Okay I just decided to try the iPlus thing again and it seems to have fixed it

however it still says that it's version 1.1.1 (3A109a)

iplus doesn't update the phone for you

You use itunes to update the phone to 1.1.4 and then use iplus to jailbreak it and unlock it

    Follow the tutorial on www.hackthephone.com

I was talking to an O2 agent who mentioned that all warrenties are void if I phones are unlocked. He also said that Apple will soon enough detect all Iphones that are not being used with their designated service provider, ie O2 in Ireland and cut them off. (Through downloading from their website with service updates I tunes etc.)

I also find it strange for boards.ie to allow the posting of links to unlocking I phones and even discussing the topic. This is no different to posting information about illegal cracking software and chipping console game sets. It was not too long ago when a major Irish music premotor tried to sue Boards.ie over certain postings about events. Apple could very well do the same.

It could be risky territory from apple's point of view also. It would probably face a lot of law suits if it started snooping around in other people's business and cutting them out. I think the fact that you were talking to an "02 agent" says it all! I'm sure he/she gets paid commission

Imagine an O2 agent saying something like that?

Now where did I leave my tinfoil hat?

Such a load of crap. Why do people believe that Apple have so much power, it's just a phone at the end of the day and who ever buys it can do what they want with it.

There's nothing illegal about unlocking an iphone as far as I know, same as unlocking any other phone

download 1.1.4 then in itunes press shift and restore then select the 1.1.4 file you downloaded

    The phone will be locked

then download iplus2 and unlock, jailbreak the phone

    Tutorial on www.hackthephone.com

Excellent, That worked like a dream. Perfect. Thank you.

A couple of things I shoiuld have done first ( probably obvious to all you "experts" )

    1) I have lost all my list of apps sources... I should have made a list.

    2) I have lost all of the wallpapers I downloaded as they were not in photos.

    3) I cannot remmember all 6 pages of apps I had installed... I wish I had taken a photo fo each page and make it easier to re-install each I wnated back.

    4) The upgrade / unlocking process was very fast but the restore of music ect ect is goinf to take a LOONNNGGG TIIMMEEEEE and then I have to re-install all my apps. ! I probably would not have bothered upgrading , had i known it would take this long.

    YMMV

    Eddie

Salesmen will tell whopping great big lies to discourage you from pursuing a different option.

As for your objection to the forum allowing these discussions, there is no moral grounds for that.

The iPhone is not subsidized - the consumer pays the full whack.
You should have the choice of what network you use.
If you use a cracked iPhone on O2, O2 are not really any worse off - they have to pay 25% to Apple on the iPhone contract.
Apple have already been paid for the iPhone, and creaming 25% of the phone bill is not their right.

    Has anyone done this recently?

When the iPhone launch up the North, some people bought them up there for use down here. I wonder whether they were able to do this openly?

Are there still any shops in Belfast that will sell an iPhone without the person signing a contract?

I know someone who is up and down regularly, but I would not ask them or anyone else to buy one if it would require them to do anything deceptive (e.g. sign 'Mickey Mouse' on the contract etc :), present fake bills/ID or any of that sh1te).

If a shop will hand over a phone in exchange for cash/credit card payment, end of transaction, that would be fine.

o2 stores sell them up there. i think they request payment by credit/laser card though, this has be answered about 100 times in the thread so have a look back as i'm only going on my memory

feck sake -- now iTunes isn't detecting the iPhone :( Just not doing anything when it's plugged in (even though other stuff is popping up, as it usually does, external to iTunes).

    Any clues?

Once I get that working I should be able to upgrade easy enough, thanks.

ps. I tried it on the Mac and now the PC but no joy.

Apologies if this has been covered before but it's a massive thread...

I upgraded my iPhone via iTunes to 1.1.4. I used ZiPhone 2.5 to unlock, jailbreak and activate the phone but I was careful to make sure to untick the box that downloaded the bootloader. Unfortunately I get no signal from all SIMS. I think ZiPhone 2.5 was the problem but does anybody know how to fix it?

    Thanks.

    Hmm

Tried with 2 x 3 sim cards, 1 x o2, 1x Meteor, 1 x tesco, 1 x Vodafone. I can't get it to work with the 3 sims. Perfect on everything else, so I must be notching right.

    well guys

I am in a bit of dilemma at the moment. I have the choice of buying an iphone in newry and unlocking it or getting one officially from o2. What do you think. Any opinions ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,202 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Buy it from O2 and pay €45 a month for "nathing"!

    That's not a dilemma matey.

Well it depends, do you like the contract that comes with the iPhone here? Would you prefer it to any other contract on any other network or any of the pre-pay offerings? This is pretty much all that it comes down to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,202 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Well.. you get the warranty when buying from O2 (unless you jailbreak of course)

I'm just wondering what age this guy is?! Apple can only void the warranty but I wonder will 02 block them from using the network? I'm sure meteor and vodafone will soon have some great data packages to ween those away from 02 with jailbroken iphones :D

3 use the 3g network hence why you need a 3g phone to use their network. iphone is not 3g hence your 3 sims won't work. the iphone is doing you a favour tbh in not letting you use 3 ;) :pac:

    Hi lads

    quick one on texting....

if i send a text to one of my contacts, the message thread shows up in the main screen with the contacts name, however if they reply, its starts another thread with the contacts number in its international format...kinda hard to explain....any know is there a fix for this??

update to this, i did some testing....if the first message is sent from the iphone, that message will be put in a thread under the contacts name, however when the contact replies, that message will end up in a different thread, under the contacts phone number in international format.

if it goes the other way, first message is received on the iphone, it will go into a thread under the contacts name, and all subsequent messages either sent or received will stay in this thread....the way its meant to be.

    bit annoying really

One way to fix this is to put all your contacts' numbers in international format. I did this and texting works perfectly. This is also handy for when you're roaming as you don't have to do anything extra.

Do you need still need a SIM device as well as a software unlock for a new 1.1.4 iPhone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,202 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    Nope, software will do it.

Quick question for the tech guys here cdebru basquille et al, I bought an iphone from the states a couple of weeks ago 1.1.3 otb. Unfortunately I hadn't read this thread before jailbreaking/unlocking it and used ziphone to do this. So my bootloader has been downgraded to 3.9. The phone has been working perfectly so far with my vodafone sim but i'm guessing there could be problems further down the road because of this downgrade. Will I be able to upgrade the iphone or am I stuck at 1.1.3 because of using ziphone? What are the potential problems from using ziphone?

Apple can only void the warranty if bought directly from them (and even then under certain conditions). If you buy from CPW or O2 they are the people you deal with for warranty.
