I am probably making a biiiiig mistake by making this comment but I think all the Yore Ma posts are about as unfunny as Tommy Tiernan. Thankfully, the practice seems to have been stamped out

I think After Hours is great. Some of the threads here have been absolute gems and have really made me laugh. The moderation is really good and most things are dealt with fairly quickly.

    +1

    And Terry makes me warm.

    No problems for me.

Unanimous in terms of comments so far. Feedback malcontents take note. The folk voting for some change might take the time to voice an opinion though...

Terry, Karoma, nesf et al do a fine job. The beauty of it is, they are all different people with very different opinions, and yet mod very consistently and even handedly.

Keep it up, chaps (as Ruu might say).

If the Foreigner/Roma/Taxi Driver threads could be packaged up in nice flowery wrapping paper with a big pink satin bow & shipped over to Stormfront - never to be seen again - then AH would be even better.

while this isnt a rampant white supremecist site, nor is it left wing hippy commune.
i like to think we take a pretty even keel on things, and if people want to discuss racism or animal cruelty issues, then we dont come down on people.

theres a difference between being racist, and discussing racism. i actually have little problem with any topic being discussed, as long as its within the grounds of a very lenient decency, if you know what i mean.
there are a lot of emotive feelings being bandied about from time to time, but drop kicking a topic because a lot fo people dont like it is not something ive ever been fond of. drop kicking a topic because its just out side the bounds of decorum is however.
and for any who want to have the discussion on what those bounds are, feel free to head over to the feedback forum.
right now, those bounds are the bounds of the moderators, anda rent likely to change any time soon :)

Edit: While I think of it - fair dues to the Mods of AH for the sterling work that they do around here keeping the place as "tidy" as possible. Not an easy task when this place is the "Teenager's Bedrooom" of boards.

we were asked not to be so quick with the 'move' button last year, so we have slowed down. if people genuinely feel that a thread should be some where else, please report it.

otherwise, we will move whatever we feel needs to be moved. i always move the work related ones to the work forum. i dont know about the other guys.

I'd really like to see a clamp down on catch-phrasery and low or no content posts. I know this isn't SomethingAwful but I would like to see a move in the direction of discouraging such posts..

absolutely appreciate that, and agree with it.

    but...

if i banned everyone who wriote something that annoyed me, or i felt was low brow, AH would be a very quite place.

and id have to ban myself too :)

some catch phrase are very much a part of boards history. over use is annoying, and tbh, i find that the residents here tend to moderate anyone who is annoying anyway. and of course, feel free to report anyone who you feel is constantly submitting under-contented posts. the mods will make a decision.

I know the mods have limited time and are already fighting an uphill battle in this forum. Nonetheless that would be my suggestion for how to improve AH.

granted. we'll see what we can do to stop constant one word responses and stupidness, but again, were not here to moderate everyone, but to ensure the forum continues in a manner which suits everyone. and everyone is allowed a 'lol' or a 'yore ma' reponse every now and then. you want serious debating, the humanities forums frown very deeply on those types of things :)

if you see what i mean?

AH is grand the way it is now. It would be nice to have image tags but then again the place would soon be overwhelmed by muppets posting cat pictures.

that isnt going to happen any time soon as far as im aware.

    and for good reason too.

when i get drunk i take pictures of my penis, and that is just not a good look on the interweb at 4 in the morning :)

That wasn't my point. I couldn't give a toss if they were shipped to Timbuktu or The Moyross Barbie Fan Club. Just anywhere but here. Those threads have passed their sell by date & generally churn out the same ol' shíte again & again.

this is what happens when you get a high churn rate of people.

the same threads happen over and over and over again.

ive been on this site for 10 years. believe me. ive seen them all :)

however, once you start seeing the trend, people get disillusioned. they feel the place has changed, its not as much fin anymore and then they complain. hell, it happened to me.
the problem is not so much the forums, but that people change.

we cant help that. sorry :)

but once people get over the fact that other people come along, you tend to start looking at smaller amounts of forums, and ignoring other stuff etc etc etc. they tend to start enjoying themselves. AH being sucha large forum suffers greatly from this. hence the large amount of complaints we get. and its not actually our fault :(
we are to blame for the worlds ills is appears :)

Its AH. And so mote it be.

By the way wwhead..Shinji was on sky news this evening..... he looked well :D The big gaymer that he is.

really? havent spoken to him for a few months. what was he doing?

    and who are you?

I agree with the auld general consensus and that is that it's great. It's improved massively of late and you guys are doing a great job with it. The moderation is spot on and Terry is possibly the best thing to have happened to it.

Maybe the new infraction system would be of help here? You wouldn't have to ban anyone for a first offence but could discourage them this way?
feel free to report anyone who you feel is constantly submitting under-contented posts. the mods will make a decision.

