That was my experience with vodafone too so i moved to o2 and data worked perfectly except it was really expensive! o2 are also the only network with edge iirc. Also, if your iphone is a 1.1.1 model you may have the bug that meant the iphone kept forgetting the data settings you entered. To remedy that you go into installer.app and i think in utilities there is a fix called "edge settings" or something like that.

Thanks. I have installed the edge fix, but nothing. Strange though, I put my vodafone sim into an unlocked N95, added the settings and it still didn't work. My only theory is that vodafone haven 't activated my account for data, but when I phone them they kept harping on about unsupported phones (I told them I had the N95, unlocked).

Lol, I rang them up too and the person the other end was really clueless and crapped on about "unsupported devices" too. I asked about activating the data on my account but she said there was no such thing as data is always enabled and it doesn't make a difference if your sim was in a 3g phone beforehand.

    hey guys
    after reading
the last 10 pages on this thread , i was wondering what is the simplest way of getting maximum usage of the iphone,ie: use of web and calls..some are having issues using it as a phone

i see that some people had issues buying from unlockthatiphone.com.

is it best to buy from an pre unlocked iphone from an ebay powerseller( uk) or (usa) and then taking out a price plan with 02 or vodaphone...

    your thoughts...:)

Hmmm I have no idea then. I thought maybe as this is a new account with them they would have to activate it. I might have to stick the sim in my nokia and take it into a vodafone store.

Try Apple 5th Ave, I got mine there Sunday just gone. look for Serial number with xxx43/44 if you get 45 + then 1.1.2 firmware, if you get 1.1.1 you can unlock and jailbreak in a few mins

He asked for a "sim-free" iphone so he wouldn't get one at the apple store! For the OP, sim free iphones are currently been sold in germany for the absolute bargain of 1000euro:rolleyes:
However, brookie's advice is right in how to get your hands on a locked iphone but one that can be unlcoked fairly easily by you at home which means it basically becomes a sim-free phone(except you void your warranty).

    Great thanks cdebru,

My iPhone is already unlocked on version 1.1.1 so can I just start from page 4 below?

    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/112/iphone_update_112_unlock_mac_4.html

Yeah if u are confident that all the previous steps like the ssh and the bsd are done and all that then run oktoprep and take it from there once you have run oktoprep and upgraded to 1.12 you can use idemocracy to jailbreak it either it is basically a GUI for jailbreaking and fixing the SMS problem

Can someone tell me for the love of god how to activate GPRS internet with Meteor??!

I have called them twice, first girl said I dont need anything activated, second guy said he's send me 3 texts (which never arrived) and then I have to send an MMS message (which iPhone cant do) before it's activated.

This is f*cking ridiculous. Has anyone got Meteors GPRS/wap working!?

I happened to be in the US last month and went to the Apple store. Staff there were only willing to sell iPhones to US residents as you were requested to sign up to AT&T. Has that all changed now?

send a message to data.support@meteor.ie say you wish to set isp up for your account and you need the settings for apple iphone
Generic ISP Meteor settings are as follow:
    isp.mymeteor.ie
    login name: my
    password: meteor

thats what they will give me so send a email to that address asking to set it up.

Hey lads, you know the way if a regular handset doesnt support mms and you get a picture message you usually get a link for the web so you can see it - why dont you get a link when youre using the iphone?

i rang o2 to tell them to set my account to disable mms pictures but they said that wouldnt mean id get a link in the text message. The girl from o2 sounded like she hadnt a clue though so Im tempted to ring them again - anyone know how you can force the picture message to be converted to a link so you can see the picture message online?

Someone sent me a picture message and you wouldnt even realise it as the text shows up but nothing whatsoever to indicate a pic was included in the message. :(

I used to work for Orange in the UK. At Orange, we'd just disable the mms product from your account. If someone sent you an mms, you'd get a link to the Orange website and a PIN number to access it. I'd say O2 would probably be set up very similar.

I am correct in understanding that an iPhone from after week 45 cannot be unlocked at the moment?

Can't 1.1.2 iPhones be easily restored to 1.0.2 or whatever, or is it the new bootloader that is causing the problems?

I'll be in New York next week, does anybody know of shops that would tend to have old stock from a few weeks ago instead of brand new unlockable ones from the Apple store?

That's similar to what happened to my friend who got theirs last weekend. The guy at the counter first asked whether they were british and just gave a general warning about voiding your warranty to get it working abroad but didn't try to stop them buying it at all:D
