I liked the show - will be tuning in again this week.

Good show. I never even thought about the 'Dia dhuit' thing. So if you're atheist you can't speak Irish? :D Damn straight..:P

A friend of mine who is a teacher had complaints about the translation of Dia duit. Not sure how she overcame it.

I thought the show was great, "le cunamh Dé" - if you don't believe in God you have no hope :D (or whatever that quote was).

Just watched this on video. Obviously I'm being hideously old-fashioned here, out of date and a Joe Duffy crank caller. But, is there any real need for Des to say the word 'f**k' and its variants as every sixth word when he's doing his 'comedy' turn? No-one is shocked by this word anymore. It's just that it is actually quite boring to hear someone repeat the same word ad nauseum. A bit like someone who says "ya know worra mean" at the end of every sentence. The English language is a terrific language, as is the Irish language. No need to use the 'f' word as an easy substitute for another beautiful English word you could easily use.

Yeah, my mother will love this show but the effing and blinding will grate on her. There's no problem with saying "f*ck" now and then but he only does it during the stand up routines, as if he thinks it intrinsically adds to the comedy value.

On the other hand, it was hilarious when he said, "YORE MHÁTHAIR!".

I ended up watchin it only because my name is earl was not on, (as listed in my rte guide)
Anyway, wasnt too impressed i thought it was a little boring and wasnt that funny. Also i hate Irish (mostly because of that Blathnaid one from the Afternoon show) so I was a little biased, making fun of the Irish was the best part. It didnt make me see our native language in a whole new light or anything, which i assume is the point of the show?

Actually I think what the show is doing is showing the faults of the Irish language, the things that make it 'hard' to learn. (This is coming from an Irish teacher by the way!) The show is making it seem easy for Des to learn Irish but of course learning a language is easy when immersion is used.

Oh rite, well maybe if i was watching it from the start i would have a better handle on the point of it. The idea of being immersed in Irish makes me feel very uncomfortable! I dont think its the show for me..But i like Des:)

    Ha!

    'Vintage' Des Bishop!

Thing is about Des Bishop, he came here when he was about 14 I think. Hes what now, about 30, maybe 32? So hes been here for longer than he hasnt. So all this 'you guys' stuff just doesnt work anymore. And the reappearance of the Ameican accent whrn he wants to show the difference between him and us is just silly. Also, all this talking about the 'brothers' at 'home'. We're not back in the good old days where the land of Mericay was a big mystery. How often exactly did Mr Bishop interact with the brothers in the hood at age 12?

Having said all that I thik he's gotten over himself a bit in the last few years and I find him quite funny sometimes.

He just needs some new subject matter. Its not like Irishness is alien to him ffs.

I'm majorly impressed by Des's Irish! He was having fun with it and had it spoken to him pretty much all the time so it was easier for him to learn than having to learn it in school with the crap curriculum and all. And I love that he mentioned the fact that the curriculum is crap!

His version of Jump Around was great, and the guy helping him was hot!

Fairly easy.. its definitely not hard.
he's doing his job bazmo, he's bit of lefty, as seen in work experience, so alot of the rightist national celtic gaelgoir people don't like him

My god, you're clearly mad in the head...
love to see andrew maxwell get his own show.

... and this line above confirms that!

Jump Around in Irish was funny. Maybe it should be released as a charity single to raise some money for Irish scolorships or something like that.

Yep, it sounded really good, except when the pause comes in at jump around...

Perhaps Bishop and Everlast will get some sort of rivalry going.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭guinnessdrinker

Yeah a war of words that Everlast had with Eminem one time.

You can download it for free here off his website.

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD LÉIMIGÍ THART BY CLICKING ON THE BUTTON ABOVE. Please pass it around, request it in nite clubs, request it on the radio. Lets bring Gaeilge to the mainstream!

I don't think he's that bothered about making money from it. He just wants it to get spread around as much as possibly as publicity for the language. Fair play to him! :)

Irish isn't actually a hard language to learn, if taught correctly. It's a complete myth that it's inately harder to learn than other languages. People who go to Gaelscoileanna don't find it hard, because they're being taught the language in the proper manner, not because they're somehow more intelligent than people who go to English medium schools. It's all about the teaching method.

In fact, I've seen it stated more than once that English is considered one of the hardest languages to learn by learners, since it happens so often that it's not pronounced as spelt and has so many loan-words from other languages like Latin, French, Greek, etc. that don't conform to natural English pronunciation. Then there's the huge variance in irregular verbs: I am, he is, they are etc. It only seems easy when you're a native speaker of English.

    Cheers Muinteoir.

I downloaded it but it seems to have downloaded as a jpeg and I can't play the file. Anyone got any idea?

but english doesn't have male and female words, you nearly never know what to say just before every word with them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭lostexpectation

he said it ws easy with immersion, most of the country will never have immersion even with the rise of gaelsoileanna.

Exactly, which is why Des Bishop will always have better Irish than the majority of the country. :p

There's no way I'd be fluent in Irish if I didn't go to an all-Irish school.
