is that what you said? Just a bit worried that they will cop on to my Irish accent and figure I'll be unlocking it... Suppose I can say its a present for my American mate who's on at&t
no that was my story if they asked me for one, i didn't have to use it because it was my brother who was buying it for me who has an american accent :p but i told him to use that story if they asked for one.

in fact i'm getting him to get me a 16gig one when he's coming back in april so there will be an 8gig up for sale on adverts.ie when that comes :)

What's the story with charging the IPhones that are imported from the states, can the included dock be used or do you need to use a step down converter.

    They charge over USB.

The converter will work here fine at 240v. Just need a plug adapter.

Is there any way to receive SMS delivery reports to the iphone? I'm doing some research that indicates if you add a string to the start of the text you can receive reports, but the string seems to vary by network. I'm on Vodafone IE billpay, for reference.

Anybody come across a solution to the above?

Also, I bought a wallplug charger for my ipod video about 3 years ago, but I'm concerned about using this with my iphone. Is it safe?

I'd be concerned using that charger , I've heard some have blown using ipod attachments.

Cdebru, I used iplus 2 to bypass stealth sim on my iphone, after 2 atempts it worked but it was not the internaitonal edition, that seemed to hang, but the regular version worked.

My caller id is not working right, should I try to get international to work or do I need to edit the caller id file (phone number templates)????

    Yes on 1.1.4

Exactly, it's too much of a gamble, imo. Plus there's customs charges and VAT to pay. Why not just buy from the North?

now I might consider selling this 8gb one, as I have my official o2 one now, anyone know what's a reasonable price to ask without ripping anyone off? its 4 months old and perfect, a few light brush marks on aluminium to the back but working great.

you dont need an american credit card to buy the iPhone online. You do need an america address to send it to. I did it a few weeks ago no problem at all using my irish credit card.

Are you sure about this? It'll save me a lot of hassle if this is the case. :)

It does not exactly answer your question, but I got one from the O2 shop in Omagh this weekend with no problem, so O2 UK doesn't seem to care too much.

why do o2 Uk not care and the O2 ireland sales assistants become sticklers when it comes to signing a contract?

And forgive the ignorance but how much was it sim free?

I've a friend in New York at the moment and she was on the look out for a phone for me. She sent a text today saying 'Sorry I couldn't get the phone, most of them are locked for Europe and the shops that had them unlocked were a bit shifty looking.'

Is what she's being told normal? Is it the American phone I'm looking for? Excuse the stupid questions again :o

Its supposed to be locked! You do the unlocking which takes 5mins with software. Read a few pages of this thread and you'll understand! Buy from apple not at&t as they want contract.

You need Voda, O2, Meteor or Tesco Mobile. You could port your Three number to one of these 4 for free.

It is 330 pounds for the 16GB version (locked to O2 UK). Unlocking it is easy enough though.
Apple has contract with a single operator in every country where the iPhone is available, so they are not too keen on selling unlocked phones. The only place where you can get an officially unlocked iPhone is France because Orange a law forces them to also sell them unlocked, however the price is very high and you actually have to buy it locked and follow a complicated procedure to get it unlocked.

So in summary: you have to buy it locked and unlock it or to buy one which was unofficially unlocked (the second option is usually very overpriced).

I am wondering wondering the exact same thing. I thought the it might be a thing about the North being bandit country :) (just kidding) but these last posts make it sound like a UK thing also.

Wonder why they are so uptight about it down here...
