Was a good enough first episode. It's kinda funny but the point he is trying to get across is a valid and worthy one. Fair dues to him.

It was alright.. not a big Des Bishop fan but it was marginally interesting.

Although since when could fellow students listen in on what was being said in the Oral Irish exam? Come on RTÉ.. we're not morons! :rolleyes:

Crap I missed it. The one bloody show I've been harping on at my students about! Will it be on the RTE website?

yeah i wouldn't be a fan of his either but it was funny enough, most of us can identify with the jokes anyway :pac:

But if he starts preaching like he did on on the minimum wage show (what was that called again??) it'll put me off though

What I think is great about the show is that he's saying what everyone else is thinking. Even as an Irish teacher I can identify with some of what he was saying in the promos. (I haven't seen the show so I am only going on the promos.)

He was going on about how a lot of words aren't pronounced like they are spelt, like 'bhfuil', and it's so true. (Try getting firsts years to pronounce 'chomh'!)

Yeah he did make some valid points alright, think it'll prob help the discussion about how the language is taught, I speak two European languages better than I can speak Irish cos they were taught completly different but maybe that's another thread...

was funny when he was talking about the three different words for 2, do, dha and beirt

Feckit lads, anything that gets people speaking the Irish language, whether they are right or wrong, is ok in my book! I love when people make an effort. And Des Bishop will help the revival! (Which is already happening amongst young people!)

I saw the last 15 minutes.

Himself is from that neck of the woods (Inverin) so he was having great craic spotting everyone. His sister was in the Irish class with him.

I had to laugh at the Paddy's Day parade. George Bush, Osama and Sadam shooting each other with supersoakers. Only in Carraroe!

He may not have thought it at the time but he picked it up quite quickly. I loved the little lad teaching him about about the donkeys.

Des Bishop is from America? And he came over here while he was in his early teens?? That must've been mad for him trying to adjust to our ways and different customs. I'd love to hear more about his experiences.

there are a number of websites out there that tell you how great he is!

and yes im not a big fan but this was good.

I remember hearing him a few years ago on about the move over here.
He said he was getting in with the wrong kind of crowd and got in to drinking
at a young age ... so to combat this his parents sent him to Ireland

I watched it last night and thought it was alright, but it was just your typical Des Bishop fodder, i.e. outsider looking in and then commenting on "how mad ye all are!"

I think he only does these shows so that he can get new material.......oh and I'm sure the money helps too!

It was a good show. I did Honours Irish for the LC and Pass French (because I had 6 other Honours subjects). I got a B2 and A1 respectively yet can speak better French than Irish at this stage as more emphasis was placed on the conversational aspect of it.

he's doing his job bazmo, he's bit of lefty, as seen in work experience, so alot of the rightist national celtic gaelgoir people don't like him, love to see andrew maxwell get his own show.

Just watched it, his Irish oral was hilarious! I can see it getting confusing for those with very little Irish. My friend in France was delighted that it was online, she misses the Irish!

Just watched this on video. Obviously I'm being hideously old-fashioned here, out of date and a Joe Duffy crank caller. But, is there any real need for Des to say the word 'f**k' and its variants as every sixth word when he's doing his 'comedy' turn? No-one is shocked by this word anymore. It's just that it is actually quite boring to hear someone repeat the same word ad nauseum. A bit like someone who says "ya know worra mean" at the end of every sentence. The English language is a terrific language, as is the Irish language. No need to use the 'f' word as an easy substitute for another beautiful English word you could easily use.

I honestly think it might just be habit at this stage. No need for it, but maybe he just can't stop.

Perhaps it's a trait of the Gaeilgóir? I saw Dara O'Briain in the Cambridge Corn Exchange last week and every second word he said was "Fcuk", he's a native speaker too.

Perhaps it's the Gaelgóir way of showing their displeasure at speaking English

Probably more of a trait of the Irish really! I wonder if Des was one of those Americans who nearly fainted when someone cursed in front of them before he arrived in Ireland?

That's just reminded me, I saw Dara O'Briain doing a gig 100% in Irish when I was in college so it looks like he beat oul Des Bishop to it.

I also have a DVD of Eddie Izzard doing a gig in French in France which is just brilliant.
