It's nothing to do with winpwn it's the update from apple wipes the drive and starts fresh not sure why but it is probably partly to do with apples drm and also that how the data is processed for example if you restore your phone after an update the contacts will crash but if you set up as a new phone xnd sync the same contacts everything is fine

Guys, a niggling backup\firmware update issue I have.

Twice now after I have updated to a new firmware (1.1.4 to 2.0 and 2.0. to 2.0.1) I have lost all my music and videos on the iPhone :-( I done a backup beforehand and thankfully was able to restore all my contacts, SMS messages etc. etc. but losing the music and vids each time is starting to piss me off. I used WinPWN to build a custom firmware each time and then done the shift + restore in DFU mode to restore it.

I manually manage my music and videos on my iPhone as I don't like synching, on previous iPod you could manually syn with a number of PC's but now that does not seem to be allowed. I am almost 100% sure that before when I done an upgrade from 1.0.2. to 1.1.4 I had all my music and videos intact afterwards, I didn't use WinPWN then though, it was an official Apple restore and then an unlock via iLiberty+. Why in the process of doing the firmware upgrade which I thought was essentially the operating system does it delete all user content?? One would imagine that the two are separate??

Any info\enlightened on this would be appreciated.

    M

Most likely you are going onto edge without realising it if the wifi signal drops out the phone will switch over to edge without any warning
Boss prefs if it has been updated for 2.0 will allow you to turn edge off to prevent it from happening

    hi,
does anyone know if there is a way to check HOW you've spent your PAYG credit on o2??? as in €xx.xx on text msgs, €xx.xx on calls, €xx.xx on internet etc.....?
reason is i have gone through about €60 in credit since i started using my iphone properly when i got back from america last week and i dont know where its going!!!
i have been on the internet, app store etc... but only once on EDGE as it cost me like €15 for 10mins!!! the rest of the time ive benn using the wifi in my office, apart from that im just using the phone as normal (calls & texts) so i dont know where the mony is going??? and its adding up!

is there any way to check????

PS thanks to basquille.... i can now download from the app store. (simple reinstall of itunes) :o

a bit of help needed here guys.

so basicaly i tried to upgrade the firmware on my unlocked 1st gen iphone. I was running 1.14 to 2.01. I tried using winpin and got as far as the creating your own custom .ispw file, but then the app just keeps closing, just before the progress bar reaches the end, so the file is not actally created !!. So then I read that I could just restore the 2.01 firmware in on itunes and it would work. So I did this but had now seeming locked the phone. When I plug it in itunes tells me that I need to restore the phone, but when I try to restore back to 1.14 I get an error message "an unknown error occured (20)" ?? WTF

My ZiPhone application, which I originaly used to unlock is not working.

The screen on my iPhone just showing the usb connection and the itunes logo....and thats it.

any ideas where I can go from here ?

    thanks:confused:

You can only use itunes to update to 2.01 if you are on a pwned 2.0

you would be better going to 2.0 now and then update to 2.01 from there

    Ziphone won't work with 2.*

Boss prefs is an app that allows you to turn on and off things like edge/ wifi bluetooth etc

have a look in cydia and see if you can see it

or get the beta installer for 2 and see if its in there afaik it has been updated for 2.0

No, ZiPhone will not be required. That should never be used anyways.. it's infamous for being very buggy and terrible written, and have ruined many peoples iPhones.

It's safe to upgrade to 2.0 - you using a PC or a Mac? I'm gonna assume a PC, but there's a video here which you can follow directly: Video!

Any questions, give me a shout!

Just a quick question basq on updating to 2.0 using the above video...the iphone is already activated so would I still check the box for activation? How would I then update to 2.0.1? Or can I directly update to 2.0.1?

I got it to work in the end....huge sigh of relief...the bloody thing did not want to go into DFU mode.

is it possible to get the push mail working on a first gen phone running 2.01?

