    A US phone that was not activated on an AT&T account but was brought here and unlocked and jailbroken

    I doubt it very much but good luck to you if you have as they are refusing to take iphones that have not been activated with AT&T in the states it would be very odd that they would take one here

    Whats the repair by the way and are they doing it under warranty

    Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

    I pretended I was an American who was given the phone as a gift, that I was studying in Ireland for the last semester so there was no point in signing to AT&T till I got back.

    I said I had used my friends sim card to activate the phone and I was using it as an iPod / Web device.

    My phone was in for repair because the lower third of the screen was no longer responding to touch.

    So, I reset the phone and I sent it over to some friends I meet in San Antonio while on my J1, Fedex collected the phone from their gaff and sent back a brand new one, which they sent back over to me.

    Now I have a brand new one.

    Its really just a case of getting lucky with whatever customer service rep you get on the phone, and just keep talking so they dont ask questions.

    I read somewhere that 1/3 of iphones bought in the states are unactivated :D

    It won't be long before they're selling this with no network commitments!

    I am wondering wondering the exact same thing. I thought the it might be a thing about the North being bandit country :) (just kidding) but these last posts make it sound like a UK thing also.

    Wonder why they are so uptight about it down here...

    Why do I get the impression there's a high commission on iphone contracts here for o2 sales assistants.

    I went in to the o2 store on Grafton St. today and as soon as I picked up the display iphone, I was approached by a sales guy.

    Sales guy: are you interesting in buying the iphone
    me: no thanks, I have one already
    Sales guy: you do know that unlocked iphones are going to be barred by signal
    me: I bought it from the US so I think I'm okay thanks
    Sales guy: are you sure you don't want to take out a new contract with a new iphone. You can port your number over directly!

    just shows you how pushy these guys are !!

    Hey,
    I used iPlus on my iPhone and now iTunes is not detecting it on either my PC or Mac. I tried reinstalling iTunes but it didn't make a difference. If I put it into recovery mode, it detects it and gives me the option to restore. I presume I'll have to do that, but I don't want to lose my contacts especially. Is there a way to back them up without being able to connect to iTunes?
    When I was able to connect, I recall seeing something that said the phone was synced with iTunes fairly recently, and looked (to my amateur eyes) to be a backup -- so would that contain my contacts etc? And if I restored, would that backup still be there, and could be used on the restored phone, once I upgrade and jailbreak it again?

    Cheers folks.

    If you synced your contacts with itunes then you will get them all back when you sync again

    It seems to me the one thing you do not want to do when Unlocking the IPhone no matter what method you use is downgrade the Bootloader as it may cause problems in the future. Having studied this thread it seems clear to me that IPlus is the preferred method of unlocking however when I read the IPlus Guide(from IClarified) the first statment says: "How to Unlock 1.1.4 and Downgrade to 3.9-fakeblank iPhone Bootloader". This has me somewhat confused, do you have to downgrade the bootloader(fake or otherwise) or am I missing something.

    No you do not have to you can unlock it without downgrading the bootloader but your baseband firmware will be 04.12.13G which is the baseband for the 1.1.2 phone it will work fine except locateme which will need the locatme app

    If you are going to downgrade your bootloader do it with iplus so you get the fake blank 3.9 as this allows you to upgrade to 4.6 again

    And Finally if you do downgrade the bootloader to 3.9FB DO NOT use 1.1.1 or lower firmware as it may rewrite a new baseband over your fakeblank

    Or use the app iSim, its free if you manually add each contact into your phone book from your sim card one by one.

    Yeah so like I said apple will not warranty an unlocked phone

    In your case you were able to get around them with charm and an american address but if you ring Apple in Cork and ask them to fix your unactivated AT&T iphone they will tell you where to go. That was my point.

    Why would you do that

    just add rep.frenchiphone.com to your sources then use simport to add them all in one go.

    Because i keep getting a Download Packet Failed error when trying to install/download apps.

    No idea how iSim got on the phone.

    Still in the early stages of figuring out this phone.

    Need some help....

