From what I've read, there should be a checkbox in the syncing options allowing me to manually drag stuff over. That's not there. I've googled and it says it should be but it's not. Any ideas? I'm using a 1.1.1 iPhone, and the latest version of iTunes.

I just use this http://www.tansee.com/iphonetransfer.html its not freeware though, a trial version is available.

That's iPhone to PC, not something I'm too pushed about. Thanks though

You can't manually drag stuff over to the iPhone in iTunes, it's a real pain in the ass that way compared to all other iPods I've used. You can sync only checked content though - you select that option on the iPhone's main sync page first, then go back to your music library and uncheck whatever you don't want to transfer (the checkboxes are in your music library, not the sync pages). You can also Ctrl + Shift a selection, right click and select "Uncheck selection" from the menu that appears. Once you have customized what you want synched and what you don't want, go ahead and sync the phone. If you need to remove albums, just uncheck them in iTunes and sync again.

A true manual sync option for music would be nice but it doesn't exist yet as far as I know...

A workaround is to setup an iPhone playlist, and set your iPhone options to only sync the contents of that playlist.

For those who’ve unlocked and have a non-functioning Voicemail button, here’s how to fix it:
    1. First, take note of what your voicemail number is with your current provider (for example, in Ireland the Meteor voicemail number is 171).
    2. Click the phone button in your iPhone.
    3. Click the keypad tab.
    4. Type the following code:
    *5005*86*xxx#
Where xxx is your voicemail number, using the Spain Vodafone example, you would be typing *5005*86*171#
    5. Hit call.
    6. Give it a bit, and the code will be set.
    7. Hit the voicemail button, and it will now call your voicemail.

    ENJOY!!!

Dan, many thanks for this worked a threat,

    Hi all,

I have been following this thread for a while now as was going to the USA. Anyway I bought an iphone version 1.0.2

I have been trying to work out how to unlock and use the phone from previous posts but there are so many comments that I am finding it hard to work out the best option for me (I am not tech at all).

Can someone advise me of the easiest way to unlock please?

Also does anybody know if there is anywhere in Dublin where you can just go in and pay to have this process done?

Your best bet is to wait a week or two until the UK iPhone is unlocked and then drive up North (if you have the means to do so) and get one in the Carphone Warehouse up there and unlock it yourself. That will cost £269 which is €383.31, that is the cheapest solution.

Hi Nikimere [or anyone else who may have an inside track] - Is this really the cheapest and easiest way for us to get an iPhone in the next week or two ???

I drove up to Newry yesterday and bought one.
I have activated it so i can use the WiFi, iPod and YouTube features but i can't yet use it as a phone. Still waiting for it to be unlocked.
Give it a week or so...

thew easiest way is to follow this tutorial its step by step with pictures & you don't even need a computer, just a wifi connection.

    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/111/iphone_step_1.html

but you will have to upgrade your phone FROM version 1.0.2 to 1.1 first.

Thanks Auvers but I need the procedure for firmware 1.0.2 as the link you gave will only work for 1.1.1

If I need to firstly upgrade to 1.1.1 can you please let me know how to do this?

    Thanks again

    Here you go,

First you need to enter recovery mode, to enter recovery mode, connect the phone to the computer and press and hold the Power button (on top) and the Home button (on bottom front) simultaneously.

After about 15 seconds phone will appear to turn off, release the Power button but keep holding the Home button. After about 15 seconds the computer and iTunes will detect the phone in recovery mode, and you can perform a restore.

IMPORTANT: DONT just click the restore button, it will restore it with the latest firmware.

It's much safer to manually select firmware instead. If you want to manually select a different firmware you can hold down SHIFT key (Windows) or Option/ALT-key (Mac) when clicking the Restore button, and it will let you choose firmware file.

1.1.1 Firmware *EDIT* Link fixed thanks Twonk

    I see you paid STG£269 (~€370).

Is that for the 4Gb or the 8Gb?

    :)

Does anybody know...if i buy a iPhone, unlock it and then use on O2 (to avoid the expensive contract) do i still get to use visual voicemail? As this seems to be the only feature really lacking by having the thing on another network. As for wifi access...the cloud are offereing the same package to touch users for £3.50 a month i think. Still between that and cheap contract/PAYG sim would be much better off than going O2 contract route

At the moment (hopefully it will change) you cannot unlock an O2 iPhone as the bootloader has been changed, you can jailbreak it allowing you to use it as an iPod and install 3rd party applications, but you can't make a phone call yet

Is that because it would be 1.1.2 ?

Guys I about to upgrade the firmware on my unlocked iphone from 1.02 to 1.1.1, I obviously have saved content on the phone, such as contacts, music, videos, text messages etc

do i have to virginise my phone in order to upgrade it or can I just upgrade it ?

if I virginise it, will I lose all the content ?

    any help ?

    Hi lads,

I'm trying to transfer files to a directory on my iPhone.

I used to use iBrickr to do this but since I've upgraded to 1.1.1 I can't use iBrickr instead.

How do I go about transfering files now?

No 3G, supports GRPS and EDGE

It would help if yuo stated which network your SIM is with, also there is a sticky on this forum with the settings for all the networks

You may also have to ring your operator to enable Internet access

No, its because they have a different bootloader

I believe you have to virginise, however have seen posts on other forums saying it was not neccessary

I had a 1.0.2, virginised, upgraded to 1.1.1 using iTunes and then jailbreaked and unlocked it

iTunes recognised new firmware and then offered to restore settings and my contacts, emails, music etc all came back

I have been reports that recently purchased iPhones in the States are coming with 1.1.2, not sure if they have same bootloader as O2 phones though, if they do, they can't be unlocked (yet!)

adverts.ie, Buy and Sell, eBay etc

If you have someone purchase one in the USA today you might be lucky and get one with 1.1.1 and therefore can be unlocked etc very easily

No doubt the 1.1.2's will be unlockable too (hopefully!)

You can only get the iPhone in 8GB, they stopped making the 4GB one a long time ago.
