Ok lads, sorry to butt in here, but who's correct?

nikimere says it can be fixed / unlocked again, by following the steps in the links he's provided..

Achilles, Damo2k and neilled say nothing can be done (at present)..

    I'm confused

The current firmware can't be unlocked at the minute so technically there's nothing you can do with that firmware. However, it seems since my OP that they've found a way to downgrade the iPhone to an older firmware and then jailbreak that.

drdre if she's selling it after getting the problem sorted, what kinda price we talking? I may be interested... early christmas present for me :P

Firstly, It can be fixed you can downgrade the software to an older version and then use the unlocking techniques for that firmware.

Secondly, slap her across the head if she ever upgrades it again with knowing what to do. "I dont know if I pressed update" = Yes I did press it, but I dont want to admit it.

Yeah that's normally the way if i'm looking after PC issues and the likes... or one of my mates bricking his PSP months ago. People lie when technology is involved... dunno why they just do.

I agree with alan, give her a clip round the ear and tell her off! :P

So, to confirm, 1.1.2 cannot be unlocked at present, but you can downgrade to 1.1.1 which can be unlocked. Is that about the size of it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭nikimere

Phones that come with 1.1.2 out of the box have a different bootloader and basebase. These cannot be unlocked (yet!). That includes all the UK and Euro iPhones and any new phones bought recently in the USA.
Earlier phones can be upgraded to 1.1.2 and there are plenty of guides out there if you Google them or look back on my posts recently.
To be honest 1.1.2 doesn't have anything useful to warrant the hassle updating and unlocking again.

That bloody update thing is after wrecking my phone. Had to do a restore and I'm stuck with an unactivated one now that can't be activated improperly. ****!

Guess it's a paperweight until someone releases a fix.

Was your phone an unlocked 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 ?

I've just successfully updated to 1.1.2 and phone is still unlocked and everything working as before, plus now get alerts from 171 for voicemail

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

Mine was a 1.1.1 unlocked. May have a solution so *crosses fingers*

Its not difficult to go from 1.1.1 unlocked to 1.1.2 unlocked

One very useful fix in 1.1.2 is that I can now receive texts from 171 to indicate I have a voice mail

How did you manage that? Do you have a tutorial, I have an unlocked 1.1.1 version and would like to upgrade to get voicemail alerts.

Hi, sorry if this was asked already (thread way too long at this stage). Basically, have an opportunity to get an iPhone in the States before Christmas. Assuming it will be SIM free, what problems will there be using it in Ireland on an Irish SIM, if any? Thanks in advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

There are no sim free iPhones. The one that I got in the USA was 1.1.1 which is easily unlocked. 1.1.2 Out of the Box, cannot currently be unlocked, and I would guess that is what most of them are on now.

If you're in New York, there's a place near Macys (It's a block down from Madison Square Garden, going towards Times Square) that was selling unlocked iPhones. It's on the left hand side as you're walking towards Times Square.

I successfully unlocked my friend's iphone today, they bought it last weekend in NY and it was 1.1.1 and only week 43, 1.1.2 iphones started from week 45 (to find out which week your iphone take a look at the serial number on the back and you will see two such digits together).