    I've just noticed that my Edge Settings is no longer available to me. (Settings > General > Network > Edge) it's missing, I presume it related to the upgrade to 1.1.4.
    Edge its self is working, I can see the icon on the main screen and I can use safari via edge but I wanted to check my settings as I'm trying to set up Swirly MMS (I can send MMS but unable to Fetch them, I get the following message "GPRS/EDGE is not Available", But i know its working).

    My Phone was purchased with 1.1.1 and i upgraded a couple of weeks ago to 1.1.4

    I'm not very techi.. I've never SSH on to Iphone, I'm hoping their is an easy solution.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Phil

    Ok obviously the iphone will be out of warranty BUT will apple still fix it if we pay for repairs? The same way they would fix a laptop out of warranty? Or will they refuse altogether?

    It does not exactly answer your question, but I got one from the O2 shop in Omagh this weekend with no problem, so O2 UK doesn't seem to care too much.

    Yes but did they sell you an iPhone without the contract. All O2 stores in the UK I went into were insisting on you signing an 18 month contract just like the republic and that phone(16GB) was £330, there was no option to buy sans contract.

    I didn't sign anything. I actually first went to Carphone Warehouse thinking they would be more incline to sell it without a contract. The guys there told me I wouldn't have to sign a contract straight away but something to commit I was going to register on iTunes. I said the phone was for a friend in the UK and asked if I was really taking a commitment and he said no (without me asking he actually told me "you can unlock it but you will lose the warranty"). But in the end they didn't have the 16GB version in stock so I tried my luck with the O2 shop:

    Me: can I have a 16GB iphone?
    O2 Salesperson: do you know the price plans?
    Me: yes
    Salesperson: Do you have broadband at home to activate it?
    Me: yes

    Then she just gave me the phone, asked me to pay by credit card only, and that's it ... so nothing at all to sign and O2 actually seems to be an easier option than Carphone Warehouse.

    Cheers Bob, thanks for the clarification. Must depend on the store/salesperson you get. Seems like there is that many unlocked iphones being used worldwide(figures suggest 1/3 of all iphone sold) it won't be long untill the contract business is binned anyway.

    The quick answer is YES. Check out iPlus or any of the following guides:

    Hi Guys. Just back from the states this morn and brought an iphone back with me. I have managed to unlock it but I cannot figure out how to get my sim contacts to appear on the phone. Can anyone help me out on this as I have looked around and cant seem to get an answer. My phone is also telling me I am not subscribed to EDGE and this seems to limit me from using certain functions. How can I activate this?? Sorry if these seem like silly questions but its all new to me. Any help would be appreciated.

    Go to installer

    Add rep.frenchiphone.com to the sources

    Then install simport

    run simport and it will copy your contacts to the phone

    Go to settings then general then network then edge and enter the settings for your provider

    You will need:
    * SIM Cards (2)
    * Needle-nosed pliers
    * 150 g feta cheese, cubed
    * 4 tomatoes cut in wedges
    * 1 cucumber unpeeled, cut in rounds
    * 1 large onion, cut in fine wedges
    * 2 Tbs capers
    * 1 Tsp dried oregano
    * 15-20 black olives
    * Salt (as much you like)
    * 2-3 Tsp Olive oil

    No, not really. The iPhone is now completely software unlockable, all you will need is your iPhone, the white cable, a computer, and take a look at one of the iClarified tutorials.

    Just thought I would let you all know that iLiberty+ has been released tonight. It's an all singing, all dancing software unlock, which corrects some of the previous probs with iPlus and also allows you to install whatever payloads you want to. I haven't used it yet myself, but if anyone else has I'd be interested to hear how you got on.

    Check it out at http://ipluspwns.com/

    Whenever I try to send a mail using edge get following error message:

    Cannot send mail. The connection to the outgoing server "mail-relay1.stisp.net" failed.

    When use wifi network at home works no problem.
    Its an eircom.net e-mail account, set up on my desktop outlook also.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

    sometimes you have to match the smtp settings with the isp server you are using.

    If you are using the eircom wifi, these are the following setings

    smpt: mail1.eircom.net

    use ssl authentification
