No, I upgraded straight from 1.1.3 to firmware 2.0 - no need to upgrade to 1.1.4 first.

Follow the guide I linked to earlier.

thanks for that, trying to find the guide link you gave in an earlier post, do you have it handy?

    thanks

Hi Folks,, as the name would suggest , i,m terrified of technology :o , so here's where I am,, I patiently read scripts from page one to page 65 over the past few days,,,and have become almost friends ( lol ) with people like Powerhouse Dan, RC28, CDU etc to name a few and the occasional visit from unlockthatiPhone all of which showed great tips ( even for moi the spas ),,
Now here's my situation,, having not read all 370 odd entries,, I,m having a 3G iPhone 16GB bought for me in New York,, again referencing page 65 Powerhsd was then saying "iPhone has introduced a new Bootloader which "currently" does not allow any kind of unlocking. The same Bootloader is present on the new iPhones that are purchased in the US with 1.1.2 pre-installed"..
Sorry I,m so far behind, any body know right now can the new 3G models be unblocked if brought in from the US ?
Or where I might get one even an older version iPhone, if this is necessary,
Any comments welcome,, of course I'll watch updates from here onwards.

    Thanks all in advance..

Cheers Gary,, warning here beginith the dumb questions ;) a request for patience up front if I may,, you say " you can activate and jailbreak but not unlock!" in laymans terms buddy,, is it worth my while getting this phone and having it jailbreaked and activated ? I,m currently on vodafone payg network,, will I have the full functionality available on the phone,, read back through as much tread as the eyes allow and can,t see anyone confirming they,ve bought the new US iPhones and are now using same , .. for fear of destroying the phone immediatly I'd rather be sure its available step by step and easy ( spasmoid friendly ) I,m in Dublin btw..

Short answer is that no you wont be able to use it as a phone (at the moment) probably in the near future it will be unlocked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,492 ✭✭✭randombar

I'd get it brought over anyways and just hold onto it until they know how to unlock it, should be a couple of weeks I reckon?

Jailbreak = put on your own applications.

Activate = Don't have to register the phone for a contract (AFAIK)

Unlock = Can use any sim in the phone.

EDIT: Don't be afraid of asking questions too, the lads here have helped me out loads and I'll try and do the same for you!

Absolutely if you are getting it relatively cheap ie you are not paying ebay prices then it is worth a punt chances are it will be unlockable in the near future(no gaurantees)
Worse case you have an ipod touch with a camera

Your settings are probably in the phone already. I know I never entered O2's EDGE settings in the history I've had the iPhone but those EDGE settings are what cost me a couple of euro on Sunday night.

They seemed to have preloaded most mobile operators EDGE settings into the firmware. But there's no option to turn it off.. and I had to.

So see my post here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=56630694&postcount=5628.

Look for the folder in the 'CarrierBundles' folder that matches the text in your operator logo - the .plist file in there will contain your settings but I recall them being correct when I changed them to something invalid.

PS - If you're unsure, let me know what your operator logo says on the top of your iPhone and I'll check the EDGE settings for it in the 'CarrierBundles' folder in my phone.

Oh and yeah can you get me one? :D

Have not tried this in 2.0 but i know in 1.1.4 if you put in an 02 sim the edge settings option disapears and it uses the default 02 settings from the firmware
However if you use an non 02 sim ie vodafone meteor or tesco the edge menu reappears

thanks, I was thinking whats the story with custom ringtones in 2.0, is it still the same process to add them (rename .m4a file to .m4p etc.....)

Yep, read somewhere that this is still the case in 2.0 alright.

Yep, the "renaming .m4a to .m4r" trick is the only choice for the time being. It still works!

Are the apps still there and just not working, or did they disappear? Because all the applications I downloaded in AppStore (on the iPhone) disappeared when I performed a sync on my iPhone on Sunday night. Seemed to be a bit of inconsistency on the apps I downloaded in AppStore and the ones downloaded directly in iTunes, so I redownloaded them all in iTunes and they're now syncing fine.

But if they are just not working.. that sounds a bit odd. I'd say do a sync with iTunes, then restore with the custom firmware again (EVERYONE SHOULD BACKUP THAT FIRMWARE.. AS IT CAN BE USED AGAIN!) and resync.

    Good luck!

Ya the apps are there just not working, so that's what I'll have to do this evening, is it something to do with the text one I added manually? That might have messed up all that is going on?

Might go and make a custom boot screen now :)

Wouldn't have thought so, but did you try removing EirText from the Applications folder?

Hey guys, just seen this http://mytriniphone.com/blog/2008/07/unlock-iphone-with-custom-2-ipsw-and-restore-in-itunes/

Apparently you can now unlock the first gen iPhone with no need to PWN it first. I have a 1.1.4 unlocked with iliberty and was thinking about trying this out as I do not have a mac. I have downloaded a custom 2.0 firmware that I assum was created on a mac from here http://www.iphone-hacks.com/downloads/file/113

If I do the restore from the custom firmware and all goes OK will I lose my contacts, SMS messages etc. etc.? Also, will the iPhone still be unlcoked?

    Cheers,
    M

not sure if this has been covered somewhere else, but any big advantages to upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.0??

Is there any performance hit after the upgrade??

I'm thinking of going back to 1.1.4.... Typing texts can get really annoying and phones hung a few times since upgrading. Last night it just went crazy... from being non resposive to the screen staying black, then white... Then it just reset itself... I'm finding that its much slower getting into SMS and contacts than 1.1.4 was....

    1. Click on your iPhone's phone button.
    2. Then click on the Keypad tab.
    3. You need to then add the following code: *5005*86*171# (presuming that's Meteors voicemail)
    4. After entering the code, hit call.
    5. The voicemail number is now set.