I don't know if it's a case of repeat offenders so much as it is the proliferation of tired catchphrases, that is everyone's doing it once so the board gets almost spammed with it at times. (Which kinda goes against what I'm saying above. Hmmm, tricky business this!).

I guess I'd like to see the community get over it's past; "Yore Ma" and "Atari Jaguar" are an important part of boards history, sure. In fact, that's exactly what they should be now that they've run their course, history; but that's not something mods can control.
you want serious debating, the humanities forums frown very deeply on those types of things :)

if you see what i mean?

I do, absolutely. The problem with Humanities is it can be a bit too humourless!

One of the reasons I'm posting in this thread is because I love the fact you can just take the piss and be completely irreverend on AH. There are some really great posters and posts on this board but they often get buried beneath an avalanche of thoughtless "me too" replies. I guess if we could discourage such posts the general level of wit and sophistication (sic.) might automatically be upped here.

The stock market is a bit turbulent at the moment and stocks in Terry inc are being severely affected by the slowdown in the economy. Those shares aren't going to increase in value any time soon. If anything I'd say set up a Terry depreciation club.

There's been some interesting topics over the weeks, So Glad's threads have been the best in a long time imo.
Also agree that terry is doing a lot of good modding - I have no idea how he has the time though :p

    Nonsense

The Terry Inc™ Corporation said yesterday that it expected 2008 moderation to exceed analysts' forecasts as a result of strong growth in boards.ie
particularly in its After Hours forum despite the recent sub prime lending problems in the U.S. markets.

The company forecasts earnings of $10.25 to $10.55 a share on revenue of $2.2 billion to $2.3 billion for 2008. Analysts, on average, forecast a profit of $9.45 a share on revenue of $2.15 billion.

    Terry™ is a good pick.

(The value of shares can go up as well as down, Past Performance is not necessarily an Indicator of future results.)

I think AH is great, but it should be more free flowing. Mods seem to eager to lock/delete/move any thread they think is anyway out of place.

If a mod thinks a worthless thread has been posted then it will not get many replies and will die off, so let that happen instead of presuming nobody will be interested in it.

Also bring back tags. I think AH should be a no rule forum(except for NWS, abuse and copyright material) it would make the place ten times better than what it is.

I don't find it clicky, people say what they want, if others disagree, they say so.

If someone says something deemed offensive by someone, they call them on it.

is there another way of decided what should be locked other than subjective personal opinion?
    :)

If a mod thinks a worthless thread has been posted then it will not get many replies and will die off, so let that happen instead of presuming nobody will be interested in it.

it happens. mods dont lock threads they think are worthless as far as im concerned. they lock threads that we consider not beyond the realms of AH's very liberal rule of decency or decorum.
its very rare that a threads is locked just because a mod thinks no one is interested in it. id be surprised if its happened much at all tbh.
there is usually a much different reason.

    Also bring back tags.

its not something that we are thinking of returning any time soon.
    sorry.

besides, if you want to post pictures, go the feedback forum. and then read all the bitching that goes on there about the use of cat pictures.

AH would become a hive of stupid pictures, and that would annoy people. much like the constant use of 'yore ma (the phrase, not actually yore ma) or atari jaguar.

I think AH should be a no rule forum(except for NWS, abuse and copyright material) it would make the place ten times better than what it is.

will never happen. as mentioned, go to the thunderdome.

as mentioned elsewhere on this site, freedom does not equate to anarchy.

people have the freedom to post pretty much what they want already. it doesnt mean i have to allow people roam the hallways shouting obsenities and mugging other users for their lunch money.

    so to speak...

and if it would be 10 times better, then why isnt the thunderdome all that popular?
when it started it was all very witty, but really, have you read the garbage in there? by all means, start a few threads and ask for me to move them there. i will happily oblige :)

you use the word clique instead, and nubile maidens will fall at your feet, mana will fall from heavan, and you will instantly be welcomed with a firm handshake and an alcoholic beverage of youre own delight whenever you leave the house*

When it comes to AH, i think mods should be a little more relaxed, for example if people are arguing in a thread, just let it be they'll soon tire them selfs out

I'm banned from feedback, pmed every mod a couple times now but never got any replies, any chance you could sort that out? :)

All i know is that another big forum i use, the AH part is pretty much a post anything you want forum(except blatant nws) and its great
If you wanna see what i mean about the other site, check it out its in the top 6 at big-boards.com

Anyway i know what you're saying, either way boards and AH is still on my daily visit list ;)

Cat picstures and all are funny, some good threads like always but i would like to see less imaturity on AH maybe send the immature things to TD where they can be as immature and as offensive as they like, this would mean better discussions in AH and less work for mods, not to mention satasfaction from boards users who want to be able to say what they want in AH threads