I know I can set it up to check for my Gmail periodically, but push would be nice. Has anyone got this to work yet?

    thank again

push does not work with gmail you can set up an account with another service like yahoo that does support push and redirect your gmail to there

    thread on it here http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/general-iphone-chat/492-working-gmail-push.html

    that is worth a read

Ok the phone signal is irrelevant to the wifi

When you try to connect to the eircom router does the phone ask for a password

Are you sure that wifi is turned on in the router and that the eircom network u are seeing is yours

Hi Cd. The phone asks for a password, I input it and then it says it can't find the server. I went to a business park today and they had free wifi and when I went to join it said the same thing so I'm guessing it's not my wifi setup but the phone.
The signal I meant btw was the 3 wifi signal bars between the vodafone signal and the lock sign. That signal is on full.

2 things one are you sure you are entering the password correctly ( ie not entering o instead of 0 etc)

second you could enter the ip settings yourself presuming its an netopia 3347

    the gateway is 192.168.1.254

    set the ip to 192.168.1.4

then search the eircom site for the DNS settings for eircom

Found this on this website http://mytriniphone.com/blog/2008/08/iphone-tips-and-tricks-part-1/

Now it makes more sense as to why my data is lost everytime. Is there any way to update and still be unlocked without having to do full restores with custom firmware each time?

Difference between Updating and Restoring iPhone Software
    - If you update, the iPhone software is updated but your downloaded applications, settings, and songs are not affected.

    - If you restore, the latest version of iPhone software is reinstalled, default settings are restored, and data stored on iPhone is deleted, including downloaded applications, songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. In iTunes 7.7, you can also restore from a backup without deleting data stored on iPhone.

In desperation I backed up my phone and used winpwn to restore it to new. before I synched my old info the wifi was working perfectly and I was able to access my eircom network no problem. As soon as I synched my old details back onto the phone it couldn't access the network again:eek:
Any idea what it might be that's interfering???

Scratch that. I got it sorted. thanks cdebru for your help and patience.

This is the one I used: http://sleepers.net/news/2008/07/25/winpwn-20-guide/

Be patient, it takes a while to figure out and needs to be perfect to get working.

Ok, officially at the end of my damn tether here. I'm on 1.1.3 and want to upgrade to 2.

Problem is I have itunes at home and that's cool, I also HAD itunes in old job which i used solely for contacts, no other content. So, as I've no access to that other itunes I now can't sync my contacts because my home itunes thinks I've no contacts, sync with it and I lose every contact on my phone.

Does anyone know of a relatively easy way of transferring contacts from an iphone to somewhere on my pc so I can then import them into itunes?

Or, will a sync actually work? I don't want to risk losing my contacts so haven't actually tried on my home pc. Any ideas anyone?

Apparently I can't edit my own post so:

UPDATE: Just synced and all album / podcast art work has gone nuts. Wrong images all over the place. What's going on?

Anyone know why a phono to phono cable wouldn't work on a first gen iphone when connecting it to a cars AUX? It works perfect on the new 3G model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,451 ✭✭✭thehomeofDob

Maybe a stupid response, as I own neither an original, or a 3G iPhone, but maybe the rescessed jack is preventing the plug from being inserted fully?

Just updated my phone to 2.01 from 1.1.3 and all my credit disappeared on those mysterious 9011 texts (I'm on o2 PAYG). I hadn't heard anything about them in ages so didn't think to turn off edge on boss prefs. Question though, has there been any update on fixing this or is it still just a 'turn edge off' solution?

Turn EDGE off.. or change the EDGE settings so they're incorrect.

Aye, cheers have done that. Hopefully all fixed now. 15 quid lesson learned.

Anyone else find typing ridiculously slow in 2.0.1? I mean the keyboard spends about 3 seconds catching up with what I'm typing.

Yeah, it took €5 - €8 off me before I noticed.

Yep, I upgraded to 2.0 and it was slow. It was supposed to be fixed in 2.0.1 but heard it wasn't so didn't bother upgrading.

But 2.0.2 has just been released in the last hour.. and it DOES fix this issue.

    Yes, it's fine!

You should have no problems with it.
