been before but booked Red Roof In Manhattan on the back of good reports on here (not expecting luxury, just cheap + central).

This thread has been most helpful so will chime in more when I get back :)

If anyone needs to know the best way to get to places in New York by subway/air train use www.hopstop.com. It's brilliant.

Also works for Boston, Chicago, San Fran and a few other cities.

i had hoped to go to a couple of gigs while in new york but both gigs have sold out. has anyone ever successfully got ticket returns from the venue on the day or not been totally ripped off by scalpers outside? venues are bowery ballroom and union hall (brooklyn).

Any suggested plans to see New York? I'm there for 9 nights/8 days.

I'm thinking something along the lines of

Day 1 Saint Patricks Cathedral - Radio City Museum of Modern Art -Times Square (Night)- Rockefeller Centre Sunset

Day 2 Rockefeller Centre Sunrise - Penn Station - Grand Central Terminal - Times Square (Day) - United Nations Building - South Street Seaport

Day 3 Ground Zero - Battery Park - Irish Famine Memorial - Free Staten Island Ferry - Walk Brooklyn Bridge Into Manhattan

I'll fit the three of these into the first three days or so. Central Park - Guggenheim Museum - The Met

I've Knicks tickets and if the Giants make the Division Finals I'll have tickets for that as well. Any other recommendations barring the usual Woodbury/Jersey Gardens?

    Thanks

Just back, you'll have a ball.

NBC studios were great - The tour video is on youtube. Tour well worth doing, you must book. Can also book one of their shows (free) didnt get to do that meself.

Sept 11 museum / visitors centre worth a visit.

Ellis Island is part of the Stat of Lib tour, Ellis Island is v interesting. Saw a beautiful sunset ove manhattan from there.

I hear that the Intrepid Museum is awesome - it may be of interest.

I know some guys that got great value in mens jackets in a mens store not far from Battery Park area - can find out place if you want. Also jewellry store that Aer Lingus crowd also go to.

Check craigslist.org for people selling tickets. Also if you go on the night there are usually people there selling for face value. Don't forget to haggle if the price seems too high.

    Museums:
    THe Met
    The Fryck
    Museum of Natural History

    Empire State building at Night
    Ice skating rockefellar center

A drink at the campbell apartments at Grand Central.

    Chinatown for shopping.

I dont think Times Square is that interesting unless you have tickets to a show.

If you are going to walk the Brooklyn Bridge you may as well go for some juicy Italian when you are in Brooklyn. Much better than the food in Little Italy.

Anyone been to the lower east side tenement museum?
    http://www.tenement.org/
seems pretty interesting - you can do the tour with different 'immigrant' experiences, german-jewish, italian and irish etc any thoughts?

I did the Irish tenament tour and I thought it was good. Gives you a good idea of the living conditions and tribulations of the original Irish wave but you also get some of the idea of the impact the Irish had on NYC society.

Be sure and check out Ellis island museum as well.
