Oh top man rc28, i take it like hotels and that around the city(Dublin) would have wi-fi in their lobbies. Well i'd imagine so.... thanks guys
Yes they would but unfortunately very few are free and even fewer would be totally open (no wifi password security). My brother was in NY recently and he ,like you, found tons of free wifi networks everywhere in NY but in Dublin everything is closed off and scabby.

All the big pubs have free wifi now. If you use Skype, use the JiWire hotspot finder and you'll find loads of places in Dublin now have free wifi...

    Last check was over 40

But are you really going to do to a pub just to install some apps on installer, "I am going to the pub to install some apps take to ye later lads"

    Hi all,

I called into GSM solutions/Phone volts today in Dublin city centre. I picked up a Sim-Max with cloning software to see if it was possible to use this to attach my iPhone to a Irish network. I downgraded my US 1.1.2 OTB week 46 to firmware 1.1.1 and jailbroke it successfully to get this far so I am able to use everything but the actual phone.

A couple of weird things about GSM solutions:

    1. They charged me twice what the quoted price was on their website!!!
    2. They are describing their Sim-Max product as a "Turbo-sim" http://www.phonevolts.com/product_info.php?products_id=150&XTCsid=452ca6e2d58952f4a55f417250c4b0fc

It's all a bit dubious to me so does anyone know if this can actually work? The sim clone software would not even read my AT&T sim to start the cloning process so without being done for libel I think they're trying to rip anyone they can off .... Caveat Emptor.

BTW Alan was the nice person who so gracefully ripped me off. Any answers are vague enough to ensure that you give it a lash by purchasing their product, exactly the same bulls**t that is posted on their website.

    Regards,
    Nice0ne

PS - if anyone has the means to get my iPhone working properly can they please contact me?

NiceOne, any dealings I've ever had with GSM Solutions have been negative ones. I remember a while back he tried to sell me a 'new' Nokia 8910. I was presented with a battered phone in a battered box, scrapes all over the housing and screen. When I questioned it I was told it was a demo model. Absolutely laughable - don't know how the chap is still in business!

Yeah We Tested this doesnt work the prob is the simmax can only read v1 sim cards, Which are very rare nowadays, I question all this when i rang them up last week,And assured me it would work but it doesn't. No in other words wasted your money and alot of other peoples, Apparently they had reports they it worked i asked him for sources he could not provide any said do a google search. There are only 4 Proven methods of ootb unlock turbosim,Stealth sim, hypersim, sonicsim. The thing is with the hypersim it is either programmed for at&t or o2 with stealthsim it can by either aswell as turbosim.

    This does not work

The problem is that this kind of card can only have one ID at a time so it could give the phone the ATT information but it is not capable of turning it off then and giving the real information you can switch to your provider but then the phone looks for the ID which is not the ATT one it needs.

Steath Hyper Turbo sims etc can give the ATT id when they know the iphone will look for it and then put out the GSM ID after the phone has done its check.

Go back and get your money back

Got iphone last week, UK version,1.1.2 otb which i finially working with O2 Ireland. Been trying to do some research regarding EDGE settings etc.. Was really looking forward to email, internet on the move away from wi-fi hotspots (like work etc..). Turned off router tonight and with a bit of fiddling i got it to connect & safari opened google. Was delighted, checked google, yahoo, one half of a youtube clip and so on.. (About 4mins total)

According to my usage statistics, i downloaded approx 3mb. I checked my balance thereafter as i was intrigued regarding the cost. I had started with a nice round figure of 40 Euro. Now i have 6 Euro. I was like...WTF!!!!!

Surely im doing something wrong, cause i couldnt afford this, you guys must all be lotto winners to be using it on the move. Im guessing im doing something seriously wrong, settings wise or something.

Could anyone please help me out, maybe point me in the right direction, or post what they've done to get this working for them, without the need to sell your right nut just to check email.

    Thanks

So for the double post in quick sucession, but if you dont use EDGE, is it gprs instead? If so how do you set it up/settings etc..

Sorry for what must seem like silly questions to all, but i havent got a clue. (As you've no doubt guessed, i clearly know f*ck all :)

Well personally i don't use edge or gprs as it is too expensive on prepay if you are on bill pay you could probably buy a monthly data bundle

For me it is wifi or nothing

Does anybody know any other sources for themes / apps etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 203 ✭✭Rob C

I'm on monthly billing with Vodafone and have thew EUR9.99 data bundle.

25mb per month. But it carries over if you don't use it so i have about 50mb to use now.

I only use it to check e-mails and stocks to be honest. I'd never look at Youtube or do much browsing to be honest, too much of a waste and it's too slow.

I might look at the Irish Times the odd time or check my work Outlook Web Access.

Don't use it for browsing or youtubing. Stocks, Weather and the native e-mail app use very little mb's.

hmmm, i had a similar situation there at the weekend.

was showing off the iphone, checking maps and downloaded a youtube video.

checked my o2 contract online and it says €52 for about 7Mb!!!!!!!

    i am on datalite (€5 for 1Mb)

lesson learned - dont use edge for anything more than updating weather !

i havent checked to see if its been corrected but WTF !

    Found the answer here:

    http://www.modmyiphone.com/forums/showthread.php?p=33107

I have tried this myself and it works. Modified .plist file attached to save you a bit of time. I have added an extra line so it shows mobile numbers and '01' numbers correctly.

Remove the .txt extension from the file before uploading to your iPhone (file should be called "ABPhoneFormats.plist".
All of your phone book entries need to be stored in +353 format for the name to show up on incoming SMS without having to open the sms.

    Hope this helps.
how do you actually upload this to your iphone from the notepad?

I have been pulling my hair out for the last 24 hours with this phone. I am on meteor pre pay and have my EDGE setting set to isp.mymeteor.ie 'my' 'meteor' as the password and username, still no connection.

I would honestly say i have read 50 or more pages of this thread and still cant figure how to get peoples numbers to show on incoming calls and also when i get a text from 11850 or meteor it does be just a blank text. Hopefully somebody could simplify how to change these for me as i am not technologically wise!

    Also bluetooth dont work?
