Crazy thing I noticed today was when I'm outside my wi-fi zone, youtube still works, loads new searches etc! (but access to iTunes store doesn't)? Yet there is no mention of EDGE under my network settings anymore. I'm freaked out that it may be on permanently now though:eek:

Your not stuck on 1.1.3 you are stuck on the 3.9bootloader which may or may not make a difference in the future
the main risk from ziphone is the process it uses but your past that so no point in worrying about maybes

Not overly relevant, but I only noticed today that my AT&T sim that came with the iPhone has 3G written on it.

Yeah i'm in the states at the moment and they were sold out of the 16GB version in New York and Orlando...

Hopefully they'll get them in again before I leave!

I tried 3 different at&t stores when I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago, they were having none of it. I tried the present excuse, they all told me I had to go to the apple store if I wanted an iPhone without a contract.

just back from NY, no problem buying 8GB iphone in apple store, though they emphasized that phone would not work in Ireland, no 16s to be got anywhere there.
Now I may be going over very old ground but i'm not too up to date on iphone, once unlocked, is it a case of physically opening the phone and putting my existing O2 sim card in, if so how do i open iphone casing?

No need to open Iphone casing. But you do need a straightened out staple (or similar).

Quick question. Is is possible to purchase from the Apple Online store with an Irish credit card/Irish billing address, and have it shipped to a U.S. address? Or do you have to use an american credit card?

Just a quick reply to thank previous contributors for their hints, tips and experiences in this thread. I have just unlocked my 8GB iPhone that I just brought in from the states and all is working perfectly.

I decided to go with iPlus to unlock it rather than Ziphone due to possible issues with upgrading in the future. I had an error (1604) when trying to upgrade firmware which left me with my heart in my mouth for about 20 mins but I fixed that by reseating the sim card and rebooting both the iPhone and the PC. The rest of the unlocking went perfectly but it is a real worrying process as you are constantly afraid something will go wrong!

I am really impressed with this phone, escpecially with the Wifi capability. It's like no device I have ever used before and I am really glad I bought it.

to buy from the US online apple store you need to use a US credit card. A lot of people don't know this but the first digits on your credit card identifies your country.

I used iPlus on my iPhone and now iTunes is not detecting it on either my PC or Mac. I tried reinstalling iTunes but it didn't make a difference. If I put it into recovery mode, it detects it and gives me the option to restore. I presume I'll have to do that, but I don't want to lose my contacts especially. Is there a way to back them up without being able to connect to iTunes?
When I was able to connect, I recall seeing something that said the phone was synced with iTunes fairly recently, and looked (to my amateur eyes) to be a backup -- so would that contain my contacts etc? And if I restored, would that backup still be there, and could be used on the restored phone, once I upgrade and jailbreak it again?

It seems to me the one thing you do not want to do when Unlocking the IPhone no matter what method you use is downgrade the Bootloader as it may cause problems in the future. Having studied this thread it seems clear to me that IPlus is the preferred method of unlocking however when I read the IPlus Guide(from IClarified) the first statment says: "How to Unlock 1.1.4 and Downgrade to 3.9-fakeblank iPhone Bootloader". This has me somewhat confused, do you have to downgrade the bootloader(fake or otherwise) or am I missing something.

I didn't. I upgraded to 1.1.4 in Itunes then unlocked with iplus, simple as. I ignored the "Downgrade to 3.9-fakeblank iPhone Bootloader" reference. Not sure what difference it makes, but what I did worked for me.
